Use Confederate Partition early, switch to Primogeniture when its innovation and law requirements are met, and choose Elective only when you can reliably control the voters. Confederate Partition is available in the early game but can divide your titles and even create new titles for younger children. Primogeniture gives every title to the oldest eligible child, making it the most predictable way to preserve a centralized realm. Elective can place a preferred relative or vassal on a particular title, but the result depends on an election and can overturn your plan.

The right law depends on four questions: how much fragmentation your realm can survive, whether the law is currently available, how much control you have over succession, and which failure you would rather manage—partition, delayed access to a stronger law, or a lost election.

The three laws at a glance

Law What happens at succession Realm cohesion Availability Player control Main failure mode
Confederate Partition Titles are divided among eligible children; new titles can be created if enough land is held. Low to moderate Common in early feudal and tribal play; tribal rulers are locked to it. You can prepare the inheritance, but the division remains. Fragmentation and powerful landed siblings.
Primogeniture The oldest eligible child receives all titles; younger children receive nothing under this law. Highest Later access after the innovation_primogeniture innovation or a historical access trigger, subject to government conditions. High and predictable once available. Waiting for access or being stuck with an undesirable eldest heir.
Elective The ruler and eligible direct vassals vote on a title heir from the permitted family and vassal pool. Variable Depends on the title law, government, culture and eligible electors. Potentially high if you control the electorate. Losing the vote or electing a candidate who weakens the realm.

This comparison reflects the documented mechanics in the current law entries and the strategic consequences that follow from them. Always open the law panel in your game before changing succession: requirements, eligible candidates and costs can change between patches.

How Confederate Partition divides your realm

Confederate Partition states that titles are divided equally between your children. The exact rule is more specific than an equal split of counties: the player heir receives the primary title, the realm capital and the direct de jure titles associated with that primary title. Younger eligible children receive other titles, beginning with titles at the primary-title rank when those are available and then moving to lower-ranking titles. If you control enough land, the game can create additional titles for those children at succession.

The title-creation behavior is the distinctive danger. A realm that appears to have one kingdom can emerge from a ruler’s death with a second kingdom created for a younger child, turning an internal inheritance into a major political division. The current Confederate Partition entry documents this behavior at CK3 Database.

What your player heir keeps

  • The primary title selected for the succession.
  • The county containing your realm capital.
  • Direct de jure titles tied to the primary title, subject to the active succession rules.

What younger children can receive

  • Other titles of the primary-title rank, if your holdings allow them.
  • Lower-ranking titles after higher-ranking titles have been allocated.
  • Newly created titles when the realm contains enough land for creation under Confederate Partition.

Why Confederate Partition is still useful

Confederate Partition is not automatically a mistake. It is the practical early-game law because it is associated with early feudal and tribal starts, while tribal rulers cannot simply choose a later law at will. A compact realm can survive one or two divisions if the player heir keeps the capital and the main title. Younger children may become useful allies, dynasty members or buffers against external enemies.

The cost recorded for passing Confederate Partition is a 500-prestige base cost in CK3 Database data labeled patch 1.20.1.1. Treat that figure as patch-sensitive rather than a universal price; your government, current patch and other law conditions may alter what the game displays.

How to reduce the damage before death

  1. Open the succession preview. The character or realm interface shows which child is the player heir and which titles are projected to change hands. Do this after every major conquest, because adding land can make a new title creatable.
  2. Keep the core compact. Concentrate counties around the capital and primary title instead of spreading holdings across several disconnected regions that can become a second realm.
  3. Plan the title hierarchy. If a younger child must inherit, decide whether giving that child a lower-ranking title now is safer than allowing the game to allocate a higher-ranking title automatically later.
  4. Check creation thresholds. New titles are the most disruptive outcome. Before expanding, inspect whether your new counties would let the succession create another duchy or kingdom.
  5. Use the player heir’s position deliberately. Because the player heir receives the capital and primary title, choose a primary title that keeps your strategic heartland together.

These steps cannot turn Confederate Partition into single-heir succession. They only make the remaining division more manageable.

Regular Partition and High Partition: the middle ground

Regular Partition and High Partition are separate laws in the same succession-law family. They are useful transitional options when Primogeniture is not yet available, but the precise title share depends on the law shown in your current game. Check the active tooltip rather than assuming that a rule from another patch still applies.

The practical distinction is that moving away from Confederate Partition removes the documented automatic title-creation behavior. That can prevent a realm from generating entirely new titles for younger children, even though multiple children may still inherit existing titles. The succession preview is therefore essential: compare the projected title map, not just the law name.

Why Primogeniture preserves the realm

Primogeniture is single-heir succession. The oldest eligible child—the player heir—receives all titles, while younger children receive nothing under this law. The current law entry describes the effect as, “Under Primogeniture Succession, your oldest child inherits all your Titles.” See the full entry at CK3 Database.

The trade-off is access, not inheritance

Primogeniture offers the strongest cohesion of the three choices, but it is normally a later-game tool. Its start condition includes the culture innovation innovation_primogeniture or a historical access trigger. Exact change conditions vary by government, so the law panel—not a remembered checklist—should be your final authority.

The recorded base cost is 500 prestige in data labeled CK3 patch 1.20.1.1. Other costs, including piety, can vary by context. Save the required resources before the innovation completes so that the law can be changed as soon as the government and other conditions permit it.

When to switch

  • Switch as soon as the strategic conditions align if your realm is large enough that another partition would create rival kingdoms or split essential coastal and inland regions.
  • Wait when the current ruler is near death and the change would not stabilize the next succession. Check the projected heir and the law’s effective date in the interface before spending prestige.
  • Delay if the oldest eligible child is catastrophically unsuitable. Primogeniture is predictable, but it predictably hands everything to that child. A different law may give you more political options while you repair the line of succession.

What Primogeniture does not solve

It does not remove every succession problem. The oldest eligible child may have poor traits, a weak claim to another title, or a marriage that creates diplomatic complications. It also does not override a title-specific succession law attached to an individual title. Inspect the title succession rules in addition to the realm law.

How Elective succession works

Elective is a political system applied to a title rather than a simple realm-wide promise. Under Confederation Elective, the ruler and all direct vassals can nominate a title heir from among eligible close family members and vassals. Voting strength is primarily affected by fame, devotion and the number of count-tier vassals, according to the current entry at CK3 Database.

Why players choose Elective

Elective can let you place a preferred candidate on a strategically important kingdom or duchy instead of accepting the default oldest child. It is particularly attractive when one child has the best combination of age, traits, military ability and diplomatic relationships, but is not the automatic heir.

It can also be used to keep a title with a favored branch of the dynasty or to prevent an unsuitable child from inheriting the realm’s most valuable crown. That control is conditional: you must understand who votes, which candidates qualify and how much voting strength each side has.

The political price of control

Elective creates a ballot you can lose. A ruler with low fame or devotion, hostile direct vassals, or too many count-tier electors may be unable to force the desired result. The law also applies to a specific title, and separate titles can have their own succession laws. A kingdom you control through one elective law may therefore follow a different inheritance rule from another kingdom in the same realm.

The Confederation Elective entry records a 500-prestige base cost in data labeled patch 1.20.1. Costs and eligibility are patch-sensitive. Confirm the current number and candidate list in the title’s law panel before committing.

A reliable Elective checklist

  1. Choose the exact title. Open the title’s succession-law view; do not assume that changing one crown changes every title you own.
  2. List the eligible candidates. Confirm that your preferred child, close relative or vassal is actually permitted by the law.
  3. Identify every elector. Direct vassals are part of the voting body, so a newly granted county or an altered vassal contract can change the result.
  4. Compare voting strength. Fame, devotion and count-tier-vassal numbers are the documented primary influences. Treat your current lead as a margin to protect, not a guaranteed victory.
  5. Recheck after succession events. A death, title grant, imprisonment, conversion or change in fame can alter the electorate before your ruler dies.

Which law should you choose?

Choose Confederate Partition when

  • You are in the early game and Primogeniture is not yet available.
  • Your realm is compact enough that the player heir can remain powerful after the split.
  • You can tolerate younger children holding independent or semi-independent titles.
  • You are willing to use the succession preview and limit title creation before death.

Choose Primogeniture when

  • The innovation_primogeniture requirement or a valid historical trigger is complete.
  • Preserving one centralized realm matters more than giving younger children land.
  • Your oldest eligible child is an acceptable successor.
  • You have enough prestige and meet the government-specific change conditions shown in the law panel.

Choose Elective when

  • You understand the title’s elector pool and can maintain a voting majority.
  • A preferred candidate is eligible but would not inherit under the default law.
  • You are applying the law to a specific crown whose succession you can monitor separately.
  • You accept that a future ruler, vassal revolt or change in fame can reverse the result.

How to stop your realm from splitting

There is no universal early-game switch that makes Confederate Partition behave like Primogeniture. Realm preservation is a sequence of decisions:

  1. Monitor the projected inheritance after every conquest. New land can create a title that did not exist in the previous succession preview.
  2. Keep the capital and primary title in the strongest geographic core. The player heir receives both under Confederate Partition.
  3. Prefer a transitional law when it removes automatic title creation. Compare Regular or High Partition in the current tooltip and inspect the exact projected shares.
  4. Research the primogeniture innovation. Once the innovation and government-specific conditions are satisfied, prepare the prestige and change the law through the succession interface.
  5. Use Elective only with an actual vote plan. Count electors, assess fame and devotion, and check every title that may follow a different law.
  6. Reopen the law panel before the ruler’s final years. The relevant heir, elector list and title inventory can change after marriages, deaths, grants and wars.

Common mistakes and fixes

“I switched to Elective, so every title will use it.”

Fix: Succession laws can be title-specific. Open each kingdom, duchy or other important title and verify its own law.

“My second kingdom appeared from nowhere.”

Fix: Under Confederate Partition, enough land can allow new titles to be created for younger children. Review the succession preview before expanding further.

“Primogeniture is unlocked, but the game will not let me select it.”

Fix: The innovation is only one part of the requirement. Government, prestige, piety and other conditions can apply; read the exact law tooltip for the current patch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“My candidate was leading, then lost the election.”

Fix: Recalculate the electorate after every vassal change and succession event. Fame, devotion and count-tier-vassal composition affect voting strength, and a narrow lead is not secure.

Bottom line: the best law by play stage

Confederate Partition is the workable starting point, not the permanent ideal. Use it while building innovations and keep the realm compact enough to survive the inheritance. Primogeniture is the best law for long-term cohesion once its innovation and government conditions are met, because the oldest eligible child receives every title. Elective is the specialist option: it can outperform both laws when you control the voters and have a clearly superior candidate, but it carries the unique risk of losing the ballot. Compare the projected title map and the exact law tooltip before every change.
