Yes—you can watch Crunchyroll on a TV without a PS5. Crunchyroll supports PS5, many Samsung and LG smart TVs, Android TV/Google TV, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV and Chromecast. The deciding factors are the exact device model, its operating-system version and whether the Crunchyroll app is offered in your local app store. If a supported app is already available on your television or PS5, buying another player is unnecessary.
Which option works for your setup?
Think of the choice as three routes to the same service: use a PS5 that is already connected to the television, install the native app on a compatible smart TV, or add a streaming device when the first two options are unavailable. The broad device family is not enough to guarantee support. A television described only as “smart,” or a product sold as “Fire TV,” can still be too old, use an unsupported operating-system version, or have no local listing for Crunchyroll.

The available documentation does not establish that one of these platforms is faster, has better picture quality, buffers less, or offers a superior interface. Choose on compatibility and convenience rather than an unverified performance ranking.

Requirements to check
- Crunchyroll identifies PS5 support beginning at system software version 6.00.00.00.
- The console must be connected to the television and online so it can reach the PlayStation Store and the streaming service.
- App availability can still vary by country or account region; search the store on the console you will actually use.
If the console is below the stated system version, update it through the PS5 system-software settings before troubleshooting the app. The support listing gives a minimum version, not a promise that every future app release will run on every older configuration.

Install from the PlayStation Store
- From the PS5 home screen, open PlayStation Store.
- Switch to the Media area.
- Search for Crunchyroll.
- Select the app and choose Download.
- Return to the media area, open Crunchyroll and sign in with your account.
Install from Media Home
- Open Media Home on the PS5.
- Choose All Apps.
- Find Crunchyroll.
- Select Download, then launch the installed app.
Crunchyroll also documents QR-code sign-in on PS5 for app version 02.001.004. If that version-specific screen appears, scan the code with a mobile device and follow the displayed account-linking instructions. App interfaces and sign-in methods can change, so use the current on-screen instructions if your version looks different.
What the PlayStation documentation confirms
The PlayStation help material describes profiles, audio-language controls, available closed captions and mature-content settings. Those are documented capabilities of the app experience described there; they are not evidence that every device has identical menus or feature timing. No complete feature-parity matrix is established for PS5, televisions and streaming players.
When a PS5 is the sensible choice
Use the PS5 when it is already wired or connected to the television, has the required system software and exposes Crunchyroll in the store. It avoids purchasing an additional player and keeps streaming alongside the console’s other media apps. If the PS5 is in another room, consumes the only convenient HDMI connection, or belongs to someone else in the household, a native TV app or separate streaming device may be more practical even though the console is technically supported.

Watching on a Samsung smart TV
Model and software threshold
Crunchyroll’s Samsung guidance covers supported Smart TVs from 2017 or newer running Tizen OS 3.0 or later. These are vendor-specific thresholds, not a rule that every smart TV made after 2017 supports the service. Samsung models sold in different regions can have different app catalogs, and a television that cannot update to the required Tizen release will not meet the documented requirement.

Install through Smart Hub
- Open Smart Hub on the Samsung TV.
- Go to Apps.
- Search for Crunchyroll.
- Select the app and choose Download or the equivalent install command shown by the TV.
- Launch it, then complete the account sign-in shown on screen.
If search returns no result, first confirm the model year and Tizen version in the TV’s support or system-information screen. Next check that the Samsung account and TV region are set to a market where the app is offered. Do not assume that changing a region will be harmless: regional settings can affect other installed services, and availability is ultimately controlled by the local store.
Watching on an LG smart TV
Model and software threshold
Crunchyroll documents support for LG televisions beginning with 2018 models running webOS 4.0 or later. As with Samsung, “smart TV” is not a sufficient compatibility check. The exact webOS release, model family and country storefront determine whether the app can be installed.
Install through the LG Content Store
- Open the LG Content Store from the TV launcher.
- Use search to find Crunchyroll.
- Select the app and choose the install option.
- Open Crunchyroll after installation and sign in using the method presented by the app.
When the app is absent, verify the television’s webOS version and apply any available TV firmware update. Then check the country setting and search again. An unsupported model cannot be made compatible merely by reinstalling the store; in that case, a supported external player is the next option to investigate.
Using a streaming stick or other external player
What the supported-device list means
Crunchyroll lists Fire TV, Roku and Chromecast among its supported categories, as well as Android TV/Google TV and Apple TV. Amazon describes Fire TV Stick as a streaming media player category. Neither statement proves that every generation, regional variant or operating-system build of a device has the Crunchyroll app. Treat the category as a starting point, then verify the exact model in the app store you will use.

Check compatibility before buying
- Identify the exact television model and confirm whether its native store already lists Crunchyroll.
- If it does not, identify the exact streaming-device model, generation and country of purchase.
- Open the manufacturer’s local app-store listing, or check the current Crunchyroll supported-devices page, and confirm that Crunchyroll is available for that model and region.
- Check that the TV has a suitable HDMI input and that the device can connect to your home network.
- Only then decide whether the external player solves the compatibility gap.
A streaming stick is therefore a fallback, not a universal upgrade. It is most useful when the television’s operating system is unsupported or its app store no longer offers the service. If the native TV app or PS5 app already works for your needs, the cited documentation does not establish a reason to buy another device.
Typical setup sequence
- Connect the streaming device to an available HDMI port and its power supply.
- Select that HDMI input on the television.
- Complete the device’s network and account setup.
- Open its app store and search for Crunchyroll.
- Install the app only if the store lists it for that exact device and region.
- Launch Crunchyroll and sign in using the displayed account method.
The menu names vary by platform, so do not infer a Fire TV installation path from a Roku or Chromecast interface. The important verification is the local listing for the exact hardware, not the product family name on the box.
PS5 vs. smart TV vs. streaming stick: a practical decision framework
Start with hardware you already own
Check the devices physically connected to the television before considering a purchase. A supported PS5 app or a supported native TV app gives you a direct route with no additional player. Existing hardware also reduces setup work: there is no new remote, HDMI port or device account to manage.

Record the model number, operating-system version and store region. For the documented television examples, that means Samsung 2017 or newer with Tizen 3.0 or later, or LG 2018 or newer with webOS 4.0 or later. For PS5, check for system software 6.00.00.00 or later. For Fire TV, Roku, Chromecast, Android TV/Google TV and Apple TV, verify the exact model in the current local store because the broad category does not cover every device.

Consider who needs access
A PS5 may be unavailable when someone is gaming, while a television app or separate player can remain accessible. Conversely, adding a streaming stick creates another remote and input to manage. The best choice is the one that is both supported and available at the time people actually watch.
Separate documented features from assumptions
Profiles, audio-language controls, available closed captions and mature-content settings are described in the PlayStation material. The sources do not establish that these controls appear identically on every smart-TV and streaming-device app. If a particular subtitle, language or parental-control behavior is essential, check the current app documentation or the menus on the device before committing to a purchase.

There is no cited comparative test for launch speed, buffering frequency, resolution, HDR, audio formats, subtitle synchronization, controller support or interface quality across these platforms. A device may feel different because of its hardware, network connection, TV settings or app version, but that would be an individual setup observation rather than an established ranking. Do not select a platform on promises that it is inherently faster or provides better picture quality unless you have device-specific evidence for your model and network.
Likewise, no named statistic establishes market share, average performance or reliability for PS5 versus television apps or streaming sticks. The useful, supportable comparison is compatibility, installation path, purchase necessity and the features explicitly documented for each app environment.

Troubleshooting when Crunchyroll is missing or will not install
The app does not appear in search
- Check the exact model and operating-system version against the applicable support requirement.
- Confirm the device’s country or storefront; app availability can be regional.
- Install pending system or TV firmware updates, then search again.
- On a streaming device, verify the generation and regional variant rather than relying on the family name.
- If the model is outside the documented range, use a supported PS5, TV or external player instead of repeatedly reinstalling an incompatible store.
The app installs but sign-in fails
- Confirm that the device is online and that other store pages load.
- Use the current sign-in flow shown by the app; on PS5, QR-code sign-in is documented for app version 02.001.004 and may look different in another release.
- Check that you are signing into the intended Crunchyroll account and that the code has not expired before scanning.
- Restart the app after completing account linking. If the service reports an account or regional error, consult the current Crunchyroll help instructions for that message.
Playback is not as expected
- Do not infer an unsupported device from a single playback problem until you have checked the model, OS and app version.
- Test the network connection and install available device or app updates.
- Compare the same account on another supported device only as a diagnostic; that comparison does not prove one platform is universally better.
- For caption, audio-language or mature-content concerns, inspect the controls exposed by that app version because feature availability is not documented as identical across platforms.
Should you buy a Fire TV Stick?
Consider one only when your current television lacks a supported Crunchyroll app and you do not want to use a PS5. Fire TV Stick is a streaming media player category, and Crunchyroll lists Fire TV as a supported category, but you still need to verify the exact model and local app listing before purchase. The documentation does not justify replacing a working PS5 or compatible smart-TV app solely to watch anime.
Use the same conditional logic for any Roku, Chromecast, Android TV/Google TV or Apple TV device: confirm model-level and regional availability first, then check the HDMI and network requirements of your television. An external player solves an app-availability problem; it is not automatically a picture-quality or performance upgrade.
