Crypto crashes are rapid repricings that can turn into cascades. New information, crowded trades, leverage, forced selling, disappearing liquidity and exchange failures can all reinforce one another. A leveraged trader may have to add collateral or be liquidated, while an outage can prevent users from closing positions or moving funds. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns that virtual currencies are more volatile than traditional fiat currencies and that cash-market platforms may not provide the safeguards investors expect. There is no risk-free trading or custody strategy.
What a crypto market crash is
A crash is not defined by one universal percentage or duration. It is a fast, disorderly repricing in which available bids thin out and many participants try to sell at the same time. The trigger might be new economic or regulatory information, a security incident, a major holder selling, or a change in expectations. The speed becomes more dangerous when traders are positioned in the same direction with borrowed money.
In a spot purchase made entirely with your own cash, the market value of the asset can fall sharply, but the position itself does not create a margin call. Derivatives, margin accounts and other borrowed-position products are different: the platform can require more collateral or close the position when losses consume the required margin.
Price feeds also matter. A venue may calculate a mark price from an index or an internal methodology rather than from its latest trade. During stressed markets, a mark that diverges from prices elsewhere can trigger liquidations even while another venue shows a different quote. The CFTC advises researching both the platform and the wallet arrangement before sending money or sensitive information.

Why a fall can accelerate into a cascade
Leverage turns a price move into a collateral problem
Leverage lets a trader control a position larger than the cash posted as collateral. It magnifies gains and losses: a 10% adverse move against a 5-times leveraged position represents roughly 50% of the posted collateral before fees, funding and liquidation mechanics. The platform does not wait for the collateral to reach exactly zero; maintenance-margin rules normally trigger a partial or full close earlier.
Forced selling removes buyers
When positions are liquidated, the venue sells or buys contracts automatically to reduce exposure. If many accounts reach their thresholds together, those orders consume the available bids and push the price lower. The lower price then brings additional accounts to their thresholds. SIFMA described this feedback loop as forced liquidations snowballing while liquidity thinned.
Liquidity can disappear before a quoted price does
An order book can still display a last-traded price while containing very little size near that price. A market order then fills across increasingly worse levels, creating slippage. During the October 10, 2025 episode, SIFMA reported that liquidity withdrew and that some platforms experienced technical failures at the same time.
Price marks and fragmented venues add uncertainty
Crypto trades continuously across many venues. During a shock, prices can diverge because each venue has different participants, index components and risk controls. SIFMA reported that some platforms used in-house price marks that diverged from other markets and said this contributed to unnecessary liquidations. A trader therefore needs to know which price determines liquidation, not just which price appears on a public chart.

What the October 10, 2025 crash shows
SIFMA’s account of October 10, 2025 provides a concrete example, not a typical crash average. Bitcoin fell more than 14% intraday, and approximately $19 billion in leveraged positions were liquidated almost instantly. The report also described widespread technical failures that left traders unable to execute orders or protect open positions.
Those figures are event-specific. They do not establish a normal crypto-crash percentage, a usual liquidation total or a predictable recovery time. They do show why a trader must treat market risk, platform access and execution quality as separate risks that can arrive together.
How liquidation works in practice
Initial margin and maintenance margin
When you open a leveraged position, the venue locks initial margin. Maintenance margin is the minimum equity the venue requires to keep the position open. As the position loses value, your equity declines. If it falls below the maintenance requirement, the venue can liquidate without waiting for your approval.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMark price, fees and funding
Liquidation is usually based on a venue-defined mark price rather than the last trade. Trading fees, funding payments, interest and the expected cost of closing can reduce equity and move the effective threshold closer. Read the current contract specification for the exact formula and whether fees are charged during liquidation.

Partial versus full liquidation
Some venues reduce only enough size to restore the maintenance requirement; others may close the entire position. Insurance funds can absorb certain losses, while auto-deleveraging can reduce profitable traders’ positions when the venue cannot cover a deficit. These mechanisms, their priority and their trigger conditions differ by venue and can change, so treat the platform’s current documentation as controlling.
Can leverage make you lose more than you deposited?
Yes, it can, depending on the product, account type and venue. The CFTC says leverage can produce losses greater than the initial investment because an adverse move may require additional margin or leave a deficit after the position is closed. A cross-margined account can expose more of the account balance than the amount originally assigned to one position. Rapid gaps, slippage, fees or a failure to meet a margin call can increase the shortfall.
Some products or jurisdictions may provide a contractual limit such as a negative-balance protection policy, but that protection is not universal. Do not infer it from an app’s interface or from another exchange’s rules. Before trading, find the venue’s language on deficit recovery, collateral calls, liquidation fees, insurance and whether a loss can be pursued beyond the posted margin.

A fully paid spot holding has no liquidation threshold because there is no borrowed position. Its market price can still fall to a small fraction of the purchase price or to zero, and an exchange outage can prevent selling or withdrawing while the market is moving.

Venue rules that determine your actual liquidation risk
Two platforms can liquidate identical positions at different prices. Check these items in the named venue’s current contract and risk documentation before transferring collateral:
| Rule or input | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Initial and maintenance margin | Sets how much collateral is required to open and keep a position. |
| Mark-price methodology | Determines the reference price used for unrealized profit, loss and liquidation. |
| Position tiers | Larger positions may have higher margin requirements or lower maximum leverage. |
| Liquidation style | Partial or full closure changes how much exposure remains after a trigger. |
| Fees, funding and interest | Charges reduce account equity and can move the effective liquidation point. |
| Insurance fund and auto-deleveraging | Explains how deficits are handled and whether other traders’ positions can be reduced. |
| Collateral and withdrawal rules | Determine whether funds can be moved, converted or used to answer a margin call during stress. |
What to do if an exchange goes down during a crash
An outage is an execution and access risk, not evidence that prices will reverse. Use this sequence while preserving a record of what happened:
- Check official notices. Use the venue’s status page, incident dashboard and verified announcement channels. A social-media post or message from an unknown “support” account is not proof of an outage or a recovery offer.
- Record the event. Note the UTC time, error messages, affected functions, account mode, open-order IDs, position IDs and screenshots of balances or margin levels. Preserve confirmation emails and API logs if available.
- Do not send emergency credentials. CFTC guidance warns about hacking, phishing and exchange scams. Legitimate support should not request a password, private key, seed phrase or a transfer to “unlock” an account.
- Use only documented alternate access. If the venue publishes a read-only status API or an official mobile or web fallback, verify the domain and certificate before signing in. Do not install unverified software offered in chat.
- Wait for service restoration, then reconcile. Compare balances, fills, cancellations, fees, funding, transfers and liquidation events with your own records. Download the venue’s statement before placing a new order.
- Escalate with evidence. Submit one ticket containing timestamps and identifiers, and keep copies. Compensation, withdrawal rights, uptime promises and treatment of orders during downtime are venue-specific; do not assume an automatic reversal.
Exchange custody or a hardware wallet?
The choice is operational rather than a guarantee of profit. An exchange is convenient for active trading but depends on the platform’s uptime, account controls and withdrawal systems. A hardware-wallet arrangement keeps signing keys away from the exchange, but you become responsible for the device, recovery phrase and transaction approvals.

| Main failure mode | Outage, withdrawal freeze, cyber incident or platform failure. | Lost or exposed recovery phrase, phishing, device failure or user error. |
| Trading | Immediate venue trading when markets and account access are working. | Usually requires transferring assets to a venue, adding time and network fees. |
| Responsibility | The platform operates custody and withdrawal processes. | You control the keys and recovery process; there is no password-reset department for a lost phrase. |
| Price risk | Assets can lose value during an outage or while held on the platform. | Assets can lose the same market value; self-custody does not prevent a price decline. |
For either model, verify addresses on the device, use multi-factor authentication where available, separate long-term holdings from trading collateral, and never disclose a recovery phrase. A physical recovery accessory can protect a backup from some environmental damage, but it cannot recover a phrase that was never recorded correctly and does not remove phishing risk.

How to prepare before a volatile move
Size for the loss you can actually absorb
Keep position size small enough that a large adverse move does not force a rushed decision. Maintain a cash buffer separate from trading collateral so an unexpected margin call does not consume money needed for living expenses. The CFTC advises speculating only with money you can afford to lose.
Choose controls you can execute during stress
Understand whether stop orders are guaranteed, what happens when the market gaps through a trigger, and whether the venue cancels linked orders after liquidation. A stop is an instruction, not insurance: if liquidity is poor, the fill can be materially worse than the trigger.
Plan for lost access
Save official support and status-page addresses in advance, keep account identifiers offline, and maintain independent records of deposits, withdrawals, positions and tax lots. Test authentication and recovery methods before a crisis. Do not rely on a single device, email account or network connection.

Review custody boundaries
Keep only the amount needed for near-term trading on a venue. Move long-term holdings to a custody arrangement whose recovery process you understand, and test a small transfer before moving a larger balance. Self-custody adds responsibility; exchange custody adds dependence on a third party.
What current U.S. regulatory guidance changes—and what it does not
The SEC’s March 17, 2026 release says the SEC and CFTC issued an interpretation clarifying how federal securities laws apply to certain crypto assets and transactions. Classification can affect which rules apply to a product or activity, but it does not make an asset less volatile, guarantee withdrawals, prevent liquidation or insure a trading account.
Rules also vary by jurisdiction, product and account type. Read the disclosures that apply to your residence and the specific contract you intend to trade rather than relying on a general statement about “crypto regulation.”
