Yes. Creo and SOLIDWORKS are both professional parametric 3D CAD systems for designing parts and assemblies and producing engineering documentation. The clearest documented distinction is that PTC presents Creo as combining parametric design with direct or flexible geometry editing, while SOLIDWORKS product materials emphasize parametric modeling, parts, assemblies, manufacturing documentation, and CAD-data interoperability. Neither distinction establishes that a capability is exclusive to one product. The right choice depends on your workflow, files, release, package, and license.
How similar are Creo and SOLIDWORKS?
Both are used in mechanical and product design workflows that include 3D parts, assemblies, and engineering documentation. PTC describes Creo as supporting parametric design, assembly design, and drawings; SOLIDWORKS materials describe parametric 3D CAD, part and assembly modeling, and manufacturing documentation. That is substantial overlap in their core purpose.
That shared purpose does not mean the products behave identically, or that a model, workflow, or license transfers seamlessly. Compare the actual tasks your team performs rather than relying on a broad claim that one system is simply better.

Creo: parametric design plus direct editing
PTC describes Creo as combining parametric modeling with direct or flexible modeling and geometry editing. That can matter when you need to change imported or existing geometry without relying solely on the original feature history. The specific tools available depend on the Creo release, package, and extensions; PTC lists capabilities across different product and package materials, so do not assume every installation includes every advertised feature. See PTC’s Creo capabilities overview and Creo Design Essentials.

SOLIDWORKS: parametric modeling and production documentation
SOLIDWORKS product materials foreground parametric modeling, part and assembly design, manufacturing documentation, and CAD interoperability. That is a difference in documented emphasis, not evidence that SOLIDWORKS lacks direct-editing tools or that Creo lacks capabilities beyond the ones highlighted in its overview. Features and entitlements vary by release and product tier. Refer to the SOLIDWORKS product materials and the applicable product matrix.
Can Creo open SOLIDWORKS files?
Yes, with conditions. PTC’s Creo Parametric release 13 help says Creo can open SOLIDWORKS parts and assemblies and include them in Creo assemblies. It also documents exporting Creo parts and assemblies to SOLIDWORKS with a Creo Solidworks Collaboration license. PTC describes exchange of product structures, boundary-representation geometry, and some non-geometric information. These capabilities do not establish that every parametric feature tree, constraint, or downstream behavior will remain fully editable or identical after translation. Check the exact release, file type, and license requirements in PTC’s help on interface capabilities and opening non-Creo models for multi-CAD assemblies.

SOLIDWORKS materials also describe CAD interoperability, but the available information does not establish every reciprocal translation behavior for every version. If exchanging files is central to your work, test both directions with the actual files and versions you expect to use rather than assuming compatibility is symmetrical.
What should you compare before choosing?
- Modeling workflow: Decide whether your work relies mainly on parametric feature history, direct editing of imported geometry, or a mix.
- Files and exchange direction: Identify the source and destination system, file types, and which model information must remain usable after transfer. Confirm any required collaboration license.
- Real assemblies and drawings: Try representative projects from your own work, including the assembly complexity and documentation your team handles.
- Package and extensions: Match the capabilities you need to the exact license, package, and add-ons being considered. PTC’s Creo packages overview describes package and deployment options; confirm entitlements with the applicable product documentation.
- Deployment and workstation: Compare supported operating systems and hardware for the exact release, not just the product name.
- Adoption cost: Include training, data migration, and the effort of adapting established team workflows.
Check system requirements by release
Requirements are version-specific. For SOLIDWORKS 2025 client products, the official requirements page lists 64-bit Windows 11 and 16 GB RAM, with 32 GB recommended. It also addresses certified graphics cards and drivers and recommends SSD drives for optimal performance. Treat those figures as applying to the 2025 client products, not as timeless requirements for every SOLIDWORKS edition or release. Check the official SOLIDWORKS system requirements for the release you plan to run; its newer-version entries may differ.

For Creo, check system compatibility against the specific release, package, and extensions in your planned deployment. PTC offers on-premise subscription and SaaS (Creo+) options, so include deployment model and licensing in the comparison rather than assuming all Creo installations are configured alike.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to make the decision
- Choose representative work: Gather a typical part, an assembly, a drawing, and any important files you exchange with other CAD users.
- Confirm the exact setup: Identify the releases, packages, extensions, collaboration licenses, deployment options, and workstation requirements for each workflow.
- Run a time-boxed pilot: Complete the same representative tasks in the candidate setup, including any required imports and exports. Check geometry, assembly structure, documentation, and what remains editable after exchange.
- Evaluate the team impact: Include training and migration effort alongside whether the workflow meets your engineering needs.
There is no supported universal winner or comparative performance benchmark here. A pilot using your own representative work is more useful than choosing on a broad feature claim alone.
