Verdict: The Creative Outlier Free+ makes the most sense when your first priority is keeping your ear canals open and hearing what is happening around you. Its adjustable bone-conduction transducers, two-device Bluetooth multipoint, IPX5 splash resistance and manufacturer-rated 10-hour battery make it practical for walks, workouts and everyday communication. It is a weaker choice if you expect full, bass-rich music: Consumer Reports describes its sound as mediocre, with subdued bass and a somewhat telephone-like presentation.

That trade-off is the central buying decision. The Free+ is not simply a conventional music headset with a different shape. It exchanges isolation and richer low-end response for environmental awareness and a non-in-ear design. The sections below explain exactly what that means, which claims are manufacturer figures, how the Free+ differs from similarly named models, and who should (and should not) buy it.

What the Creative Outlier Free+ is

The Outlier Free+ is an open-ear bone-conduction headset. Instead of placing a speaker inside the ear canal or sealing over the ear, its transducers sit against the area in front of the ears and transmit vibration through the bones of the skull. Your ear openings remain uncovered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That arrangement can suit listeners who dislike earbuds, cannot comfortably tolerate an in-ear seal, or want to hear nearby speech, traffic and other ambient sounds while listening. It does not make a situation safe by itself: you still need to pay attention, keep volume reasonable and follow local rules when walking, cycling or exercising near vehicles.

Creative says the transducers can be adjusted to adapt to the wearer’s ear contours. That is a design feature, not a guarantee that every listener will find the fit comfortable or stable. No independent comfort, fit or long-term-wear measurement was established for the Free+.

Free+ specifications at a glance

Feature What is established What it means in practice
Acoustic design Bone conduction with open ears Ear canals stay uncovered; outside sound remains audible, but music is not isolated from the environment.
Transducers Adjustable; Creative says they adapt to ear contours You can reposition the contact points, although individual comfort and stability will vary.
Wireless connection Bluetooth 5.3 Uses a current Bluetooth generation; actual range and reliability depend on the phone, surroundings and obstructions.
Multipoint Two devices The headset can remain connected to two devices, while playback or calls are handled by one connected device at a time.
Water resistance IPX5 Designed for sweat, splashes and low-pressure water jets; not a swimming or submersion rating.
Claimed playback Up to 10 hours Creative’s maximum claim, not an independent runtime measurement.
Full charge Two hours Manufacturer charging estimate under its stated conditions.
Quick charge Up to two hours of playback from 10 minutes A manufacturer claim; actual time changes with volume, codec, battery age and use.

How bone conduction changes the listening experience

Open ears are the benefit

With no earbud tip blocking the canal, you can hear a doorbell, a colleague, a running partner or approaching traffic without removing the headset. That is useful for outdoor exercise and for workplaces where awareness matters. It can also avoid the plugged-ear feeling some people experience with sealed earbuds.

Open ears are not the same as transparency mode on noise-cancelling earbuds. A transparency system uses microphones and speakers to reproduce external sound. The Free+ simply leaves the ear openings open, so environmental noise reaches you naturally. Wind, conversation and machinery can therefore compete directly with the music.

The trade-off is limited isolation and bass

Because the Free+ does not create an acoustic seal, it cannot provide the isolation of an in-ear monitor or closed-back headphone. In a loud gym, beside a busy road or on a train, outside sound can mask detail. Turning the volume up to overcome that noise defeats some of the awareness advantage and can increase listening risk.

Bone-conduction systems also tend to present music differently from air-conduction headphones. Consumer Reports characterizes the Free+ sound as mediocre for music, specifically noting subdued bass and an overall somewhat telephone-like presentation. That assessment is product-specific and is the strongest independent sound-quality evidence available for this model. It does not mean speech is unintelligible; Consumer Reports says the shortcomings do not rule the headset out for dialogue and communication.

Sound quality: what to expect for music, speech and calls

Music

Expect vocals, podcasts and midrange-focused material to be more convincing than bass-heavy tracks. Sub-bass impact, kick drums and electronic low end are the areas most likely to feel restrained. The telephone-like character described by Consumer Reports means familiar songs may sound narrower or less natural than they do through ordinary earbuds or headphones.

This is not a measured frequency-response review, so there is no defensible bass-extension number or laboratory ranking to report. The practical conclusion is qualitative: buy the Free+ for access to sound while your ears remain open, not for audiophile fidelity.

Speech and communication

Open-ear playback can be convenient for spoken content because you can hear your surroundings at the same time. Consumer Reports’ assessment specifically indicates that the sound limitations do not eliminate its usefulness for dialogue and communication. That is evidence about the character of the audio, not a measured claim about microphone quality, call loudness or noise suppression.

No independent Free+ testing established call clarity, microphone performance or wind handling. Do not assume that a positive experience with speech automatically means the headset will deliver professional-quality phone calls in a noisy street.

Volume and privacy

Open-ear audio is not private in the way a sealed earbud can be. People nearby may hear some of what you are playing, especially at high volume, and you may hear them as well. In a quiet office or shared room, use a conservative volume and consider whether your content is appropriate for an open design.

Connectivity and two-device multipoint

The Free+ uses Bluetooth 5.3 and supports multipoint pairing with up to two devices. A typical arrangement is a phone and a laptop: music can come from one while the headset remains ready for an incoming call or meeting on the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Creative states that playback or calls can be accessed from only one connected device at a time. Multipoint therefore reduces re-pairing, but it is not simultaneous two-source playback. The exact hand-off behavior depends on the operating systems and applications involved; pause audio on the active device if the second device does not take focus automatically.

Pairing procedure

  1. Charge the headset before first use so the initial pairing session is not interrupted.
  2. Open Bluetooth settings on the first phone, tablet or computer and enable Bluetooth discovery.
  3. Put the Free+ into pairing mode using its controls, then select the Free+ entry when it appears.
  4. Play a short audio clip and adjust the headset’s position and volume while checking that both ears remain unobstructed.
  5. For a second device, pause the first device’s media, place the Free+ back into pairing mode if required, and select it from the second device’s Bluetooth list.
  6. When testing multipoint, start with one device paused. Resume audio or answer a call on the device you intend to use; remember that only one device can handle playback or a call at a time.

Bluetooth 5.3 identifies the radio generation, not a guaranteed distance or uninterrupted connection. Walls, crowded wireless environments, body position and the source device all affect performance.

Battery and charging claims

Creative rates the Free+ for up to 10 hours of playback. The same manufacturer specification lists a two-hour full charge and says a 10-minute quick charge can provide up to two hours of playback. These are maximum manufacturer figures, not independent measurements of runtime.

Actual endurance varies with listening volume, Bluetooth conditions, call use, temperature, battery age and how often the headset is switched between devices. Treat the quick-charge figure as an emergency top-up rather than a schedule you can depend on every day. If you need the headset for a long outing, charge it fully beforehand and carry an alternative way to listen.

No independent Free+ evidence established real-world battery life, charging heat, battery longevity or the number of charge cycles. Those unknowns are important if you are buying for daily professional use, but they should not be filled with results from the related Outlier Free model.

IPX5: suitable for sweat and rain, not swimming

Creative describes the Free+ as IPX5, using the terms “sweatproof and splash-proof.” Its explanatory footnote narrows that claim to protection against low-pressure water jets from any direction, including light or moderate rain.

IPX5 does not certify submersion. Do not swim with the Free+, wear it in a shower, or treat a dropped unit as protected simply because it survived a splash. Salt water, chlorinated water and repeated high-pressure spray can be especially damaging. Wipe moisture away after exercise and follow the manufacturer’s charging and cleaning guidance before connecting power.

The rating is easy to confuse with the separate Outlier Free Pro+. That model is listed at IPX8, but the higher rating belongs to the Pro+ and must not be assigned to the Free+.

Free+, Free and Free Pro+: keep the model names straight

Model Details established in the available product information Do not assume
Outlier Free+ Bone-conduction, adjustable transducers, Bluetooth 5.3, two-device multipoint, IPX5, up to 10 hours claimed playback Do not attribute an 8 GB player or IPX8 protection to this model.
Outlier Free A related family model covered by a separate review Do not use that review as direct evidence for Free+ comfort, sound, battery or fit.
Outlier Free Pro+ Creative’s product information lists IPX8 and an integrated 8 GB player Those features do not establish the Free+’s water rating or storage.

Retail listings can shorten or rearrange the name, so verify the complete model designation before relying on a specification. A listing that says “Free” may not be the Free+, and a listing that says “Pro+” describes a different product with different water protection and storage.

Who should buy the Free+

Good match: awareness-first listeners

  • You want your ear canals uncovered while walking, exercising or working.
  • You dislike the pressure or occlusion of in-ear earbuds.
  • You mainly listen to podcasts, spoken content, calls or music where bass impact is not the priority.
  • You use two devices and would rather avoid repeated Bluetooth re-pairing.
  • You need protection against sweat and ordinary rain, but not immersion.

Consider another type of headphone if these are your priorities

  • Deep bass, wide musical detail and a natural full-range presentation.
  • Strong isolation on aircraft, trains or loud streets.
  • Privacy in shared offices, libraries or public spaces.
  • Swimming or regular submersion.
  • Verified call-microphone performance for noisy professional environments.

The Free+ can be a sensible compromise for someone who values awareness more than fidelity. It is not a universal replacement for earbuds, closed-back headphones and sport headphones at the same time.

How to get the best result from the hardware

Position the transducers consistently

Use the adjustable transducers to find a repeatable contact position in front of each ear. They should not obstruct the ear canal. Because individual ear contours differ, mark the position that gives you a stable signal without pressing harder than necessary. There is no independent evidence establishing a universally comfortable adjustment.

Set expectations before exercising outdoors

Start with a quiet route or low-noise environment. Confirm that you can hear approaching people and vehicles, then choose a volume that leaves room for those sounds. Open ears improve awareness but do not replace visual checks, reflective clothing, lights or safe road behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use multipoint deliberately

Keep only the two devices you actually use connected. When switching, pause media on the current source before starting the next one. If a call does not transfer, select the Free+ manually in the device’s audio output menu rather than assuming multipoint will override the active source.

Protect the charging port

After a sweaty workout or rain exposure, let the headset dry before charging. IPX5 concerns water exposure, not the safety of plugging in a wet device. Avoid pressure-washing spray, baths and all intentional submersion.

Price and availability context

A Creative UK page displayed £59.99 as a promotional price and showed stock in the search result used for this review. That was a dated regional storefront observation, not a current worldwide price or a promise that the promotion remains available. Prices, stock and included accessories can change by country and date.

If you shop through a marketplace, search for the exact phrase Creative Outlier Free+ headphones and check the photos, model name and specifications. Confirm that the box identifies Free+, not the similarly named Free or Free Pro+. Recheck the return policy because personal fit and sound preference cannot be predicted from the specification sheet.

Common pitfalls and practical fixes

“It sounds like a phone speaker.”

That reaction is consistent with Consumer Reports’ description of a somewhat telephone-like presentation and subdued bass. Repositioning may improve contact, but it cannot turn an open bone-conduction design into a bass-sealed earbud. Return or exchange it if music fidelity is your non-negotiable requirement.

“I expected it to block traffic noise.”

The Free+ is intentionally open. Environmental sound is part of the design, not a defect to be corrected with a setting. Lower the music, change location or use a different headphone category when isolation is necessary.

“The listing says waterproof.”

Check that it says IPX5 for Free+. Translate that rating as resistance to sweat, splashes and low-pressure jets, including light or moderate rain. It is not permission to swim or submerge the headset.

“The battery did not last 10 hours.”

Ten hours is an “up to” manufacturer claim. Volume, calls, wireless conditions and battery age can reduce runtime. Charge fully before a long session and use the quick-charge feature as a limited top-up rather than an independently verified guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The second device will not play.”

Multipoint supports two connected devices, but Creative says playback or calls are handled by only one device at a time. Pause the first source, select the Free+ as the second device’s audio output and then start playback. If necessary, disconnect the first device temporarily to identify which source currently owns the audio session.

Bottom-line buying decision

Choose the Creative Outlier Free+ when the defining requirement is an open ear: you want to remain aware of nearby sound, avoid inserting earbuds and accept a compromise in music quality. Its adjustable transducers, Bluetooth 5.3, two-device multipoint and IPX5 rating make the feature set practical for everyday exercise and communication, while Creative’s battery figures are useful planning estimates.

Choose a conventional sealed earbud or headphone instead when rich bass, isolation, privacy or independently verified call performance matters more than awareness. Choose the distinct Outlier Free Pro+ only if its separate IPX8 and 8 GB player specifications meet your needs; those features are not part of the Free+ evidence.
