To run Create Ultimate Selection with friends, use Minecraft: Java Edition 1.20.1, the exact Forge loader build required by the pack, and the pack’s dedicated server distribution. Every player must install the matching client release. The most reliable sequence is to download the current Create Ultimate Selection Serverpack MC 1.20.1-23.8.0 (listed September 7, 2026), install it on a self-managed machine or a host that accepts Forge server packs, then lock the client and server versions before anyone connects.
What Create Ultimate Selection is built for
Create Ultimate Selection is a Forge modpack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1. Its focus is engineering, automation and creative construction through Create-related content, with quests that give a shared progression path. Multiplayer works best when one operator maintains a single authoritative server installation and every player uses the same modpack files.

CurseForge showed 1,134,190 downloads on a 2026 page capture, which indicates broad use but does not guarantee that every release has identical mods or configuration.
A server is not interchangeable with an ordinary vanilla installation. Forge loads the mod set, the server needs the pack’s server-side files, and clients must have compatible client files. Treat the version number as part of the server identity, not as a cosmetic label.

Requirements and decisions before you install
Use the supported game and loader
- Game: Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1.
- Loader: Forge, using the build required by the selected Create Ultimate Selection release.
- Distribution: the dedicated server-pack file for that release, rather than copying a client profile into a server directory.
- Clients: every player installs the same Minecraft version, Forge build and modpack release.
The project listing alone does not specify the exact Forge build. Record the build shown in the server-pack instructions or launch files you download, and use that same build in each client profile. Do not substitute a newer Forge build merely because it also says 1.20.1; loader changes can alter dependency resolution and connection compatibility.
Choose who operates the machine
You can run the server on a computer you control or rent managed modded Minecraft server hosting. Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, backups, configuration and version changes, but you must handle networking, updates, security and uptime. Managed hosting removes much of that routine work, but you depend on the host’s import tools, panel limits, support process and pricing.
Keep an installation record
Create a small text record before inviting players. Include the pack release, Forge build, Java runtime used, server address, the date of the last backup and who has operator access. This prevents “works on my computer” troubleshooting when someone silently updates a launcher profile.
Find and verify the official server pack
Use the project’s file listing
- Open the Create Ultimate Selection project on CurseForge and go to its files/releases listing.
- Filter for Minecraft 1.20.1 and identify the dedicated server-pack entry, not only the client profile.
- For the release listed September 7, 2026, verify that the filename or title identifies Create Ultimate Selection Serverpack MC 1.20.1-23.8.0.
- Download the archive and preserve its release number in your installation notes.
- Read the archive’s included instructions before moving files or starting the server. A server pack may include launch scripts, configuration, libraries or a required installation step.
Release numbers are volatile. A later file can replace 23.8.0, and a server upgraded to a new pack release can stop accepting clients that still use the old release. Always compare the release number on the project page with the one in your local archive.
Do not mix distributions
A client export, a server pack and a generic Forge installer serve different purposes. The client export contains files a player’s launcher needs; the server pack is arranged for server-side use. If a host asks for an import file, provide the dedicated server pack or the format that host explicitly documents. Do not upload a random client profile and assume the panel will convert it correctly.

Self-hosted installation, step by step
1. Prepare a clean server directory
Make a new directory dedicated to this world. Avoid placing it inside a client’s launcher folder, and avoid reusing a directory from a different modpack. A clean directory makes it possible to roll back the world and identify which files belong to Create Ultimate Selection.
Extract the downloaded server-pack archive into that directory. Keep the original archive elsewhere as an untouched backup. If the pack includes a start script, use that script as the primary launch method; it may set Forge arguments or paths that are not obvious from the filenames.
2. Install the required Forge server files
Follow the instructions shipped with the selected server pack. If the pack directs you to run a Forge installer, the general form is shown below; replace the code-style placeholder with the exact installer filename you downloaded:
java -jar <forge-installer-file>.jar --installServerDo not guess the installer filename or Forge build. The command is a pattern, not a substitute for the release’s instructions. Run it from the server directory so generated libraries and launch files stay with the world.
3. Start once and accept the EULA
Launch the supplied script or the Forge server launcher once. The first run normally creates configuration and an EULA file, then stops. Open the generated EULA file, read the Minecraft EULA, and change the acceptance value only if you agree to its terms. Start the server again and watch the console for a completed startup message rather than immediately connecting when the process first appears.

4. Set an administrator and basic rules
Use the server console to grant operator access to the account that will maintain the world. Keep operator privileges limited: anyone with them can change the world or execute commands. Configure the world name, difficulty, allow-list and other gameplay settings in the generated server configuration before opening the address to friends.
5. Allocate resources conservatively
No universal RAM or CPU requirement is published for this pack. Resource use depends on the number of players, loaded chunks, Create contraptions and other mods in the selected release. Start with the memory limits recommended by your Forge tooling or host, then watch the console and operating-system metrics during normal play. Leave enough memory for the operating system; assigning every available gigabyte to Java can make the machine less stable.
6. Test locally before exposing the server
Connect from the same machine or local network first. Confirm that the world loads, quests open, Create machines can be placed and the server remains responsive while chunks generate. Stop the process cleanly through the console before copying the world or changing files. A clean stop reduces the chance of a damaged region file.

The project page displays a promotion for BisectHosting. Treat that callout as a lead to verify, not as a guaranteed current offer: availability, terms and tracking were not guaranteed as current. Whichever provider you consider, ask whether it accepts the exact Forge server pack, whether you can download full world backups, and how you roll back a failed update.
Modrinth-based installation routes
Modrinth App for players
Modrinth documents the Modrinth App as a client installation route. Each player should create or import the Create Ultimate Selection profile for Minecraft 1.20.1, confirm that it uses Forge, and check the displayed pack release against the server operator’s record. A launcher profile that happens to contain similar Create mods is not sufficient; the mod list and configuration must match the server release.

Modrinth Servers
Modrinth also documents Modrinth Servers for server-side use. The exact panel steps depend on the server product, but the decision rule is constant: select Minecraft 1.20.1, select Forge, and import the matching pack release using the server product’s supported format. Confirm that the panel reports a successful installation before starting the world.
mrpack-install
mrpack-install is a documented server-side route for installing a Modrinth pack archive. Use the tool’s current instructions for the command syntax and point it at the exact pack file or project release you intend to run. After installation, inspect the generated server directory and compare its release and loader information with the clients. Do not assume that a successful archive extraction proves that every required server library loaded correctly.
Docker with itzg/minecraft-server
The itzg/minecraft-server Docker image is another documented server-side option. Docker can make repeatable deployments and backups easier, but it adds container-volume, permissions and networking decisions. Mount the world and configuration on persistent storage, pin the image and pack versions deliberately, and verify that the container can write region, configuration and log files. Keep a copy of the world outside the container so replacing the container does not erase it.

Have players install the client pack before sharing the server address. Their checklist is:
- Install Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1.
- Install the same Forge build recorded by the server operator.
- Install the same Create Ultimate Selection release, including its configuration and required dependencies.
- Launch once from the profile so the launcher creates its files.
- Close the game, then compare the profile’s displayed version with the operator’s record.
The most common connection failures come from a mismatched loader, pack release or mod list. A player can have the right Minecraft version and still fail to connect if Forge differs or a mod was added, removed or updated locally. Do not troubleshoot by randomly deleting mods; first compare release numbers and restore the official client distribution.

Networking and first multiplayer session
Choose an address path
Players on the same home network can usually use the server machine’s local address. Players elsewhere need a reachable public address or a host-provided address, plus firewall and router rules that forward the server’s configured port to the machine running Forge. The exact port is whatever the server configuration and hosting panel specify; do not publish a port that is not actually open.
Protect the server
- Keep the operating system, Java runtime and server software updated within the versions supported by the pack.
- Use an allow-list when the server is private.
- Do not give operator privileges to ordinary players.
- Share the address privately and remove old access when a player leaves.
- Back up before changing Forge, the pack release or major configuration files.
Run a controlled first session
Invite one or two players first. Have them join, travel to new terrain and use the pack’s quest and Create systems while you watch the console. This exposes missing dependencies, excessive chunk-generation load and permission mistakes before a larger group arrives.
Updating the pack without losing the world
Back up before every change
Stop the server cleanly, copy the entire world directory and preserve the current server-pack archive, configuration and Forge details together. A backup that contains only region files may not be enough to reproduce the old environment if the pack changes its configuration or scripts.
Test a new release separately
Install the candidate server pack in a separate directory and copy a backup of the world into that test environment. Start it, inspect logs and join with a client using the candidate release. Check quests, Create contraptions, inventories and frequently visited bases. Never test an unverified update directly on the only copy of a shared world.
Coordinate the cutover
Tell players the maintenance window and the exact new release number. Update the server first, then distribute the same client release. Keep the previous server directory and backup until everyone has connected successfully. If the new release fails, stop it, restore the backup and return clients to the recorded version.
Troubleshooting by symptom

Operational checklist for a stable server
- Record Minecraft 1.20.1, the exact Forge build and the pack release.
- Keep the untouched server-pack archive and a copy of the launch instructions.
- Schedule world backups and periodically test that a backup can be restored.
- Review logs after every pack or Forge change.
- Use an allow-list and restrict operator privileges.
- Tell players when the server is stopping, updating or rolling back.
- Keep at least one known-good server directory until an update has survived a real multiplayer session.
Recommended path
For a small group with an available computer and someone comfortable with networking, self-host the dedicated server pack and keep disciplined backups. For a group that values uptime and does not want to maintain firewall, storage and operating-system tasks, choose a managed provider only after confirming that it imports the official Forge server pack and permits full world backups. In either case, the non-negotiable rule is version lockstep: Minecraft 1.20.1, the same Forge build and the same Create Ultimate Selection release on both sides of the connection.
