Choose third-party crypto custody if you prefer a service to manage access to the private keys and are comfortable relying on its security, policies and continued operation. Choose self-custody if you want direct control and can reliably secure and recover your keys. Neither is universally safer or better: the right fit depends on your technical comfort, recovery habits, transaction needs and tolerance for provider dependence.

“Hot versus cold” describes whether a wallet connects to the internet; “self-custody versus third-party custody” describes who controls access to the keys. Those are separate choices: hot and cold options can exist under either custody arrangement, according to the SEC’s retail investor bulletin.

What custody means in practice

A crypto wallet generally stores the private keys or passcodes used to authorize transactions; it does not hold the crypto assets themselves. Losing a key can mean permanently losing access. The SEC describes custody in terms of how and where a person stores and accesses crypto assets.

Self-custody

With self-custody, you control access to your keys. That gives you direct control, but also makes you responsible for setting up and maintaining the wallet, protecting its key and recovery phrase, and planning for device loss or damage. If access is lost or compromised, recovery may not be possible.

Third-party custody

With third-party custody, an exchange or dedicated custodian manages and controls access to the keys. You rely less on your own key-handling, but depend on the provider’s security, operations and terms. A hack, shutdown or bankruptcy could leave you unable to access assets.

Compare the trade-offs that matter to you

Consideration Self-custody Third-party custody
Who controls key access? You control it. The custodian controls it.
Security and recovery You protect the keys and recovery method, and plan for loss or damage. You rely on the provider’s security and recovery procedures; ask how keys are stored and who can access them.
Convenience and online exposure Depends on the wallet type and your setup. Hot wallets connect to the internet and are convenient for transactions, but face cyberthreat exposure. Cold wallets are typically physical devices and generally less exposed to cyberthreats, but are less convenient. Depends on the provider’s setup and services. Ask whether access is hot or cold and how transactions are handled.
Failure risk Loss, damage or compromise of wallet access may cause permanent loss. A hack, shutdown or bankruptcy may mean loss of access; understand the provider’s failure procedures.
Assets, privacy and asset use Check that the wallet supports the assets you need and consider how your transactions and related data may be exposed. Check supported assets, privacy and data handling, and whether customer assets may be lent or commingled.
Fees Review any costs associated with the wallet and transactions you make. Compare account setup, maintenance, transaction, transfer and closure fees.

The comparisons above reflect the trade-offs identified in the SEC bulletin. A cold wallet does not remove the need for a secure recovery plan: its device can still be lost, damaged or stolen.

Use your habits to make the choice

Self-custody may fit if you can maintain the recovery process

Consider self-custody if you want direct key control, are comfortable managing the wallet, and can protect the recovery information without making it inaccessible to yourself. A seed phrase can restore a wallet, so store it securely and never share it. Decide how you would recover access if the device were lost or damaged before relying on that wallet.

Third-party custody may fit if you accept provider dependence

Consider a custodian if you prefer provider-managed key access and do not want to personally manage the keys. This shifts, rather than eliminates, risk: you must assess the provider’s security, terms, asset practices and ability to keep operating. Do not assume that crypto held with a custodian has bank-deposit protections; check whether insurance exists and read its terms.

A mixed approach is an option, not a universal solution

You can evaluate using different arrangements for different needs, such as keeping some assets with a provider and managing others yourself. That adds complexity and does not guarantee better security. Choose only an arrangement you can understand and maintain; there is no evidence-based allocation that is right for every holder.

Questions to ask before choosing a custodian

  • Key control: Where and how are keys stored, and who can access them?
  • Security and providers: What security practices are in place, and does the custodian subcontract any part of the service?
  • Assets and operations: Which assets are supported, and what happens if the provider is hacked, shuts down or becomes insolvent?
  • Insurance: Is any coverage offered, what does it cover, and what exclusions or conditions apply?
  • Use of customer assets: Can assets be lent or otherwise used, and are customer holdings commingled?
  • Privacy: What account, identity and transaction data does the provider collect or share?
  • Fees: What are the charges for setup, maintenance, transactions, transfers and account closure?

What U.S. regulatory guidance does—and does not—settle

The SEC’s December 12, 2025 investor bulletin explains custody considerations for retail investors; it is guidance for evaluating risks, not a recommendation that all individuals use one arrangement. Separately, on October 1, 2026, the SEC announced proposed rules and amendments addressing crypto custody by investment advisers and regulated funds. The proposal would allow self-custody in certain circumstances and permit state trust companies to act as custodians subject to conditions. It is a proposal with an institutional scope, not a rule telling an individual retail holder which option to choose. See the SEC announcement.
