Yes—Cricket Wireless uses VoLTE. Cricket calls the customer-facing service HD Voice; the underlying technology is Voice over LTE, which carries calls across Cricket’s 4G LTE network. However, a phone merely advertising VoLTE is not automatically eligible. Cricket requires an unlocked, HD Voice-capable device that its network accepts, and its IMEI checker is the authoritative way to verify a specific phone.
What “Does Cricket use VoLTE?” means
Cricket’s answer is yes. On its HD Voice support page, Cricket explains that audio is sent over its 4G LTE network using “VoLTE (Voice over LTE)” technology. In other words, HD Voice is the name customers see, while VoLTE describes how the call travels through the network. The two terms refer to the same Cricket calling service from different perspectives.
This distinction matters when you read a phone’s specifications or Cricket’s support pages. A handset may list “VoLTE,” “4G Calling,” or “HD Voice” in its settings, but Cricket still has to approve that exact device for its network. General VoLTE support is a necessary clue, not a complete compatibility decision.
Cricket’s official terminology appears in three places: its HD Voice explanation, its BYOD Compatibility guidance, and its list of HD Voice-capable phones. Those pages describe Cricket’s own requirements; they do not constitute an independent test of every handset or every call.

Why VoLTE became mandatory after Cricket’s 3G retirement
Cricket says it retired its 3G service in February 2022. Its 3G Network Shutdown notice explains that customers need a compatible HD Voice device after that change. The practical consequence is that a phone designed to place voice calls over an older 3G network can no longer be treated as a safe Cricket device simply because it has a working SIM or can connect to LTE for data.
VoLTE keeps voice on the LTE network. A compatible phone must be able to register for Cricket’s voice service, use the carrier-approved LTE bands and configuration, and complete the required network authentication. Cricket therefore combines two tests: the phone must be HD Voice capable, and it must be compatible with Cricket’s HD Voice network.
The retirement does not mean every LTE or 5G phone will work automatically. Carrier certification, regional support, firmware, SIM status, and the phone’s IMEI can affect eligibility. Cricket’s compatibility system is designed to evaluate the individual device rather than rely only on a model name or a seller’s generic “unlocked” description.

VoLTE capability is the foundation, but Cricket describes HD Voice as conditional. According to Cricket’s support information, both people on the call need Cricket HD Voice-capable smartphones, and the call must be made and received over Cricket 4G LTE. If the other party uses a non-compatible device or a different call path, the conversation may complete without Cricket’s HD Voice treatment.
Cricket also warns that network congestion can prevent an HD Voice connection. LTE coverage itself is not identical to total network coverage, so a phone can show an LTE indicator in one place and still lack the conditions needed for an HD Voice call. Buildings, terrain, local network load, and the other caller’s connection can all affect the result.
Cricket describes three potential HD Voice benefits:
- Clearer voice audio.
- Reduced background noise.
- The ability to stream at LTE speeds while a call is in progress.
These are Cricket’s stated benefits, not independently measured performance guarantees. Actual results depend on both endpoints and current network conditions.

What Cricket requires from your phone
HD Voice capability
The phone must support the HD Voice service Cricket uses for LTE calling. A device’s settings may show a VoLTE switch, but that switch alone does not prove the handset has every radio band, software profile, or certification Cricket requires.
Rank #2
Cricket network compatibility
Cricket must accept the phone on its HD Voice network. This is why two phones with similar specifications can receive different results. Imported variants, carrier-branded models, and phones with region-specific firmware deserve particular caution because the model name may hide a different hardware or software configuration.
Unlocked status for BYOD phones
Cricket says a bring-your-own-device phone must be unlocked. “Unlocked” means the previous carrier does not block activation with another carrier; it does not mean the phone is automatically compatible with Cricket’s LTE voice service.
An eligible rate plan
Cricket also requires activation on an eligible rate plan for a BYOD device. Plan features and eligibility can change, so check Cricket’s current phone-plan information during activation rather than relying on an old plan description.
How to check a phone before you buy or activate it
Use this process for a used phone, an unlocked retail handset, or a device you already own. It prevents the most common mistake: assuming that a phone’s marketing label is the same as Cricket’s approval.
- Find the phone’s IMEI. On most phones, open the dialer and enter
*#06#, or look in the device’s About or About Phone screen. If a dual-SIM handset displays more than one IMEI, note the IMEI for the line you intend to use. - Open Cricket’s BYOD compatibility checker. Enter the exact IMEI in Cricket’s current compatibility tool. Cricket says its online BYOD device list is only partial and identifies the IMEI checker as the most accurate compatibility check.
- Confirm the result for the exact device. Do not substitute a similar model, a different storage tier, or a phone from another region. An IMEI result is tied to the particular handset and its recorded configuration.
- Verify that the phone is unlocked. Ask the prior carrier or seller to confirm the unlock status before payment or activation. A phone can pass a technical compatibility check and still fail activation if it remains carrier-locked.
- Check the required software version. If Cricket’s result specifies a software requirement, update the phone before moving service. Keep the manufacturer’s normal update process intact; do not assume that installing unofficial firmware will add support.
- Confirm the rate plan and desired features. Make sure the line is eligible for the device and separately verify features such as Wi-Fi Calling or 5G. Cricket’s BYOD information lists some feature support separately, so VoLTE approval should not be used to infer those features.
- Activate or move the SIM only after approval. Save the compatibility result and activation details. If the phone is rejected, stop before transferring service and resolve the eligibility issue with Cricket or the seller.
How to compare two possible Cricket BYOD phones
When two handsets both claim LTE calling, compare them in this order. The first two checks determine whether either device can be used; the remaining checks help you choose between devices that pass.
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exact IMEI approval | Cricket’s current BYOD checker accepts the phone’s IMEI | Cricket calls this the most accurate compatibility check |
| Unlocked status | The previous carrier has removed its activation lock | Cricket requires an unlocked phone for BYOD activation |
| HD Voice/VoLTE | The handset supports HD Voice and VoLTE in its Cricket-approved configuration | Voice service after the 3G retirement depends on compatible LTE calling |
| Software requirement | The phone meets any version Cricket specifies | Compatibility can depend on the installed software profile |
| Additional features | Verify Wi-Fi Calling, 5G, and other features separately | VoLTE approval does not establish support for those features |
Cricket’s supported-phone page can help identify devices it sells or has documented, but Cricket says the BYOD list is not complete. Treat that page as a reference and the live IMEI result as the deciding check, especially when buying second-hand.
Why moving a SIM does not solve incompatibility
A SIM identifies your line; it does not upgrade the phone’s radios, firmware, or network certification. Cricket advises moving a SIM only to a device that is both HD Voice capable and compatible with its network. Putting the SIM into an ineligible handset can interrupt service, even if the phone previously worked with another carrier or still displays signal bars.

If service stops after a SIM move, return the SIM to the previously working device if possible, restart both phones, and run the replacement phone’s IMEI through Cricket’s checker. Do not repeatedly swap the SIM between unverified phones while troubleshooting; each change can create a different activation state and make the original problem harder to identify.

Common misconceptions about Cricket VoLTE
“The phone has a VoLTE setting, so it must work.”
No. The setting shows that the hardware or software can support VoLTE in some configuration. Cricket still requires HD Voice capability, network compatibility, an unlocked BYOD device, and an eligible plan. The IMEI check resolves the carrier-specific question.
“A 5G phone automatically has Cricket HD Voice.”
Not necessarily. 5G branding describes another radio capability, while HD Voice is Cricket’s LTE voice service. Verify the exact IMEI and then check 5G support separately if it matters to you.
“The phone appeared on an old compatibility list.”
That is not a permanent guarantee. Cricket says its BYOD list is partial, and device eligibility, software requirements, and network policies can change. Use the current checker immediately before activation.

“Any LTE coverage means an HD Voice call will be available.”
No. Cricket distinguishes LTE coverage from total network coverage and notes that congestion can prevent an HD Voice connection. The other caller’s phone and network path also matter.
Troubleshooting a Cricket phone that will not make LTE calls
Calls fail immediately or the phone shows no voice service
- Confirm the phone’s IMEI is accepted by Cricket’s current checker.
- Verify that the handset is unlocked if it is a BYOD device.
- Install any software update Cricket requires, then restart the phone.
- Check that the line is active on an eligible rate plan.
- Make sure the SIM is in the device whose IMEI was checked, particularly on dual-SIM phones.
Calls connect but are not HD Voice
- Check whether the other caller also uses a Cricket HD Voice-capable smartphone.
- Try again in a location with stronger Cricket LTE service and less congestion.
- Confirm that the call is not falling back to a different network path.
If those checks do not resolve the issue, contact Cricket with the phone’s IMEI, model, software version, and activation details. Those identifiers let support distinguish a device-eligibility problem from a local coverage or account problem.
What to expect when buying a “Cricket-compatible VoLTE phone”
The phrase is useful only when it is treated as a checklist, not a guarantee. Before purchasing, ask for the exact IMEI and run it through Cricket’s checker. For a sealed phone, confirm the seller’s return policy because the IMEI may not be available until the package is opened. For a used phone, check that the IMEI is not reported lost or blocked and that the seller has removed any account lock; those safeguards are separate from Cricket’s VoLTE approval.
Do not pay a premium solely for the words “5G,” “LTE,” or “VoLTE” in a listing. A less expensive model that Cricket approves for HD Voice may be a safer choice than a newer imported model whose IMEI is rejected. Decide separately whether you need Wi-Fi Calling, 5G, eSIM, dual-SIM operation, or other features, and verify each one with Cricket and the phone manufacturer.

Cricket’s support pages reviewed for this article were accessed on October 13, 2026, and the key pages did not show publication dates. Network policies, supported software, plans, and device eligibility can change without changing a phone’s retail name. For that reason, the durable answer is that Cricket uses VoLTE for HD Voice, while the answer for a particular handset must come from the current IMEI check and activation requirements.
Bottom line
Cricket Wireless does use VoLTE, marketed as HD Voice, for voice calls over its 4G LTE network. Since Cricket retired 3G in February 2022, a usable phone must support HD Voice and be accepted by Cricket’s network. For BYOD, confirm the exact IMEI, unlocked status, software requirements, and eligible rate plan before moving a SIM. Treat Wi-Fi Calling, 5G, and HD Voice quality as separate questions, and remember that both callers and current LTE conditions affect whether a call receives HD Voice.
