For a new Create: Stranded at Sea server, use the pack’s dedicated “Create Stranded at Sea Server Pack 3.1.0.zip” for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge. Install a 64-bit Java 21 JDK, launch the generated server script once, change eula=false to eula=true, then configure memory, networking and server.properties. Every player must use the same Minecraft version, NeoForge loader and modpack release.

This guide covers self-hosting, managed hosting, first-launch failures, client connection, backups and version upgrades—including the documented warning that worlds created before version 3.0.0 are incompatible with the 3.0.2 update.

What you need before installing

Create: Stranded at Sea is an ocean-survival modpack built around Create automation, custom recipes, quests, economy systems, exploration and multiplayer. The current main release listed by CurseForge is 3.1.0 for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge. The project also maintains a separate Minecraft 1.20.1 Fabric line, including a 1.4.2 server pack. These are different installations: do not combine their files, loaders or worlds.

CurseForge displayed 303,043 total project downloads in 2026. That number is a changing platform counter, not a server-capacity or quality guarantee, so treat it only as a snapshot.

Choose the release and loader first

  • Recommended for a new server: Create: Stranded at Sea 3.1.0, Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge.
  • Alternative: the 1.20.1 Fabric line, only when you deliberately want that older branch and download its matching Fabric server pack.
  • All clients and the server must use the identical Minecraft version, mod loader and modpack release.

Hardware and software checklist

  • A computer or virtual server that can remain online while players connect.
  • A 64-bit Java 21 JDK. NeoForged’s 1.21.1 documentation requires Java 21 and a 64-bit JVM.
  • Enough storage for the server files, generated world, logs, backups and future region growth.
  • Permission to open an inbound TCP port on your router or firewall if people outside your home network will connect.
  • The dedicated server-pack archive, not a client-only modpack export.

Check Java before doing anything else:

java -version

The output should identify Java 21 and a 64-bit runtime. If it reports Java 8, 17, a 32-bit VM or no Java command, install a 64-bit Java 21 JDK and make sure the new executable is the one on your system path.

Download the correct dedicated server pack

Use the file named “Create Stranded at Sea Server Pack 3.1.0.zip” from the pack’s files listing for the 1.21.1 NeoForge release. A client export can contain launcher metadata or client-only components and is not a substitute for a dedicated-server package.

  1. Create an empty directory dedicated to this server. A short path such as C:GamesStrandedAtSea on Windows or ~/servers/stranded-at-sea on Linux/macOS makes logs and backups easier to find.
  2. Download the server-pack ZIP and verify that its filename and release match the version you selected.
  3. Extract the archive directly into the new directory. Do not nest it several levels deep if the archive already contains the run files.
  4. Keep this directory isolated from another Minecraft server. Mixing mods, configuration files or libraries from a different release is a common cause of startup errors.

Do not edit or remove files before the first launch unless the pack’s own instructions require it. The generated scripts and bundled libraries are intended to establish the correct NeoForge server environment.

Install and start a self-hosted server

1. Run the generated script

NeoForge server installations use a generated run.sh on Linux and macOS, with a corresponding Windows run script (normally run.bat). Open a terminal or command prompt in the extracted server directory and start the script from there.

On Linux or macOS, give the shell script execute permission if your operating system removed it during extraction:

chmod +x run.sh
./run.sh

On Windows, double-click the generated batch file or run it from Command Prompt in the server directory:

run.bat

The first run may download or assemble libraries and then stop. That is expected when the EULA has not yet been accepted.

2. Accept the Minecraft EULA

Stop reading the console only after it has finished writing its initial files. Open eula.txt in the server’s run directory and change:

eula=false

to:

eula=true

Save the file and start the same generated script again. NeoForged explicitly documents that the Minecraft EULA must be accepted by editing eula.txt in the run directory. If the server still says the EULA is not accepted, check that you edited the eula.txt beside the run files, rather than a duplicate file in Downloads or another directory.

3. Set the Java heap

NeoForge uses user_jvm_args.txt for memory arguments. Open that file and set a heap appropriate to your machine. For example:

-Xms4G
-Xmx8G

This is an example starting point, not an official pack requirement. Actual needs vary with player count, view distance, loaded chunks, Create factories and the complexity of automation. Leave memory for the operating system and other services; assigning nearly all physical RAM to Java can make the host less stable. Increase the maximum gradually if the console reports sustained memory pressure, long pauses or frequent tick delays.

4. Review server.properties

After the first successful start, stop the server cleanly from its console and open server.properties. At minimum, check:

  • server-port: the TCP port that must be allowed through your firewall and router.
  • server-ip: normally leave this blank so the server binds to the host’s available interfaces.
  • motd: the name players see in their multiplayer list.
  • gamemode, difficulty and pvp: set these before inviting players if your group has a specific ruleset.
  • view-distance and simulation-distance: lower values reduce CPU and memory load; raise them only after confirming the server remains responsive.
  • online-mode: keep the standard authenticated setting unless you understand the security and account implications of changing it.

Save the file, start the script again and wait for the console to report that the server is ready for connections. The first world generation can take longer than later starts.

Make the server reachable to other players

Playing on the same home network

Give players on the same LAN the host computer’s private IPv4 address and the configured port. They should use the multiplayer address in the form 192.168.x.x:port or the equivalent private address shown by your operating system. The host’s firewall must allow Java or the selected server port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allowing internet connections

  1. Reserve or identify the host computer’s local address so a router restart does not send port forwarding to a different device.
  2. Create a router port-forwarding rule for the exact TCP port in server.properties, pointing to the host’s private address.
  3. Allow the same port through the computer’s operating-system firewall.
  4. Give remote players your public address and port. Do not publish that address in a public forum; share it with the intended players.
  5. Test from a network outside your home, such as a phone hotspot. Testing only from inside the LAN can produce a false result because some routers do not support loopback connections.

If outside players cannot connect, check the server console first. A server that is not listening, is bound to the wrong interface or stopped on an error cannot be fixed by router settings alone. Then verify the forwarding rule, firewall profile, public address and whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent inbound forwarding.

Install the matching client pack

Each player needs the Java Edition client with the same three identifiers as the server:

  • Minecraft 1.21.1
  • NeoForge for that Minecraft version
  • Create: Stranded at Sea 3.1.0

A player on the 1.20.1 Fabric branch, a different NeoForge build or a different pack release will not be a compatible client. Have everyone close the game completely after changing profiles so the launcher does not retain an older instance.

Once the server is running, open the Java multiplayer screen, choose Add Server, enter the server address and connect. The first connection can take time while the client downloads resources and the server generates spawn terrain. Keep the server console visible during this step; its log usually identifies a missing mod, rejected registry entry or authentication failure more clearly than the client’s generic disconnect screen.

Why the server stops on first launch

EULA message

This is the normal first-run stop. Edit the correct eula.txt, set eula=true, save it and run the generated script again. Do not repeatedly restart without changing the file.

Java version or architecture error

If the log says Java 21 is required, the script may be using a different Java executable than the one checked in your terminal. On systems with several Java installations, inspect the script’s environment and update the system path so it resolves to a 64-bit Java 21 JDK. A 32-bit runtime cannot provide the address space expected by a modern modpack server.

Wrong or mixed server files

Errors mentioning missing libraries, incompatible mods or loader mismatches often indicate that a client export was used, files from two releases were merged or the 1.20.1 Fabric files were mixed with the 1.21.1 NeoForge pack. Move the existing directory aside, extract a clean copy of the exact dedicated server pack and retry before changing individual mods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Insufficient memory or disk space

A crash during library loading or world generation can result from a full disk or an undersized heap. Confirm free storage, check the value in user_jvm_args.txt and review the latest log for an explicit out-of-memory message. Do not solve a host-wide memory shortage by assigning every available gigabyte to Java.

Port already in use

If the log says the address is already bound, another Minecraft instance or application is using the configured port. Stop the other process or choose an unused port in server.properties, then update the firewall and router forwarding rule to match.

Self-hosted versus managed hosting

Self-hosting gives you direct access to files, logs and the operating system, but you are responsible for Java, updates, backups, network configuration and uptime. A managed host handles much of that work through a control panel, usually in exchange for a recurring fee and limits on resources or export options.

Decision factor Self-hosted Managed server
Upfront cost Existing computer or virtual machine; no pack-specific fee is established here. Monthly charge set by the provider and plan; current prices must be checked directly.
RAM and CPU Limited by your hardware or rented VM; you choose the Java heap. Plan allocation determines available RAM and CPU, often with upgrade tiers.
Installation Download and extract the dedicated ZIP, then run the NeoForge script. Some panels advertise selecting the pack or one-click installation.
Backups You create and verify copies of the world and configuration yourself. Some plans advertise scheduled backups and restore controls; retention and restore fees vary.
Networking You handle firewall rules, port forwarding and changing public addresses. The provider supplies a reachable address; region and latency depend on its data center.
Console and files Full operating-system, console and file access. Panel access may be convenient but can restrict shell access or filesystem scope.
Upgrades You control timing and can test a copy before changing production. Support or installers may simplify upgrades, but you still need a world backup and version check.
Player limits Determined by hardware, bandwidth and your configuration. Usually defined by plan policy, resource caps or advertised slots.
Cancellation and export Your files remain on your machine. Check whether you can download the complete world, configs and modpack files before canceling.

Several providers advertise support for this exact pack. PlayNHost describes selecting it in its control panel; OuiHeberg advertises one-click installation with 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 compatibility; Kinetic Hosting advertises panel installation, monitoring, backups and support. Those are provider claims, not universal specifications. Verify current pricing, RAM, CPU limits, supported regions, player-slot rules, backup retention, upgrade procedures and affiliate terms before paying.

Back up worlds before any upgrade

Never overwrite the only copy of a world while changing the modpack. Stop the server cleanly, copy the complete world directory and retain the original server files until the upgraded copy has been tested.

  1. Announce a maintenance window and stop the server from its console.
  2. Copy the world directory, server.properties, user_jvm_args.txt, configuration folders and any scripts you customized.
  3. Label the backup with the old pack version and date.
  4. Install the target release in a separate directory or duplicate the server directory.
  5. Start the duplicate with the backup world and test login, quests, Create machines, recipes and chunk loading.
  6. Keep the untouched original until the new version has been played successfully and another backup exists.

The 3.0.2 release notes contain a specific warning: “WARNING: This update is incompatible with any pre existing worlds made before v3.0.0 of the modpack!” The same release notes list gameplay fixes, recipe changes, added Create: Bits ‘n’ Bobs content and updated dependencies. Because that warning is tied to an identified version boundary, do not assume that every 3.1.0 upgrade is safe for every older world. Read the release notes for the exact source and target versions and test a copy first.

Keeping a busy Create server stable

Control loaded work

Create contraptions, farms and always-loaded chunks can increase server tick time even when only a few people are online. Start with conservative view and simulation distances, then raise them one setting at a time while watching the console and player experience.

Separate automation from exploration

Ask players to spread exploration over planned sessions rather than generating many new regions at once. New terrain generation, large moving contraptions and extensive storage networks can produce short CPU and memory spikes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use clean shutdowns

Stop through the server console instead of killing the process or closing the terminal window. A clean shutdown lets the game flush chunks and player data, reducing the chance of a damaged world after a crash or power loss.

Monitor the basics

  • Free disk space, especially after several world backups.
  • Java heap use and garbage-collection pauses.
  • Server tick responsiveness while players use large Create builds.
  • Log growth and repeated warnings after adding players or changing versions.

A practical launch checklist

  1. Select either 3.1.0/1.21.1/NeoForge or the separate 1.20.1/Fabric branch.
  2. Install and verify a 64-bit Java 21 JDK.
  3. Extract the matching dedicated server-pack ZIP into a clean directory.
  4. Run the generated script once so it creates the EULA and configuration files.
  5. Set eula=true in the correct eula.txt.
  6. Set a conservative heap in user_jvm_args.txt and leave RAM for the host system.
  7. Review server.properties, especially the port and distance settings.
  8. Configure firewall and router forwarding if remote players are connecting.
  9. Install the identical client version, loader and pack release for every player.
  10. Create and test a backup before installing any later pack release.

Following that sequence gives you a reproducible installation and makes failures easier to isolate: Java problems appear before NeoForge loading, EULA problems appear before world creation, and networking problems can be tested only after the console confirms that the server is running.
