Crypto ATMs and other walk-up crypto kiosks let customers use cash to buy cryptocurrency and send it to a wallet address. Their U.S. footprint has expanded sharply, but machine counts do not tell us whether more people are using them or why. The clearest explanation is practical: for someone with cash who wants an in-person purchase, a nearby kiosk offers a direct route into crypto. That convenience comes with fees, identity checks, and a serious risk of irreversible loss—especially when a stranger tells you to use a machine.

What a walk-up crypto service does

A crypto ATM—also called a Bitcoin ATM or crypto kiosk—accepts cash and sends cryptocurrency to a wallet address. Despite the name, it does not work like a conventional ATM that dispenses cash from a bank account. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes these machines as a way to convert cash into crypto. CFTC: Crypto ATM scams

The basic appeal is the in-person, cash-to-crypto transaction. A customer may scan a wallet QR code, insert cash, and receive crypto at the address provided. The exact steps, supported assets, limits, identity checks, fees, and support options depend on the operator and location. A kiosk is therefore best understood as a purchase channel, not a universal kind of machine with uniform terms.

Are crypto kiosks actually becoming more popular?

The strongest evidence is that more machines were reported in the United States—not that kiosk visits or customers increased at the same rate. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), citing operator self-reports to Coin ATM Radar, reported about 4,250 U.S. Bitcoin ATM installations in January 2020 and about 32,000 in June 2024. Those are installation counts from an industry tracker, not transaction volume or user counts. FTC: Bitcoin ATMs—How to Avoid Scams

Broader crypto-use figures cannot fill that gap because they do not identify how people acquired crypto. The Federal Reserve’s report on its 2025 U.S. household survey says 10% of adults used cryptocurrency for investment or transactions in 2025, compared with 12% in 2021. In 2025, 9% bought or held crypto as an investment, while 2% used it to buy something or make a payment and 1% sent it to friends or family. None of those figures specifies kiosk use. Federal Reserve: Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households in 2025

Likewise, UK data describe a different acquisition channel and population: the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), drawing on YouGov panel fieldwork from 5 August to 2 September 2025, found that 73% of UK cryptoasset users used centralized exchanges to buy or obtain cryptoassets, up 4 percentage points from 2024. That is not a kiosk-use statistic, and it should not be compared as though it measured the same thing as U.S. installation counts. FCA: Cryptoassets consumer research 2025

Why someone might choose a kiosk

A walk-up service can suit people who want to use cash and prefer an in-person transaction over opening an online account or arranging a bank transfer. A machine in a retail location may also be easier to reach than a service that requires a dedicated app or account. These are plausible convenience factors, not established causes of the increase in installations or proof that kiosk use is growing.

The trade-off is that convenience does not establish that a kiosk is cheaper, safer, or more private than an online exchange. To compare channels, check the complete amount of cash required for the crypto you will receive, including the quoted exchange rate and fees; whether the service lets you sell as well as buy; its identity-verification requirements and limits; which assets it supports; where the crypto is sent and who controls the wallet; and how receipts, customer support, refunds, and local legal protections work. Provider terms and prices vary, and the available national data do not establish a general winner.

Fees, identity checks, and local rules

There is no supported universal fee or identity-check rule for every crypto ATM. Before inserting cash, read the machine’s displayed terms and confirm the exchange rate, all fees, transaction limits, supported cryptocurrency, verification steps, destination address, and what to do if a transaction fails. Do not assume that a displayed rate is the final cost or that a kiosk can reverse or refund a completed transfer.

Requirements also depend on jurisdiction. In Australia, the financial intelligence agency AUSTRAC announced on 17 July 2025 that crypto ATM providers would face a A$5,000 limit on cash deposits and withdrawals, enhanced customer due diligence, and mandatory scam warnings. The announcement followed a taskforce finding that some providers were not meeting anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorism-financing obligations. AUSTRAC also cited approximately 150,000 crypto ATM transactions moving close to A$275 million each year. These are Australian figures and conditions, not a global rule; check the current requirements where you live. AUSTRAC: Crackdown on crypto ATMs

Why the convenience carries a serious scam risk

A crypto transfer may be quick, but a mistaken or scam-directed payment can be difficult or impossible to recover. The CFTC warns that a transfer to an address supplied by another person cannot be reversed. It advises pausing, ending the interaction, and contacting the institution the caller claims to represent using independently verified contact details. The CFTC’s guidance is explicit: “No government agency, legitimate financial institution, or reputable company will instruct you to move money using crypto ATMs, gift cards, or couriers.” CFTC: Crypto ATM scams

Scam losses are substantial, although they are not a measure of total kiosk activity. The FTC estimated that reported fraud losses involving Bitcoin ATMs rose nearly tenfold from 2020 to 2023 and exceeded $65 million in the first half of 2024. It estimated that about 86% of BTM fraud-loss reports in that half-year involved government impersonation, business impersonation, and/or tech-support scams, excluding reports with unspecified scam type. The FTC based these estimates on keyword analysis of report narratives and cautions that reported losses may understate the harm because many consumers do not report fraud. FTC: Bitcoin ATMs—How to Avoid Scams

More recent figures show the problem continued: the CFTC reports more than $388 million in crypto-ATM scam losses in 2025, a 58% increase over 2024, based on FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center data. These are reported losses—not a measure of all actual losses or of how many people used kiosks. CFTC: Crypto ATM scams

Stop if someone directs you to a machine

  • Do not withdraw cash or use a kiosk because of an unexpected call, text, email, or pop-up.
  • Treat claims that you must use crypto to protect money, fix a computer problem, pay a government agency, or resolve an emergency as major scam warnings. The FTC says real businesses and government agencies will not instruct people to use a Bitcoin ATM to protect funds or fix a problem. FTC: Bitcoin ATMs—How to Avoid Scams
  • End the conversation. Contact the organization through a phone number or website you find independently, not contact details given by the person pressuring you.
  • Do not share a wallet QR code, verification code, password, or screen access with a stranger. Never let someone else direct you through a transfer while you are at the machine.

If you have already sent cash or crypto

Contact the kiosk operator promptly using the contact information on your receipt or verified official website, and keep the receipt, transaction details, wallet address, and messages. Also report the incident to the relevant law-enforcement or consumer-protection agency in your jurisdiction. Reporting does not guarantee recovery, and a completed crypto transfer may not be reversible, but records can help document what happened.
