Crypto can be too volatile for money you may need soon, but volatility is only one part of the decision. You also have to evaluate liquidity, fraud and hacking exposure, platform failure, custody of private keys, transaction and account fees, and the protections attached to the route you choose. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes crypto asset securities as exceptionally risky and often volatile, and says the risk of loss remains significant. That warning is about crypto asset securities and their intermediaries; individual crypto assets and services can have different designs and risks.

This guide explains how to compare direct ownership, self-custody, third-party custody, and bitcoin or ether exchange-traded products (ETPs) without assuming that a wallet works like a bank account or that an exchange account has deposit-insurance protection.

Is crypto too volatile to invest in?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Crypto may be unsuitable if a large price decline would prevent you from paying bills, meeting a short-term goal, or maintaining an emergency reserve. It is speculative exposure, not a substitute for cash needed on a known schedule. The SEC’s Sept. 9, 2024 bulletin says bitcoin and ether are highly speculative and tells investors to consider their price volatility even when exposure comes through an exchange-traded product: SEC bulletin on exchange-traded products providing exposure to bitcoin and ether.

The SEC’s March 23, 2023 investor alert says crypto asset securities can be exceptionally risky and volatile and cautions investors to risk only money they can afford to lose entirely. Its exact warning is: “The risk of loss for individual investors who participate in transactions involving crypto assets, including crypto asset securities, remains significant.” That statement is directed at crypto asset securities and intermediaries, so it should not be read as a claim that every token, service, or legal structure has identical characteristics.

What volatility means in practice

  • A quoted price can move sharply before you can complete a sale.
  • A market can become illiquid, leaving few buyers or making execution costly.
  • A trading venue or market can disappear, or withdrawals can be restricted.
  • Different assets can have different designs, supply rules, uses, and failure modes; the experience of bitcoin is not a risk profile for every other asset.

No reliable volatility percentage or loss-rate statistic is established here, so a precise percentage would create false confidence. Treat any forecast, target price, or “guaranteed” return as a claim requiring independent verification rather than as a planning assumption.

How can crypto investors lose money besides a falling price?

Price risk is only one layer. The SEC’s risk alert identifies several additional ways a position can lose value or become inaccessible.

Illiquidity and disappearing markets

If trading activity dries up, you may not be able to sell at the displayed price—or at all. A token can remain visible in an account while the market needed to convert it to cash has become too thin or has ceased operating.

Platform insolvency or bankruptcy

An exchange, broker, or custodian can fail. A bankruptcy process may delay withdrawals, and the treatment of customer assets depends on the firm’s legal arrangements, records, contracts, and applicable law. Do not assume that an account balance means you have an immediately available, segregated asset.

Withdrawal restrictions and operational failures

Technical glitches, maintenance, cyber incidents, or compliance actions can interrupt deposits and withdrawals. A restriction can matter even when the market price has not changed.

Fraud, phishing, hacking, and malware

Attackers may impersonate support staff, compromise an account, steal credentials, or trick you into authorizing a transfer. A blockchain transfer that you approve to the wrong address is often difficult or impossible to reverse. Malware can also replace a copied wallet address before you confirm a transaction.

Regulatory or product changes

Rules, listings, access requirements, or the operation of a service can change. A restriction in one jurisdiction may not apply in another, so confirm the rules for your country and the exact product rather than relying on a generic statement about “crypto.”

Which crypto fees should you compare?

A low advertised trading commission does not necessarily make a route inexpensive. Fees reduce the amount that remains invested and earning returns. The SEC’s Dec. 12, 2025 custody bulletin recommends asking about annual asset-based fees, transaction fees, asset-transfer fees, and account setup and closure fees. If you use an ETP, add its product-level sponsor or operating fee.

Fee category What it may cover Questions to ask before funding
Trading or transaction fee Buying, selling, swapping, or executing an order Is it a flat amount, a percentage, or embedded in the spread? Does it vary by order size, payment method, asset, or account tier?
Spread or conversion cost The difference between the price you receive and a reference market price What price will be used, and is the spread disclosed separately from the commission?
Network or withdrawal fee Sending an asset to another address or withdrawing cash Is the charge fixed or variable? Does it change with network congestion or withdrawal method?
Asset-transfer fee Moving holdings between custodians or accounts Are transfers supported for the exact asset and network you use, and is there a minimum amount?
Annual asset-based fee Ongoing custody or account service calculated from holdings Is it charged on the balance, and how often is it deducted?
Account setup or closure fee Opening, closing, or administering an account Is there a one-time charge, a minimum balance, or a fee to transfer out before closing?
ETP sponsor or operating fee Running a securities product that provides bitcoin or ether exposure What is the current expense or sponsor fee, how is it reflected in returns, and what custody costs are included?

Request the current fee schedule and read the terms for the exact asset, transaction size, funding method, withdrawal method, and account tier. The available SEC material identifies categories to investigate, not a current lowest-cost provider or a cross-provider price table.

Why small recurring charges matter

The SEC’s July 23, 2025 fee bulletin illustrates the effect of fees with a hypothetical $100,000 investment growing at 4% annually for 20 years. It is an illustration—not a forecast, historical result, or crypto return estimate—and the bulletin’s chart values should not be reverse-engineered from that setup. The practical lesson is to compare recurring charges as well as the fee on the initial trade: a percentage applied year after year can materially reduce the balance that compounds.

What does crypto custody mean?

Custody is about who controls the private keys or passcodes needed to authorize transactions. The SEC explains: “Crypto wallets do not store crypto assets themselves; instead, they store the ‘private keys’ or passcodes for your crypto assets.” This sentence comes from the SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance’s Dec. 12, 2025 crypto asset custody bulletin.

The asset is recorded on its blockchain. A wallet—software, a device, or another interface—manages the credentials that let you access and move it. A seed phrase can restore a wallet, which makes that phrase a high-value secret rather than a password to share with support.

Self-custody

With self-custody, you control the private keys. That removes dependence on an exchange for routine access, but it makes you responsible for backups, device security, transaction checks, and recovery. If you lose the seed phrase, damage the device without a usable backup, or disclose the phrase to an attacker, access can be jeopardized. There may still be network or transaction fees, and self-custody does not protect you from a falling market price, a fraudulent token, or a compromised computer.

Third-party custody

With third-party custody, an exchange or dedicated custodian controls the keys on your behalf. This can simplify account recovery and trading, but it adds provider and access risk. Before depositing assets, ask:

  • How are keys protected, and what portion is held online (“hot”) versus offline (“cold”)?
  • Is storage subcontracted, and which entities can access or move assets?
  • Are customer assets segregated from company assets in the records and legal documents?
  • Can the firm lend, rehypothecate, stake, or commingle assets, and what consent is required?
  • What happens to withdrawals and records if the provider shuts down or enters bankruptcy?
  • What does insurance cover, what events are excluded, and is the coverage for the asset, the platform, or only a limited loss scenario?
  • Which privacy, identity-verification, geographic, and transaction limits apply?
  • What are the custody, transfer, withdrawal, and account fees?

The SEC warns that if a third-party custodian is hacked, shuts down, or goes bankrupt, a customer may lose access. An insurance statement is not a guarantee: read its stated limits, exclusions, deductibles, and claims process. Do not assume that deposit insurance or securities-account protection automatically covers crypto assets held through a crypto platform.

Hardware wallets: useful but not magic

A hardware wallet is a physical device designed to keep key-handling operations separated from an internet-connected computer. It can be a reasonable option for someone who has already decided to self-custody and can follow the backup procedure. It costs money to buy, requires careful setup, and does not prevent market losses, a user approving a bad transaction, seed-phrase theft, or every form of attack. Never enter a recovery phrase into a website, an unsolicited app, or a support chat.

Can you lose crypto if an exchange goes bankrupt?

Yes, you can lose access, and recovery may be delayed or incomplete. Bankruptcy does not automatically mean every customer loses everything, but the outcome depends on the provider’s contracts, asset records, segregation practices, lending or commingling arrangements, court process, and the law that applies. During a failure, withdrawals may stop while claims are sorted out.

Before using an exchange, find the written answers to the custody questions above. In particular, identify whether the firm promises to hold your exact assets, whether it may lend or reuse them, how customer claims are treated in an insolvency, and which legal entity actually holds the keys. Keep transaction records and account statements so you can document what you deposited and withdrew. Those records cannot guarantee recovery, but they make a claim or tax reconciliation more practical if access is interrupted.

Direct crypto ownership or a bitcoin/ether exchange-traded product?

An ETP changes how you obtain exposure; it does not remove the underlying asset’s volatility. Instead of transacting personally on a crypto platform and managing wallet keys, you buy a security through a securities account. The product has its own issuer or trust structure, custody arrangements, trading hours, brokerage costs, and sponsor fee.

Decision axis Direct ownership with self-custody Direct ownership with a custodian Bitcoin or ether ETP in a securities account
Who controls keys? You do; key backup and transaction authorization are your responsibility. The provider does; you rely on its access controls and terms. The product’s custodian controls the underlying assets; you hold shares or units in the product.
Main access risk Lost, exposed, or mishandled seed phrase or device. Provider hack, outage, restriction, insolvency, or account compromise. Brokerage, issuer, custodian, market-hours, and product-service risks.
Typical cost areas Network transactions, device purchase if used, and any trading venue fees. Trading, spread, withdrawal, transfer, custody, and account fees. Brokerage or trading charges plus the product’s sponsor or operating fee.
What you own The crypto asset recorded on its network. A claim or account balance governed by the provider’s terms. A security providing stated exposure to bitcoin or ether, not necessarily direct control of coins.
Legal and account protections Do not assume bank-deposit or securities-account protections. Read the provider’s terms and applicable law; do not infer coverage from the word “custodian.” Read the product prospectus and account rules. The SEC says spot bitcoin and ether ETPs discussed in its Sept. 9, 2024 bulletin are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940 and therefore are not subject to that law’s requirements applicable to registered funds, including certain valuation and custody requirements.

The ETP comparison applies to the bitcoin and ether products covered by the SEC bulletin, not to every fund or crypto-linked security. Check what the product actually owns or tracks, how it values holdings, where assets are held, and which fees apply.

A practical checklist before you invest

  1. Define the money’s job. Keep emergency cash and near-term obligations separate from speculative exposure. Decide in advance how much loss you could absorb without changing essential plans.
  2. Identify the exact asset and route. Record the token or ETP, the network or product structure, the country and account type, and what you will own after the transaction.
  3. Read the current disclosures. Review the fee schedule, custody terms, withdrawal rules, insolvency language, privacy policy, and product prospectus where applicable.
  4. Calculate the complete cost. Include spread, trading, network, withdrawal, transfer, recurring asset-based or sponsor fees, and account setup or closure charges.
  5. Choose custody deliberately. If self-custody is unsuitable, understand the provider’s key management, segregation, insurance limits, and failure procedures. If self-custody is chosen, create and test a secure backup without exposing the seed phrase.
  6. Harden account security. Use a unique strong password, multifactor authentication, device updates, withdrawal controls where available, and bookmarks or manually verified addresses rather than links in unsolicited messages.
  7. Run a small operational test. Confirm the exact address, network, destination, minimums, fees, and expected processing time before attempting a large transfer. A test transfer checks procedure; it does not validate an investment’s value or safety.
  8. Keep records and review access. Save confirmations, fees, transfers, and tax-relevant statements. Recheck terms and fee schedules when the provider, asset, or product changes.

Questions to ask a service before opening an account

  • Which legal entity holds the assets and controls the keys?
  • Are assets segregated, or may they be lent, reused, staked, or commingled?
  • What happens to withdrawals, records, and customer claims if the firm fails?
  • What exactly does any insurance cover, and what is excluded?
  • What are the all-in costs for my asset, order size, funding method, withdrawal method, and account tier?
  • Which jurisdictions, assets, networks, and withdrawal destinations are supported?
  • What security controls protect login and withdrawal actions, and how are phishing incidents handled?
  • For an ETP, what does it hold or track, who is the custodian, what is the sponsor fee, and what protections apply to the securities account?

Use the SEC’s investor materials as a starting point, then verify current terms directly with the service or product issuer. The SEC’s March 23, 2023 crypto asset securities alert, July 23, 2025 fee bulletin, and the custody and ETP bulletins linked above explain the risks and questions; they do not endorse a particular provider or predict returns.
