Creative production and app marketing work best as one measurement-led system. Production supplies the videos, images, copy and variations that campaigns can deliver. Marketing objectives, audience selection, distribution, testing and measurement determine which concepts deserve another iteration. More assets or more polished assets do not automatically create growth; the useful combination is a repeatable loop that connects every creative decision to an outcome such as an install, a registration or a valuable post-install action.
What the combination actually does
Creative is the message a prospective user sees, while app marketing is the process of putting that message in front of a suitable audience and learning what happens afterward. A production team may create several concepts, but a campaign platform decides where they appear, which users are eligible, and how delivery is optimized. Measurement then shows whether the response matched the business goal.
This distinction matters because an install is only an intermediate event for many apps. A creative can generate inexpensive installs while attracting users who never complete onboarding, subscribe, make a purchase or return. Conversely, an asset with a higher install cost may bring users who complete valuable actions. The production plan therefore has to reflect the outcome the campaign is trying to change, not merely the number of files delivered.

Google Ads separates objectives such as app installs, specific in-app actions and pre-registration, and recommends choosing the goal before configuring an App campaign. TikTok’s mobile-app guidance likewise distinguishes promotion designed to drive installs from promotion intended to encourage actions after installation. Treat these as planning choices, not interchangeable labels.
#1 Best Overall
Install acquisition
An install objective is appropriate when the immediate constraint is getting the app onto more devices. The brief should make the app’s value understandable before the store visit and define an install conversion event consistently. The primary measures are install volume, install conversion rate and cost per install, with downstream quality checks added so low-cost volume is not mistaken for success.
Post-install action
For a purchase, subscription, level completion, booking or another event, optimize toward that event when the platform and tracking setup support it. Creative should show or explain the action users are expected to take, while the measurement plan records both the install and the later event. Google’s campaign guidance recommends supplying conversion data and enough budget for its systems to learn; that is platform guidance rather than a universal budget rule.
Pre-registration and re-engagement
Pre-registration campaigns need a different promise and call to action from an install campaign because the app may not yet be available. Re-engagement creative addresses people who already installed the app, so the message can refer to a feature, offer or unfinished action that would be meaningless to a new prospect. Keep these audiences and objectives separate when evaluating results.
Turn the objective into a production brief
Specify the audience and user problem
Describe who should respond, what situation they are in and what objection prevents the desired action. Include geography, language, device or operating-system constraints when they affect eligibility. A brief that says “make an engaging ad” gives a producer no testable hypothesis; a brief that says “show how a new user completes the first booking in fewer steps” can produce concepts that are comparable.
Define the single message and proof
State the promise, the evidence that supports it and the action the viewer should take. Proof may be a product demonstration, an explanation of a workflow or a clearly stated benefit. Do not imply outcomes the product cannot deliver. If several claims are important, assign them to separate concepts so a test can identify which message is responsible for a response.

Create deliberate variations
AppsFlyer’s A/B-testing guidance lists copy, images, colors, fonts and buttons as creative elements that can be varied. Produce genuinely distinct alternatives rather than many cosmetic exports. Label each asset with the concept, audience, format, version and date, and keep a record of the hypothesis it represents. This makes a winning or losing result useful to the next brief.
Match assets to the campaign and distribution environment
Google describes App campaigns as using supplied creative assets and combinations of channels. The same asset will not necessarily appear in the same context or reach the same users across inventory. Prepare files that meet each destination’s current technical and eligibility requirements, then document which versions were actually available to delivery.

Google App campaigns
Use the selected objective, provide the available text, image and video assets requested by the campaign setup, and connect the conversion event that represents success. Google’s recommendations about budget and conversion data should be treated as conditions that can affect learning in that platform, not as proof that a fixed spend guarantees performance.
TikTok app promotion
TikTok positions app advertising around both installs and actions after installation. A short demonstration, a clear first-use benefit and an explicit call to action can help the viewer understand the app quickly, but the appropriate concept depends on the audience and objective. Vendor performance claims should be treated as promotional guidance; validate the result with your own measurement.
Asset management across media sources
AppsFlyer’s Creative Management documentation describes organizing and uploading app-promotion assets to supported sources, including Google Ads, Meta Ads, TikTok Ads, Mintegral, Unity Ads and AppLovin. Integration and upload capabilities differ by destination, so confirm the current support and required fields before promising a single automated workflow. A central naming system and an export checklist prevent the wrong version from reaching a live campaign.
Design a test that answers one question
Control the variable
AppsFlyer describes splitting mobile traffic between variants and comparing campaign KPIs. Change one meaningful variable when the purpose is to learn whether that variable caused a difference: for example, a product demonstration versus a lifestyle image, or one call-to-action label versus another. Keep audience, geography, optimization event, budget conditions and timing as comparable as practical. If several conditions change at once, the result can still guide a decision, but it will not identify which change mattered.

Use a platform experiment within its documented scope
Google Ads Help describes Directional experiments as “a quick and scalable way to A/B test multiple creative assets and receive directional performance insights.” The documented feature is currently scoped to Android, video-only App campaigns for installs. Google recommends a separate test campaign, geographic exclusions to avoid overlap with the main campaign, and one variable per test. Check eligibility and current setup requirements before launch because platform features can change.
Choose the comparison unit
A single-media-source test can isolate a decision within that source, while a multi-source test may reveal whether a concept travels across environments. AppsFlyer cautions that results from one media source may apply only to users of that source. Do not pool results simply because the assets have the same name; confirm that attribution windows, optimization events and audience definitions are comparable.
Measure the outcome that matches the goal
AppsFlyer examples include install conversion rate, return on investment, average revenue per user and loyal-user rate. Google’s Directional experiments documentation maps suggested success metrics to the campaign’s bid strategy, including install or conversion measures and in-app-action measures. Select a primary metric before launch and record diagnostic metrics that explain it.
| Objective | Primary result to compare | Useful diagnostic measures |
|---|---|---|
| Installs | Install volume or cost per install | Install conversion rate and early activation |
| Specific in-app action | Conversions for the defined action | Cost per action and completion rate after install |
| Pre-registration | Completed pre-registrations | Conversion rate from eligible impressions |
| Value or retention | Return on investment, average revenue per user or loyal-user rate | Install cost and the share reaching the value event |
Define attribution windows, event names and reporting time zones before comparing variants. A result that looks better immediately may change as delayed conversions arrive. Record spend, delivery dates, audience, platform, optimization setting and any major product or store changes alongside the creative result.

Interpret results without overstating them
Directional results are evidence for a next decision, not universal proof that one creative wins everywhere. Platform tests can be restricted by operating system, format, objective, geography or campaign type. A result from an Android video-only install experiment should not be presented as a rule for iOS, static placements or post-install optimization.
External evidence also has a defined scope. AppsFlyer’s 2025 Performance Index analyzed 16.2 billion installs across 39,000 apps and 88 media sources. That is the scope of that report, not a census of the entire app market and not evidence that production volume itself caused growth. Official platform documentation explains how features work, but it is not independent causal research comparing every creative approach.
A repeatable production-and-learning workflow
- Write the decision. State whether the campaign must increase installs, a named in-app action, pre-registrations or re-engagement.
- Set the measurement contract. Define the primary event, attribution window, reporting owner and guardrail metrics before assets are made.
- Build the brief. Document audience, user problem, promise, proof, call to action, geography and platform constraints.
- Produce a small set of distinct concepts. Vary one hypothesis at a time where possible, and label every file so delivery and analysis are traceable.
- Validate delivery readiness. Check dimensions, duration, copy limits, rights, localization, tracking events and destination-specific upload requirements.
- Choose the campaign or experiment. Use a suitable platform objective; for Google Directional experiments, confirm Android, video-only install eligibility and prevent geographic overlap with the main campaign.
- Launch with stable conditions. Avoid changing targeting, optimization, budget and creative simultaneously when the purpose is causal learning.
- Wait for the planned observation period. Compare the primary metric after the agreed attribution window, while monitoring delivery and tracking failures.
- Make an iteration decision. Continue, revise, retire or expand a concept, noting which audience, source and objective produced the result.
- Feed the decision into the next brief. Preserve the learning and change only the next variable you need to understand.
Common failure modes and fixes
High install volume but weak product use
Check whether the creative promise matches the onboarding experience and whether the optimization event is only an install. Rebrief around the first valuable action, then measure completion and retention-related indicators rather than judging the asset on install cost alone.
Many variants with no clear learning
If copy, audience, placement and bid strategy all changed together, the comparison is ambiguous. Narrow the next test to one variable and keep the naming and delivery record precise.

Test and control contaminate each other
Overlapping geographies or audiences can expose users to both campaigns. Use exclusions or a mutually exclusive split where the platform supports it, and document the allocation method.
Best Value
A feature is unavailable
Eligibility may depend on operating system, format, objective or account configuration. Confirm the current platform documentation and use a controlled A/B setup in your measurement platform when the native experiment is not available.
Results do not transfer to another channel
Re-test the concept in the new media source. A response from one source may describe that source’s users and inventory, not a universal audience preference.
Governance for a sustainable creative system
Assign ownership for the brief, production, trafficking, instrumentation and analysis. Keep a versioned library containing the original file, exported variants, claims approval, localization status, destination, launch date and result. Archive retired assets instead of overwriting them; historical context helps distinguish creative fatigue from a change in audience, product or auction conditions.
