Cryptocurrency mining is the proof-of-work process Bitcoin uses to propose new blocks of transactions. Miners compete using specialized computers; the successful miner can collect newly issued bitcoin and transaction fees. Mining can pay under favorable conditions, but rewards are not the same as profit: electricity, hardware, cooling, fees, and other costs can outweigh them. The details below use Bitcoin as the example, not as a description of every cryptocurrency.

What cryptocurrency mining means

On Bitcoin, mining is part of the process for adding a new block of transactions to the blockchain. Miners assemble candidate blocks and repeatedly calculate hashes while changing candidate data. A miner whose hash meets the network’s target earns the opportunity to propose its block. Other participants can then verify it.

Adding blocks makes earlier transaction history increasingly difficult to change. Bitcoin.org compares the process to a competitive lottery: mining makes it difficult for one participant to keep adding blocks one after another. The technical details are in the Bitcoin Developer Guide.

Mining is not simply checking transactions on a personal computer, nor does every cryptocurrency use mining. This guide focuses on Bitcoin’s proof-of-work system; proof-of-stake networks use a different mechanism.

How miners earn rewards

A successful Bitcoin block can provide a block reward and the fees attached to transactions included in it. The miner may work alone or contribute computing power through a pool. The reward is gross income, not take-home profit: operating and equipment expenses still have to be paid.

Solo mining or joining a pool?

Approach How proceeds work Payout pattern Trade-off
Solo mining If successful, the miner receives the full block reward and included fees. Long and unpredictable waits are possible. Higher payout variance; a miner may wait a long time without a block.
Pooled mining Participants share proceeds roughly in proportion to contributed hashing work, under the pool’s rules. Typically smaller, more frequent payouts. Pool fees and operating terms apply, and payouts depend on the pool’s operation.

Pooling changes how rewards are distributed; it does not eliminate electricity, hardware, or other costs, and it does not guarantee a net profit. The Bitcoin Developer Guide describes the distinction between solo and pooled mining.

What equipment Bitcoin mining requires

Bitcoin mining is generally associated with specialized SHA-256 application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), rather than ordinary desktop computers. The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance’s 2025 report describes a specialized, concentrated hardware market. A miner’s relevant specification is not just its processing rate: energy efficiency, commonly expressed as joules per terahash (J/TH), affects how much electricity it uses for a given amount of hashing work.

Buying an ASIC does not establish that mining at home will pay. A realistic assessment also needs to account for the machine’s acquisition and financing cost, electrical capacity, heat removal, noise, maintenance, uptime, and any local or facility constraints. The Cambridge report estimated that hardware efficiency improved 24% year over year, reaching 28.2 J/TH by June 2024; that is a report estimate for the period stated, not a specification for every machine currently available.

Does Bitcoin mining pay?

Sometimes, when rewards and operating conditions are favorable, but there is no universal answer for an individual miner. Gross rewards can rise or fall in value, while network competition and difficulty affect how much hashing work is needed to earn them. Costs and operational performance determine whether the resulting revenue exceeds expenses.

A useful estimate needs explicit assumptions for all of the following:

Cambridge’s 2025 report found that electricity made up over 80% of surveyed miners’ cash-based operating expenses. It reported median survey costs of $45/MWh for electricity alone and $55.5/MWh all-in. Those figures describe survey respondents, not a household electricity quote or a guaranteed current benchmark. A calculator result should likewise be treated as an estimate only when it names its date and assumptions, including hardware, power rate, pool fees, uptime, cooling and other overhead, network conditions, and acquisition cost. The available figures do not establish a current model-by-model profit estimate.

What the energy estimates do—and do not—say

Bitcoin mining uses substantial electricity, but estimates must be read with their scope and methodology. The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance’s 2025 report estimated annual Bitcoin electricity consumption at 138 TWh, about 0.54% of global electricity use. This was an estimate based on data representing nearly half of global mining activity at collection time, not a real-time meter reading.

The same report estimated annual emissions at 39.8 MtCO₂e using its survey-based estimate, compared with 69.6 MtCO₂e using an IP-based model. These are method-dependent estimates, not direct measurements; the difference illustrates why an emissions figure should be read alongside the method used to produce it.

For its miner survey, the 2025 report announcement put sustainable energy use at 52.4%, comprising 42.6% renewables and 9.8% nuclear (Cambridge announcement). This survey finding does not mean that every miner uses that mix, or that the figure describes all electricity consumed by mining.

Alexander Neumueller, Research Lead for Digital Assets Energy and Climate Impact at Cambridge’s Centre for Alternative Finance, said: “This report directly addresses a persistent data gap by relying on direct practitioner insights rather than abstractions.” The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s discussion gives additional energy-planning context and cautions that the Cambridge-based figures it cites concern Bitcoin, not other proof-of-work cryptocurrencies (EIA discussion).

How to decide whether mining is worth evaluating

  1. Start with a specific machine. Record its purchase price, expected efficiency, power draw, maintenance needs, and any financing costs. Do not base a decision on a generic “mining profit” figure.
  2. Use your actual electricity terms. Apply the rate and contract that would cover the miner, and account for cooling and facility overhead. A rate quoted for a different location or arrangement may not apply.
  3. Model revenue assumptions transparently. Set a date and document bitcoin price, reward and fee assumptions, network difficulty or hashrate, and uptime. If using a pool, include its fees and payout rules.
  4. Compare net results and sensitivity. Subtract electricity, equipment, cooling, maintenance, fees, and other expenses. Then test how the result changes if price, difficulty, fees, or uptime moves against your assumptions.
  5. Check practical constraints. Confirm that electrical supply, heat and noise management, space, and local requirements make the operation feasible before treating a theoretical return as actionable.
