A clear credit dashboard answers four questions beside the score: what score or credit data is shown, where it came from, when it was updated, and what the user can inspect next. Treat a credit score as an estimate produced by a particular model from particular credit-report information—not as a universal measure with one fixed recipe. Keep the first view simple, and make supporting details easy to reach.
What is a credit score?
A credit score is a number calculated from information in a credit report. It can help summarize credit risk, but it is not a single, universal measurement. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains: “Each credit score depends on the data used to calculate it, and it may differ depending on the scoring model (which itself may depend on the type of loan product the score will be used for), the source of the data used, and even the day when it was calculated.” The CFPB’s “What is a credit score?” page was last reviewed September 2, 2026. Read the CFPB’s explanation of credit scores.
That variability should shape the dashboard’s first screen. Display the score provider or model, the reporting source or credit bureau when available, and an “as of” date close to the score. Do not imply that the displayed number is necessarily the score a lender will use; lenders may use different models, data sources, or calculation dates.

Separate the score from the report data
Users need to tell whether a change is in the score, in the underlying credit-report information, or in both. Label those items separately and let people inspect the report data behind an explanation where the product has it. If the dashboard cannot establish why a score moved, say what changed in the available data without presenting it as a proven cause.

What factors impact my credit score?
Present common factors as context, not as a guaranteed explanation for every score or score movement. Credit-score factors can include payment history, unpaid debt, the types and ages of accounts, use of available credit, new credit applications, and serious events such as collections, foreclosure, or bankruptcy. Which factors matter, and how they are treated, depends on the scoring model and the data used.
Use everyday language and explain the limits
Put a short explanation beside each factor. For example, if the interface uses “credit utilization,” define it there as how much of a person’s available credit is being used. Explain what the dashboard’s information can establish and what it cannot. Avoid promising a specific point increase from an action unless that result is supported by valid, product-specific evidence.

One dated illustration should not be presented as a universal formula: a CFPB webinar slide deck published in 2021 gives this FICO-based example: payment history 35%, amounts owed 30%, length of credit history 15%, types of credit 10%, and new credit 10%. Label it explicitly as an example based on FICO, not as the weights for every score. See the CFPB’s 2021 credit webinar slides.

Choose a visual based on the reader’s task: a chart can make a pattern or comparison visible, while a table is often clearer when exact values, units, or detailed comparisons matter. Avoid adding a visualization just to decorate the score. CFPB guidance recommends audience-aware charts with clear labels, supporting text, and accessible data presentation. Review the CFPB data visualization guidelines and its guidance on tables.

| Reader task | Useful format | What to make clear |
|---|---|---|
| See how a score or reported value changes over time | Line chart | Time period, dates, value scale, and the data source |
| Compare categories | Bar chart | Category names, units, and what each bar represents |
| Inspect precise values or detailed comparisons | Table | Descriptive headers, units, and clearly identified rows |
Keep a chart focused on one clear takeaway. Where practical, limit it to five data types or fewer; split denser information into smaller views instead of compressing everything into one graphic. Follow a complex chart with prose that explains the point in words.
Make charts usable without color or vision
Give each chart a descriptive title, labeled axes, and short alternative text that names the chart, its data, and its main takeaway. Do not rely on color alone: use accessible color choices and patterns, and provide equivalent text so readers can understand the information without seeing the graphic. Where applicable, offer the underlying data in a clearly named downloadable file and attribute its source. These practices follow the CFPB’s data visualization guidance.

How should the dashboard organize its information?
Let users move from score summary to explanation and then to details without losing context. Keep the score’s model, source, and update date visible near the number; place factor explanations close to the information they describe; and make detailed report information available without crowding the first view. Use predictable labels and navigation so readers can understand what a control will show before they select it.
- Identify the score. Name its provider or model and the source or bureau when available.
- Show freshness. Put the update or calculation date beside the score or data it applies to.
- Explain what may matter. Present relevant factor categories in plain language, with a nearby definition for unfamiliar terms.
- Offer a useful next inspection. Link from an explanation to the underlying report detail or a clearly labeled trend or comparison, when available.
- Check comprehension and access. Confirm that users can follow the same information with assistive technology and without relying on color or unexplained abbreviations.
Plain language is part of the interface, not an extra layer of help. The CFPB Design System says: “Write text to an eighth-grade comprehension level, excluding proper names and titles, where possible.” Spell out abbreviations at first use or ensure assistive technology can expose their definitions. See the CFPB accessibility principles.

How can teams tell whether the design is understandable?
There is no established dashboard layout that is proven best for every audience. Validate the design with the people it is intended to serve rather than treating any one arrangement as a guaranteed winner. Check whether a reader can answer these questions from the interface:
- What score or credit data am I looking at?
- Which model or source produced it, and when was it updated?
- What factors may help explain it, and what does the dashboard not establish?
- How can I inspect the relevant report detail or understand a trend?
- Can I understand the information without relying on color, unexplained terms, or a visual alone?
These checks reflect CFPB design principles that emphasize transparent, consumer-centered experiences, user control, and accessible presentation. Read the CFPB Design System general principles.
