To run a Create Chronicles: The Endventure server, use the modpack’s matching server archive for Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge 1.21.1, run it with Java 21, and plan for at least 8GB of RAM and a CPU rated at 3.5GHz or faster. Those figures come from the official Create Chronicles setup documentation; they are stated requirements, not independent performance benchmarks.

The current CurseForge listing identifies server archive version 2.0.0 for Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge, uploaded May 20, 2026. Every player’s client must use the same modpack version, Minecraft version and NeoForge loader as the server. You can host the files on your own computer for maximum control and no recurring hosting bill, or use managed Minecraft hosting for one-click deployment, backups and monitoring.

What you need before installing

The Endventure is a NeoForge modpack, so a normal vanilla server or a Forge server is not an alternative installation. The server and every connecting client must agree on all three version layers:

  • Modpack: Use the same Create Chronicles: The Endventure release on the server and clients. The listed 2.0.0 server archive is for the current 1.21.1 release shown on CurseForge as uploaded May 20, 2026.
  • Minecraft: Minecraft 1.21.1.
  • Loader: NeoForge 1.21.1.

The official setup guide lists Java 21, at least 8GB of RAM and a CPU of at least 3.5GHz. Treat these as the minimum planning targets supplied by the guide, not as a guarantee of a particular player count or tick rate. World size, simulation distance, automation, chunk loading and the number of concurrent players can all change the amount of CPU and memory your instance needs.

Choose a hosting location

A local server runs on a computer you control. It gives you direct access to every file and avoids a recurring hosting charge, but that computer must remain powered on, connected to the internet and protected from unwanted access whenever friends need to join. A managed host runs the instance in a provider’s data center and normally supplies a web panel, console, backups and support. It costs money and gives you less control over the underlying machine, but removes much of the operating work.

Prepare Java 21

Install a Java 21 runtime on the machine that will run the server. Before starting the pack, verify that the shell or service account sees Java 21 rather than an older installation. On systems with several Java versions, the executable selected for the server may differ from the one selected for your desktop, so check the account that will actually launch the server. If the reported major version is not 21, correct the system’s Java selection or the host’s Java setting before troubleshooting the modpack.

Install the server locally

The official wiki describes its instructions this way: “This guide will explain how to set up an server locally, or with a server host.” The following sequence applies the local part of that guide without changing the supplied files.

1. Download the matching server archive

  1. Open the modpack’s Files page on CurseForge.
  2. Choose the server files for the exact modpack release you intend to run. Do not substitute a client profile, an older server archive or a different Minecraft release.
  3. Save the archive where you can identify it later. Keeping the original download gives you a clean recovery point if an update is interrupted.

2. Extract into a dedicated folder

Create a new, dedicated server directory and extract Server-Files.zip into it. Avoid mixing the contents with another Minecraft instance. A separate folder makes backups, updates and rollback much safer. Use a path that the account running the server can read and write; protected operating-system directories can prevent the scripts from creating configuration and world files.

3. Make the Linux script executable

On Linux, open a terminal in the extracted directory and run:

chmod +x startserver.sh

You only need this permission change when the script is not already executable. Windows users use the supplied batch file instead.

4. Perform the first launch

  1. On Windows, run startserver.bat.
  2. On Linux, run startserver.sh.
  3. Allow the first launch to continue until it finishes generating the initial files. Do not close the window or kill the process merely because the first run takes longer than later starts.

The first run creates files the server needs, including the EULA file and the initial configuration structure. A first launch that is interrupted can leave an incomplete directory and produce misleading errors on the next attempt.

5. Accept the Minecraft EULA

Stop the server after the first generation pass has completed. Open eula.txt in the server folder and change:

eula=false

to:

eula=true

Save the file, then launch the same script again. The server will not complete a normal startup while the EULA remains false. Accepting it is a prerequisite for running the software, not a modpack-specific setting.

6. Set the memory limits

The supplied files use usr_jvm_args.txt for Java memory arguments. Open that file and adjust the -Xms and -Xmx values:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • -Xms sets the heap size Java requests at startup.
  • -Xmx sets the maximum heap size the server may use.

Keep the server’s -Xmx within the RAM actually assigned to the machine or hosting plan. The guide’s baseline is at least 8GB of RAM for the server, but the operating system and other services also need memory. Allocating all physical RAM to Java can cause swapping or terminate unrelated processes. Change one setting at a time, restart cleanly and watch the console and system memory rather than repeatedly increasing the limit without evidence.

7. Confirm a clean startup

Start the script again and wait for the server to report that it is ready for connections. A successful startup should recreate the normal configuration and world directories without immediately stopping. Keep the console window available during initial testing so you can see missing-file, Java, loader or permission errors instead of hiding them behind a background process.

Connect the first player safely

Install the same Endventure client release, Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge 1.21.1 on each player’s computer. A client with a newer or older modpack build can fail during the handshake even when the server itself is healthy. Test locally first, then test from the network where your friends will play.

Local-network test

From another computer on the same home network, connect using the server computer’s local address and the configured Minecraft server port. If this works but an internet connection does not, the modpack is probably installed correctly and the remaining issue is network routing or firewall policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Internet access

For a self-hosted internet server, allow the server process through the operating system firewall and configure the router to forward the Minecraft port to the server computer. Use a fixed local address or a DHCP reservation so a reboot does not send the forwarding rule to a different device. Only expose the port you need, keep the operating system updated and avoid running the server under an administrator account when your platform allows a less-privileged service account.

Use a managed host instead

Most Minecraft hosts advertise one-click modpack installation. In a control panel, select the exact Endventure release, Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge 1.21.1, then let the panel create the instance. Before paying or uploading files, confirm that the provider supports the current server archive rather than only a similarly named pack or an older loader.

When one-click installation is unavailable

  1. Download the matching server archive and extract it locally.
  2. Stop the empty server instance in the host panel.
  3. Upload the extracted files with the provider’s FTP or SFTP service, preserving the directory structure.
  4. If the panel requires a custom JAR workflow, select the host’s documented custom-server option and follow its Java 21 and startup-command fields.
  5. Start the instance once, allow file generation, stop it, set eula=true in eula.txt, configure usr_jvm_args.txt, and start again.

Host panels differ in where they expose files, Java versions and memory limits. Do not assume that a button labelled “Forge” selects NeoForge, or that a generic “latest” option matches 1.21.1. Ask support to confirm the loader and pack version in writing when the panel’s labels are ambiguous.

What to check in a hosting plan

  • RAM and CPU: Verify that the plan can allocate at least the guide’s 8GB RAM target and has sufficient CPU capacity. Some providers quote a shared CPU allocation rather than a dedicated frequency, so ask how the advertised CPU figure is measured.
  • Storage: Confirm that the allowance covers the world, backups, logs and future modpack files.
  • Backups: Check how many copies are retained, how often they run, where they are stored and whether restoring a single world is possible.
  • File and console access: You need a way to edit eula.txt, usr_jvm_args.txt and configuration files, plus a live console for startup errors.
  • Updates: Determine whether one-click updates replace only mods or also configuration and scripts, and whether you can make a manual backup first.
  • Monitoring: Crash detection and automatic restart can reduce downtime, but verify whether repeated crashes trigger a loop or a support ticket.
  • Network protection: Ask what DDoS protection covers, which regions it applies to and whether it changes the price.
  • Geography and support: A nearby data center can reduce latency. Confirm support hours and whether staff will troubleshoot a NeoForge modpack rather than only the panel.
  • Billing: Check recurring price, setup fees, renewal rates, cancellation terms and resource upgrades before deployment.

Update the server without losing the world

Never update a running instance. A safe update has three distinct phases: shutdown, backup and replacement.

  1. Tell players to leave and stop the server completely. Confirm that the process has exited rather than merely closing a console window.
  2. Make a dated copy of the entire world directory and, if possible, the complete server folder. Keep at least one copy outside the live instance or on a different storage system.
  3. Download the new matching server archive and verify that it targets the Minecraft and NeoForge versions you intend to run.
  4. After the backup succeeds, replace the config/, defaultconfigs/, kubejs/ and mods/ folders with the folders from the new server archive, as directed by the official guide.
  5. Do not overwrite your backed-up world until you have tested the new files. Preserve local changes you intentionally made to configuration by comparing them before replacement.
  6. Start the updated server, watch the console for migration or missing-mod errors and let it finish before players reconnect.

If the update fails, stop the process, restore the previous folders and world backup, and document which version was running. A rollback is safer than trying random combinations of old and new mods.

Troubleshoot the failures that matter most

The server exits immediately

  • Check that Java 21 is selected for the account launching the script.
  • Read the first error in the console rather than the final cascade of messages.
  • Confirm that you launched the supplied startserver.bat or startserver.sh from the extracted server directory.
  • On Linux, verify execute permission with chmod +x startserver.sh.
  • Confirm that eula.txt contains eula=true after the first generation run.

Players receive a mod or loader mismatch

Compare the client and server modpack release, Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge 1.21.1. Do not fix a mismatch by copying only one mod from a different release; use the complete matching client or server archive.

The host reports insufficient memory

Check both sides of the allocation: the hosting plan must provide at least the guide’s 8GB target, and -Xmx in usr_jvm_args.txt must not request more than the plan allows. On a local machine, leave RAM for the operating system and other applications. Increasing -Xmx cannot compensate for a CPU bottleneck or a broken mod installation.

The world rolls back or disappears after an update

Stop the server and inspect the backup made before the update. Confirm that the host’s restore point includes the world directory, not only configuration files. Restore the known-good world and previous mod folders together; mixing a new mod set with an old world backup can create a second problem.

Players can connect locally but not from the internet

Recheck the server computer’s local address, router forwarding rule and operating-system firewall. Test from a network outside the home connection. If the public address changes, update the address players use or configure a stable name through a service you control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operate the server reliably

Backups

Automated backups are useful only when they can be restored. Keep multiple dated copies, include the world and important configuration, and periodically perform a test restore to a separate directory. For hosted servers, ask whether backup storage is physically separate from the live instance and whether closed servers retain their saves.

Console and log monitoring

Keep the console accessible during the first hours after installation and after every update. Watch for repeated crashes, Java out-of-memory messages, failed chunk saves and missing-mod errors. A provider’s crash detector can restart a process, but it cannot repair incompatible files; repeated automatic restarts should trigger an investigation.

Change control

Record the modpack version, Java version, memory values and date whenever you change the server. Make one deliberate change at a time and keep the previous archive until the new release has been tested. This small log makes it possible to identify whether a failure followed a modpack update, a Java change, a memory edit or a host migration.

Player access

Give the server address and port only to intended players, use the game’s normal permission controls carefully and avoid granting administrative access casually. A managed host’s panel credentials should be protected separately from in-game operator privileges.

Local or managed hosting: a practical decision

Priority Local hosting is usually the better fit when… Managed hosting is usually the better fit when…
Control You want direct access to scripts, folders, Java and network settings. You prefer a panel with controlled file and console access.
Cost You already own a suitable always-on computer and accept the electricity and maintenance work. You prefer a predictable recurring bill instead of operating hardware.
Deployment You are comfortable extracting archives, editing files and configuring a router. You want one-click modpack installation or provider-assisted FTP/SFTP deployment.
Reliability You can supply your own monitoring, backups and recovery plan. You value advertised backups, crash detection, support and data-center connectivity.
Scaling You can upgrade or replace your hardware when the world grows. You want to change RAM tiers or run multiple instances through a provider panel.

For a small group with a technically capable owner, local hosting offers the most control and the lowest recurring cost. For players who need the server online without maintaining a machine, managed hosting reduces deployment and operational work. In either case, the non-negotiables are the same: matching 1.21.1 NeoForge files, Java 21, at least 8GB of planned RAM, a completed EULA step and a tested backup before updates.
