To reliably monitor a scheduled job, track both whether the scheduler delivered the invocation and whether the job completed its meaningful work. Send a success heartbeat only after that work succeeds, allow for normal runtime and delivery variation before alerting, and retain enough failure detail to investigate.
Why monitor the scheduler and the job separately?
A scheduled task has at least two distinct outcomes: the scheduler may or may not invoke its target, and the target may or may not complete the intended work. A scheduler-side success does not prove that an import, backup, or report finished correctly. A job-side heartbeat alone may not explain whether the process never started or failed to report back.
Where available, use scheduler metrics to diagnose delivery and a completion heartbeat to confirm application work. What should a success heartbeat mean?
A success ping should mean that the operation the team cares about has completed—not merely that the process launched. Place it after the work and make the ping conditional on a successful exit. Report starts and failures when useful
A start signal can distinguish “never began” from “began but stalled.” When the monitoring service supports lifecycle endpoints, send a start signal at launch, then report success only after completion or report failure with the exit status or diagnostic output. Keep the success path and failure path unambiguous. If the job can partially complete, define what “success” means for that job—for example, whether all records must be processed or whether a documented partial result is acceptable.
When is a heartbeat the right monitoring method?
A heartbeat is a dead-man’s-switch pattern: the monitored process checks in, and the monitoring service alerts when expected check-ins stop. It fits periodic work such as backups and imports because silence can indicate a missed run or a process that did not report completion. If you need to know both that a background job completed and that a website or API is externally reachable, use separate signals: a completion heartbeat for the job and an external endpoint or API probe for availability. Neither signal substitutes for the other.

How should you set the expected interval and grace period?
Set the expected interval from the actual schedule, then add a grace period for ordinary runtime and delivery variation. A window that is too short creates false alarms; one that is too long delays detection of a materially late job.
For AWS EventBridge Scheduler, a scheduled invocation can occur within the specified minute rather than exactly at the minute’s start. Account for that timing behavior when defining when a check-in is late. AWS EventBridge Scheduler schedule types

- Base the interval on the configured schedule and the intended completion cadence.
- Include normal job runtime and expected delivery variation in the grace period.
- Choose a window that still surfaces a late job soon enough to act.
- Revisit the settings when the schedule or runtime profile changes.

Select based on the failure modes you need to see rather than assuming the approaches are interchangeable.

How do you make alerts actionable?
Route notifications according to job importance and the team responsible for recovery. A single undifferentiated alert for every missed check-in can obscure urgent failures. Include enough context to identify the job and failure stage in the alert or its linked incident details: whether it failed to start, failed during work, missed its completion check-in, or encountered scheduler delivery errors. Preserve detailed delivery failure data in a DLQ when the scheduler supports one, and monitor that queue so retained messages do not become an overlooked backlog.
