Crypto mining is the proof-of-work process used by networks such as Bitcoin to confirm transactions and make past transaction records costly to change. Bitcoin miners use specialized ASIC machines to compete for the right to add a block; whether mining at home makes sense depends on local electricity costs, equipment, cooling, and other expenses—not simply on the coin’s price.
What crypto mining means
“Crypto mining” is not a single process shared by every cryptocurrency. Bitcoin is a proof-of-work network: miners expend computing effort to propose blocks of transactions. Other networks use different systems. In proof of stake, validators use staked tokens as collateral rather than competing through extensive computational work. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says proof-of-stake networks use significantly less computing power and electricity than proof-of-work networks. EIA’s explanation of cryptocurrency mining and electricity describes this distinction; it should not be read as a claim that every network has the same energy sources or environmental impacts.
Bitcoin mining is not the same as running a general-purpose computer to “solve” useful problems. Its computation serves the network’s proof-of-work rules: it helps establish transaction order and makes rewriting the chain increasingly difficult.
How Bitcoin mining works
- Transactions are selected. Miners gather eligible, pending transactions and assemble them into a candidate block.
- Mining hardware searches for a valid hash. The miner repeatedly hashes the block header, changing a nonce and, as needed, related header data. The goal is to find a hash below the network’s current target. The Bitcoin developer guide describes the process: “The mining hardware iterates through every possible value for the block header nonce and generates the corresponding hash.” Bitcoin developer documentation: Mining.
- A miner proposes a block. Finding a qualifying hash is a competitive probability event. The result has no useful answer outside the network’s rules; the successful miner broadcasts the proposed block.
- Other participants verify it. Network participants check the proposed block and its transactions against Bitcoin’s rules. Producing proof of work is costly, while checking a proposed result is comparatively straightforward.
- The chain records the order. Accepted blocks extend the ledger. Because each block depends on the preceding chain, changing an older record would require redoing work and catching up with the continuing network.
Bitcoin.org’s beginner explanation of how Bitcoin works describes mining as a way to confirm transactions and make changes to old blocks increasingly difficult. The Ethereum.org proof-of-work explainer also describes the hash-and-verification pattern, but it is an educational explanation of proof of work—not evidence that Ethereum currently uses mining. Ethereum moved to proof of stake; the EIA source describes it as a proof-of-stake network.

What equipment Bitcoin mining requires
Bitcoin mining is generally done with specialized application-specific integrated circuit hardware, or ASICs, designed for the network’s hashing algorithm. A standard desktop PC is not a realistic substitute, and a GPU recommendation without a specific network and current evidence would be misleading. The EIA describes specialized equipment capable of trillions of calculations per second. Its mining overview also discusses electricity use and cooling.
Hash rate is the number of hash attempts a miner performs per second. A higher hash rate means more attempts, but it does not by itself tell you whether a machine is economical. Efficiency is commonly expressed in joules per terahash (J/TH): it indicates the electricity required for a given amount of hashing work, and a higher J/TH value means lower efficiency. See the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index for its efficiency terminology and methodology.

Can you mine Bitcoin at home?
Home mining is possible if you can obtain and operate suitable ASIC equipment, but “possible” does not mean quiet, simple, or profitable. A miner draws substantial power and releases heat; ventilation and cooling matter, and the load must suit the electrical circuit and local installation requirements. Noise, utility terms, local electrical codes, and any applicable laws or taxes also depend on your circumstances.

- Check local rules and utility conditions before operating mining equipment.
The EIA identifies electricity as the primary operating cost of a cryptocurrency mining facility and notes that cooling is also needed to prevent equipment from overheating. Large mining loads can affect grid demand, which is one reason energy use is relevant beyond an individual miner’s bill. The EIA article discusses these operating and grid considerations.
Solo mining or joining a pool
Solo and pooled mining differ mainly in payout variance and how rewards are distributed. Neither removes the underlying uncertainty of finding blocks.

| Approach | How work and rewards are handled | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Solo mining | You mine independently; if you find a block, its proceeds go to you under the network’s rules. | High payout variance and potentially long waits between rewards. |
| Pooled mining | Participants submit shares—evidence of contributed work—and the pool distributes a portion of block rewards and transaction fees according to its payout method. | Payments may be more frequent and smaller, subject to the pool’s fees, payout minimums, and rules. |
Pool terms are not interchangeable. Before joining, examine the fee schedule, payout method and minimum, how shares are counted, and the pool’s operating and security rules. The Bitcoin developer guide’s mining documentation explains solo mining and the role of shares in pooled mining.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs Bitcoin mining profitable?
There is no universal answer. Profit depends on the miner’s actual electricity price, hardware cost and efficiency, network difficulty, block subsidy and transaction fees, cooling, maintenance, pool charges, and other operating or financing costs. Revenue assumptions also change with coin prices and network conditions. A high hash rate alone does not establish that a machine will earn more than it costs to operate.

Treat a calculator’s output as a scenario, not a prediction. Small changes in electricity rates, network difficulty, or revenue assumptions can alter the result. The available sources do not establish your tariff, equipment price, local installation costs, or future network conditions, so they cannot support a reliable payback period for an unspecified miner. The EIA’s discussion of mining operating costs and Cambridge’s index methodology provide context, not a personalized profitability forecast.
What Bitcoin mining’s energy figures can—and cannot—tell you
Proof of work requires substantial computational effort and electricity. Cambridge’s Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index provides modeled estimates, not direct readings from every miner’s meter. Its methodology notes that a seven-day moving average reduces short-term hashrate volatility; monthly totals assume continuous power use over 24 hours at the daily best-guess power-demand estimate. Any figure drawn from the index should therefore be identified with its date and model period, not presented as a direct measurement or timeless annual total. The index and its methodology are available from the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance.
