Spoilers for Vox Machina, the Mighty Nein, Bells Hells, and official future-state recaps follow.

The campaigns have distinctly different romantic designs. Campaign 1 (Vox Machina) sets a durable partnership, Vex’ahlia and Percy, against a love story shaped by sacrifice and separation, Vax’ildan and Keyleth. Campaign 2 (the Mighty Nein) spreads romantic development across several couples: Fjord and Jester, Beau and Yasha, and Caleb and Essek. Campaign 3 (Bells Hells) concentrates its emotional and plot weight on Imogen and Laudna, while the crossover material confirms mutual feelings between Orym and Dorian.

This comparison uses canon relationships with sustained in-game development or an explicit romantic outcome. Friendships and fan ships are not counted as romances.

At a glance: how the three campaigns handle romance

Axis Campaign 1: Vox Machina Campaign 2: The Mighty Nein Campaign 3: Bells Hells
Main romantic shape Two dominant arcs: one durable partnership and one tragic separation Several parallel relationships developing alongside friendship and recovery One dominant romance plus a confirmed secondary arc
Principal couples Vex/Percy; Vax/Keyleth Fjord/Jester; Beau/Yasha; Caleb/Essek Imogen/Laudna; Orym/Dorian
Typical pacing Romance emerges inside an already-established adventuring party Slow movement from friendship, uncertainty and healing toward commitment Early emotional centrality followed by repeated crisis and reconciliation
Main obstacles Duty, mortality, sacrifice and trauma Insecurity, guilt, political danger and emotional recovery Possession, grief, identity and agency
Published endpoint Whitestone family life for Vex/Percy; Vax remains bound to the Matron of Ravens; Pike and Scanlan reconnect Wedding plans for Fjord/Jester; adoption plans for Beau/Yasha; Caleb and Essek plan a hidden future A cottage and shared adventures for Imogen/Laudna; mutual feelings for Orym/Dorian

Those differences explain why a single “best” romance is hard to name. Vox Machina is the most tragic, the Mighty Nein offers the broadest ensemble of relationships, and Bells Hells gives one couple the strongest continuous connection to the central supernatural conflict.

What counts as a canon Critical Role romance?

A canon romance here requires more than a flirtatious joke, a one-sided crush or a popular fan interpretation. The relationship must receive sustained romantic development at the table or reach an explicit romantic acknowledgment. This standard includes couples whose future is still being negotiated; it does not turn every intense friendship into a love story.

Official campaign pages establish the parties and their contexts, while Dani Carr’s Critical Recap posts record key developments and later outcomes. The C3E121 recap is a future-state account: it describes where characters are after the main campaign material rather than presenting a new sequence of adventuring episodes. That distinction matters when a recap says characters are planning a wedding or building a home; a plan is canon, but it is not proof that a ceremony has already occurred.

Campaign 1: Vox Machina’s durable partnership and tragic separation

Vox Machina begins as an already-established adventuring group. Romance therefore grows inside a mature ensemble, with existing loyalties and shared history doing much of the groundwork. The two central arcs move in opposite emotional directions: Vex’ahlia and Percy build a life together, while Vax’ildan and Keyleth are pulled apart by a supernatural duty that neither can simply set aside.

Vex’ahlia and Percival de Rolo: friction that becomes family

Vex and Percy’s attraction develops through friction, competence and shared responsibility. Their arguments are not an isolated “will they, won’t they” device; the pair repeatedly has to make practical decisions together while dealing with class, trauma and the political burden of Whitestone. That gives the romance a partnership quality early on. They are attracted to each other, but they also learn how to govern, fight and recover as a unit.

The relationship’s endpoint is unusually concrete. The official C3E121 future-state recap says that “Percival and Vex’ahlia thrive in Whitestone.” In other words, their canon future is a stable family life in the city Percy reclaimed, rather than an unresolved implication. This is Campaign 1’s clearest conventional long-term romance: conflict produces trust, and trust becomes a shared home and family.

Vax’ildan and Keyleth: love under a bargain with death

Vax and Keyleth begin with mutual attraction and grow closer as they confront the costs of leadership and responsibility. Their decisive obstacle is Vax’s bargain and continuing service to the Matron of Ravens. The relationship cannot be solved by better communication alone because mortality and divine duty are active forces in the story.

The C3E121 recap says that Keyleth learns Vax has vanished and returned to the Matron’s service. That outcome preserves the emotional bond while denying the couple an ordinary shared life. Vaxleth is therefore not a failed romance; it is a romance whose defining promise is endurance across separation. The dramatic question is what love means when one partner’s identity and obligations place him beyond a mortal future.

Pike and Scanlan: a later-life continuation

Pike and Scanlan form a secondary and more uneven thread. Their flirtation and intimacy never carry the same structural weight as the two pairings above, but the future-state material gives them a clear continuation. Scanlan visits Pike, they affirm that they still love each other, and they agree to adventure together again.

That scene is best read as a later-life renewal rather than as evidence that they were Vox Machina’s primary romance. It shows that an unconventional relationship can remain emotionally real even after the party’s original era has ended.

Campaign 2: the Mighty Nein’s network of relationships

The Mighty Nein starts with a looser social structure than Vox Machina. Characters are meeting, hiding parts of themselves and recovering from earlier damage while the group learns to function. Romance develops in parallel with friendship, so the campaign feels less like a contest between two lead couples and more like a network in which several relationships reach different kinds of commitment.

Fjord and Jester: from comic mismatch to an intended marriage

Fjord and Jester begin with comic flirtation and a mismatch in confidence. Jester’s enthusiasm and Fjord’s uncertainty make their early exchanges funny, but the arc gradually shifts toward mutual trust. Fjord has to decide what kind of person he wants to be apart from the powers and identities that once defined him; Jester has to distinguish affection from an idealized image of a hero. Their relationship becomes credible as each starts responding to the other’s actual fears and choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official C3E115 recap records that they are planning a wedding, and C3E121 shows them discussing the wedding and assigning roles in the wedding party. These are explicit future commitments. They establish an intended marriage, not a documented ceremony, so “Fjord and Jester get married” is stronger than the published evidence allows. The canon endpoint is a couple organizing a shared future with their friends involved.

Beau and Yasha: commitment built through grief and recovery

Beauregard and Yasha’s relationship grows through mutual recognition, grief and the slow process of becoming emotionally available. Neither character arrives as a simple romantic lead. Beau’s guarded intensity and Yasha’s history of loss make vulnerability difficult, and their bond advances when they choose honesty over self-protection.

The future-state recap says Beau plans to spend time at Veth’s camp with Yasha and that the two have been considering adoption. C3E115 likewise records their discussion of maintaining the relationship and adoption. Their endpoint is domestic and forward-looking: they are not merely declaring feelings, but considering how to organize a family and sustain a partnership around work, travel and community.

Caleb and Essek: intimacy under political danger

Caleb and Essek are quieter and more morally complicated. Their intimacy is inseparable from guilt, political danger and the question of whether people who have caused serious harm can build a future without pretending the harm did not happen. The relationship is therefore less publicly staged than Fjord and Jester’s, but its ethical tension gives it unusual weight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The C3E121 recap identifies Essek as Caleb’s partner. It also describes Caleb making plans with Essek while worrying that the Bright Queen could find them. That combination makes the pairing canonically significant: they have a relationship and a plan, yet secrecy and political consequences remain part of daily life. Their future is deliberately conditional rather than comfortably settled.

Friendship is not automatically romance

Jester’s friendships with Beau, Nott (later Veth) and the rest of the Nein are among Campaign 2’s emotional foundations. They should not be relabeled as romances simply because the characters are intimate, loyal or popular in fan shipping. Keeping those categories separate makes the three-campaign comparison more useful: the Mighty Nein has a large amount of affection and chosen-family storytelling, but only the pairings above receive the sustained romantic treatment used here.

Campaign 3: Bells Hells and the romance at the center of the plot

Bells Hells concentrates its romantic center on Imogen Temult and Laudna. They begin as close companions, and their relationship is tied to the campaign’s questions about trauma, identity and possession. The crossover material adds Orym and Dorian as a confirmed secondary romance, but Imogen and Laudna remain the couple whose emotional choices most directly alter the main supernatural conflict.

Imogen and Laudna: affection tested by Delilah

Official recap material records a kiss between Imogen and Laudna and Imogen’s promise that she had been thinking of Laudna constantly. A later recap records Imogen kissing Laudna again and the pair reconciling after conflict involving Delilah. Dani Carr’s wording is unambiguous: “I love Laudna and Imogen and Laudna and Imogen love each other.” The relationship is canon, mutual and repeatedly reaffirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The obstacle is not ordinary incompatibility. Laudna’s bond with Delilah creates a crisis of identity and agency. In C3E96, Imogen holds Laudna and challenges the idea that Laudna can no longer distinguish herself from Delilah. Imogen must support Laudna without excusing Delilah’s manipulation, while Laudna must reclaim responsibility for her own choices. Their romance consequently advances through ethical decisions as much as through tenderness.

The C3E121 future-state recap gives the clearest domestic endpoint of the three campaigns’ newest central romance: Imogen and Laudna build a cottage in the Taloned Heights woods, continue adventuring and vacation in the Fey Realm. The future is not presented as an end to danger or work; it is a shared home and an ongoing life that includes both.

Orym and Dorian: mutual feelings confirmed in crossover material

Orym and Dorian have less on-screen romantic development than Imogen and Laudna because their story is distributed across crossover appearances. During the crossover, Orym confesses that he has feelings for Dorian, and Dorian answers that Orym has always been the reason he is there. Those exchanges confirm mutual romantic feeling.

They belong in a canon comparison, but not as a substitute for the campaign-long centrality of Imogen and Laudna. Their arc is shorter and more dependent on crossover context, whereas Imogen and Laudna’s relationship is woven through the main Bells Hells plot.

Five useful ways to compare the arcs

1. Ensemble breadth

Vox Machina has two dominant romances with a small secondary continuation. The Mighty Nein distributes romantic attention most broadly, allowing three pairings to reach distinct forms of commitment. Bells Hells is the most concentrated: one central couple carries most of the romantic narrative, with Orym and Dorian providing a confirmed but smaller arc.

2. Pacing and starting point

Vox Machina’s established-party premise means attraction develops amid pre-existing trust and shared history. The Mighty Nein takes longer to convert friendship, insecurity and healing into explicit commitment. Bells Hells establishes Imogen and Laudna’s emotional importance early, then tests it through repeated crises and reconciliations.

3. Integration with the main plot

Every campaign connects romance to adventure, but the mechanism differs. Vex and Percy’s relationship is bound to Whitestone’s political and family future; Vax and Keyleth’s is bound to divine duty. Mighty Nein romances grow alongside recovery, identity and geopolitics. Imogen and Laudna’s relationship directly intersects with Delilah’s supernatural influence, making their personal decisions part of the central threat.

4. Type of obstacle

Campaign 1 emphasizes mortality, sacrifice and obligations that cannot be negotiated away. Campaign 2 emphasizes internal recovery, guilt and the risks of choosing a future after serious mistakes. Campaign 3 emphasizes possession, grief, identity and agency: the characters must determine who is making a choice before they can decide what that choice means for the relationship.

5. Endpoint

The published futures also differ. Vex and Percy reach family life in Whitestone, while Vax remains separated through service to the Matron. Fjord and Jester are planning a wedding; Beau and Yasha are considering adoption; Caleb and Essek are planning a hidden life under political risk. Imogen and Laudna share a cottage and continued adventures, while Orym and Dorian are confirmed as mutually interested without an equivalent domestic epilogue.

Which campaign has the best romance?

There is no objective winner, but the evidence supports a practical choice based on what you value:

  • Choose Vox Machina if you want the sharpest contrast between a lasting partnership and a devastating separation. Its romances are tightly connected to legacy, duty and the cost of heroism.
  • Choose the Mighty Nein if you prefer several couples with different emotional textures. You get a planned marriage, a partnership considering adoption and a clandestine relationship shaped by guilt and politics.
  • Choose Bells Hells if you want one romance to remain central to the campaign’s supernatural mystery. Imogen and Laudna’s love is repeatedly tested by Delilah, while Orym and Dorian add a shorter mutual-feelings arc.

These are differences in structure rather than quality. A reader who prefers domestic follow-through may favor Vex/Percy, Fjord/Jester or Imogen/Laudna; a reader drawn to sacrifice may respond more strongly to Vax/Keyleth; and a reader interested in morally complicated futures may find Caleb/Essek the most distinctive.

Canon questions readers commonly ask

What happened to Vax and Keyleth?

Vax’s service to the Matron of Ravens separates him from Keyleth. The official future-state recap says Keyleth learns that he has vanished and returned to the Matron’s service. Their love endures emotionally, but the published future does not give them an ordinary shared life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Fjord and Jester get married?

The canon material confirms that they are planning a wedding and discussing its wedding-party roles. It does not document the ceremony itself, so the precise claim is that they are an engaged or intended-marriage couple in the published future state.

Are Beau and Yasha together?

Yes. The future-state material presents them as partners discussing how to maintain the relationship and considering adoption. Their story is a committed partnership shaped by grief and recovery.

Are Imogen and Laudna a couple?

Yes. They kiss, reconcile after the Delilah-related conflict, explicitly love each other and later build a cottage together. Their relationship is the central canon romance of Bells Hells.

How are Vex/Percy and Vax/Keyleth different?

Vex and Percy’s arc resolves into shared family life in Whitestone. Vax and Keyleth’s arc is defined by love constrained by mortality, divine service and separation. One is primarily a partnership that can settle into domestic continuity; the other is a tragedy about remaining connected when a normal future is impossible.
