Use an exchange to access fiat money and markets; use a self-custody wallet when you need to control the transaction keys. They are not interchangeable products. An exchange is a service that matches buyers and sellers, processes deposits and withdrawals, and commonly holds the keys for balances in your account. A wallet is an interface for managing private keys and signing blockchain transactions. The cryptocurrency itself remains recorded on a blockchain, not inside either product.

You can use both: keep only the amount needed for trading or an imminent withdrawal with a custodian, and move other funds to a wallet you can secure properly. The right split depends on your location, assets, network, fees, technical confidence, and tolerance for platform or key-management risk.

What an exchange does

A centralized exchange provides market access. You create an account, complete whatever identity or eligibility checks apply in your jurisdiction, fund it with an accepted payment method, and place an order or use a conversion feature. The service records your resulting balance in its internal ledger. When the exchange controls the private keys, that balance is custodial even though the account shows that you own a particular amount.

An exchange is therefore practical for the parts of the process that involve traditional money: deposits, conversions between assets, selling, and withdrawing proceeds. It is also built for active trading. The convenience comes with dependence on the platform’s operations, solvency, security controls, account-access procedures, and withdrawal policies.

Buying on an exchange is not the same as withdrawing to a wallet

A purchase can be completed entirely inside the exchange’s ledger. Moving the asset to an external address is a separate blockchain transaction. Until that withdrawal is completed, the platform generally remains the keyholder. An exchange account can show a crypto balance without giving you the private key needed to authorize an on-chain transfer.

What a wallet does

A wallet stores or accesses the credentials that authorize blockchain transactions. Private keys (or a wallet’s equivalent signing credentials) authorize spending. A public key and its derived address let another party send assets to you. Wallet software and hardware do not contain coins; the blockchain contains the recorded balances, while the wallet protects and uses the credentials.

In self-custody, you control those credentials. That removes the exchange as the keyholder, but it also transfers responsibility to you. A lost private key can mean permanent loss of access. A recovery or seed phrase may restore the wallet after a device is lost or damaged, so anyone who obtains that phrase may be able to control the funds.

Hot and cold wallets

A hot wallet is connected to the internet while in use. It is convenient for frequent transfers, payments, and decentralized-application interactions, but an online device, browser session, or malicious approval can expose it to attack.

A cold wallet is typically a physical device kept disconnected except when signing. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Dec. 12, 2025 investor bulletin says cold wallets are generally less exposed to online cyberthreats than hot wallets, while warning that they are less convenient and can be lost, damaged, or stolen. A hardware device is a risk-reduction tool, not a guarantee. The recovery phrase and the transaction you approve still require careful protection.

Exchange account vs. self-custody wallet

Decision axis Exchange account Self-custody wallet
Who controls transaction keys? Typically the platform controls the custody keys. You control the keys or signing credentials.
Primary use Fiat access, buying, selling, conversion, and active trading. Direct on-chain transfers, payments, decentralized applications, and direct key control.
Recovery Login recovery may be available under the provider’s rules. Recovery depends on the wallet design and your secure backup of credentials.
Main exposure Platform custody, operations, solvency, account takeover, and withdrawal restrictions. Seed theft, lost credentials, device compromise, phishing, malicious approvals, and signing mistakes.
Costs Trading, account or custody, and withdrawal charges may apply. Blockchain network fees and possibly swap or bridge charges; hardware has an upfront cost.
Availability Depends on the provider and your jurisdiction. Software may be broadly accessible, but supported assets and networks vary.

Exact fees, supported currencies, legal protections, custody arrangements, and availability change by provider and country. Verify the current terms before depositing or transferring funds.

Where to buy cryptocurrency

For a first purchase or fiat deposit

An exchange is usually the straightforward route when you need to pay with a bank transfer or card, convert fiat to an asset, or sell back to fiat. Before funding an account, confirm that the service accepts residents of your jurisdiction, supports your payment method and intended asset, and permits withdrawals on the network your wallet uses.

  1. Check eligibility and terms. Read the provider’s current fee schedule, withdrawal rules, supported networks, identity requirements, and custody disclosures.
  2. Secure the account first. Use a unique password, enable multi-factor authentication, and protect the email account used for recovery.
  3. Deposit and purchase. Review the quoted spread, trading fee, settlement timing, and minimum order before confirming.
  4. Decide where the balance belongs. Leaving it on the exchange is custodial. Withdrawing it transfers control to the destination wallet and incurs the exchange’s withdrawal process and network costs.

For active trading

An exchange is designed for repeated orders, conversions, and market access. Keep only the balance needed for that activity and planned withdrawals. Derivatives, leverage, lending, staking, and yield products introduce additional risks that are separate from the basic exchange-versus-wallet decision.

For on-chain applications and payments

A self-custody wallet is commonly used to connect to decentralized applications and sign transactions directly. You must inspect the application, understand the permissions requested, and confirm the network and destination. Self-custody does not make a token, application, bridge, or smart contract safe.

For less frequent, longer-term holding

Self-custody can reduce dependence on a single exchange if you can manage a recovery phrase and verify every transaction. A hardware wallet can isolate signing keys from an internet-connected computer, but its backup phrase remains the critical recovery credential. Do not buy a device and assume the setup is safe without learning its recovery process and checking what appears on the device when signing.

If you are not ready to manage a seed phrase

Do not transfer a substantial amount until you understand how the wallet is backed up and restored. The SEC’s custody guidance specifically asks users to consider whether they are comfortable setting up a wallet, maintaining it, and taking sole responsibility for the credentials. A platform account may offer a familiar recovery route, but that convenience leaves the platform in control of the keys.

Choose amounts according to your own spending needs, transaction costs, recovery ability, and tolerance for either platform failure or self-custody mistakes. Splitting funds can reduce concentration in one failure mode, but it also creates more accounts, backups, and procedures to maintain.

How to move crypto from an exchange to a wallet

Blockchain transfers can be difficult or impossible to reverse. A wrong network or address may make funds inaccessible, and recovery is not assured. Use this sequence every time:

  1. Identify the exact asset. Similar tickers can represent different assets or contracts. Select the intended asset on both services.
  2. Match the blockchain network. The exchange’s withdrawal network must be one the destination wallet supports for that asset. A matching ticker alone does not establish compatibility.
  3. Generate the receiving address in the intended wallet. Copy it from the wallet rather than typing it. Compare the beginning and end, and use any available address-verification display.
  4. Check the memo, destination tag, or other identifier. Some assets or services require an additional field. Omitting it can delay crediting or require a manual recovery process.
  5. Review fees and limits. Check the withdrawal charge, minimum amount, processing policy, and whether the displayed fee includes a network fee.
  6. Consider a small test transfer. For a significant amount, a test can confirm address and network compatibility. Weigh the extra network cost and any minimum withdrawal against the value of reducing a transfer error.
  7. Confirm on the wallet and blockchain. Wait for the required confirmations before treating the transfer as settled. Keep the transaction ID for troubleshooting.

Security responsibilities and recovery

If an exchange holds the keys

The platform is responsible for key custody, internal controls, withdrawal operations, and account-access systems. You are still responsible for protecting your login, recovery email, authentication factors, and devices. Research the custodian’s background, applicable regulation, supported assets, insurance terms, security practices, use of subcontractors, whether customer assets may be used as collateral, whether assets are commingled, and the complete fee schedule. These checks reduce uncertainty; they do not guarantee safety.

A hack, shutdown, insolvency, or account lock can interrupt access. The SEC’s investor alert also cautions that crypto-asset accounts do not receive the same SIPC- or FDIC-type protections as securities accounts at registered broker-dealers or deposits at insured banks. That discussion concerns crypto-asset securities and related intermediaries; protections differ by asset, service, and jurisdiction, so do not assume a blanket guarantee.

If you hold the keys yourself

  • Never share a private key or recovery phrase, including with someone claiming to be support.
  • Store backups offline in a location protected from theft, fire, water, and unauthorized access.
  • Use a strong device password and keep wallet software and the operating system current.
  • Treat unsolicited links, airdrops, support messages, and approval requests as potential phishing.
  • Read the exact transaction and permissions shown by the wallet or hardware device before signing.
  • Keep a documented recovery plan that a trusted person could follow without seeing the secret phrase.

Proof-of-reserves statements are not equivalent to a financial-statement audit, according to the SEC alert. Treat them as limited information rather than proof that every customer can withdraw in every circumstance.

What if a hardware wallet is lost?

The device itself is replaceable if you have the correct recovery phrase and the replacement wallet supports the same recovery standard. If the phrase is missing, exposed, or recorded incorrectly, replacement may not restore access and an exposed phrase may require moving funds to a new wallet. Never enter a recovery phrase into a website or send it to support.

Costs, limits, and timing

Buying can involve a payment fee, a trading fee, and a spread. Holding an exchange balance may involve account or custody charges. Withdrawing usually adds an exchange withdrawal charge and a blockchain network fee; network congestion can affect timing and cost. A self-custody wallet may charge no separate account fee, but on-chain transactions still require network fees, and swaps or bridges can add their own charges. Hardware devices have an upfront purchase price.

Because these amounts and policies change, check the confirmation screen and current terms immediately before acting. Also check minimum withdrawals, daily limits, geographic restrictions, identity-review holds, and whether an asset is supported on the network you intend to use.

What can go wrong and how to respond

The exchange freezes withdrawals

Do not assume a freeze is temporary or permanent. Read the provider’s status notice and terms, preserve account and transaction records, and contact support through the verified channel. Avoid sending additional funds to “unlock” a withdrawal. If the issue concerns insolvency, a hack, or a regulatory restriction, the outcome and timeline depend on the provider and jurisdiction; no recovery is assured.

The transfer used the wrong network

Stop sending further funds and identify the exact asset, network, address, and transaction ID. Contact the destination service’s verified support team with those details. Some network mismatches can be recovered only when the recipient controls the relevant keys; others cannot be recovered. Do not pay an unsolicited “recovery agent.”

You approved a malicious transaction

Disconnect the wallet from the site, revoke risky approvals using a trusted method supported by the relevant network, and move remaining assets to a fresh wallet if the signing key may be compromised. Record the transaction ID and report the incident to the wallet provider and appropriate authorities. Recovery is uncertain.

You lose account access

Use only the exchange’s published recovery flow. Never disclose a password, one-time code, private key, or seed phrase to a caller or chat agent. If the email account or authentication device was compromised, secure those accounts first.

Questions to settle before choosing

  • Do I need fiat deposits, conversions, or frequent trading?
  • Will I use a decentralized application or make direct on-chain payments?
  • Can I back up and protect a recovery phrase for years?
  • Which exact assets and networks do I need?
  • What fees, minimums, limits, insurance terms, and withdrawal rules apply where I live?
  • What is my plan if the exchange is unavailable or the wallet device is lost?

The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance’s Dec. 12, 2025 bulletin is educational staff guidance, not a rule with legal force. Its practical message is still useful: decide who controls the keys, understand the recovery burden, and verify the custodian and transfer details before committing funds. The SEC’s May 7, 2014 alert gives a dated historical reminder of volatility—Bitcoin’s exchange rate fell more than 50% in a single day in the example it discussed—not a current market forecast.
