To host Create Chronicles: Bosses and Beyond, run the Forge server files for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Java 17, at least 8GB of memory for the documented baseline, and a processor rated at least 3.5GHz. Download the matching Server Files archive, launch the supplied script, accept the EULA, and allocate memory in usr_jvm_args.txt. A managed host can automate those file and update tasks; many providers advertise 6GB as a starting plan, but that is a provider-specific recommendation rather than the pack guide’s 8GB baseline.

What the server actually requires

Create Chronicles: Bosses and Beyond is a Forge modpack built for Minecraft 1.20.1. Every player should use the same pack release as the server. A client on a different release can have missing, changed, or incompatible mods even when Minecraft itself is on 1.20.1.

Requirement Documented guidance How to interpret it
Mod loader Forge Use the Forge server files supplied with the pack, not a vanilla or Fabric server.
Minecraft version 1.20.1 Keep the server and every client on the same pack release and Minecraft version.
Java Java 17, preferably Adoptium Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime and confirm the start script can find it.
Memory At least 8GB in the community setup guide Reserve this as the practical baseline; some hosts advertise 6GB for small groups.
Processor At least 3.5GHz Clock speed alone is not a complete performance measure, but a weak CPU can stall world generation and entity-heavy areas.

The 8GB figure is attributed to the Create Chronicles Series community wiki. Hosting pages from individual providers commonly list 6GB as a starting recommendation. These numbers describe different contexts: 8GB is the pack’s documented server baseline, while 6GB is a host’s entry recommendation for a small installation. Leave headroom whenever several people explore new terrain or an area contains many machines and entities.

Choose local self-hosting or managed hosting

Local hosting gives you direct access to every configuration file and JVM argument. It is appropriate when the host computer is available whenever friends play and you are comfortable maintaining Java, scripts, backups, and updates. Managed hosting places those jobs behind a control panel and is usually easier for a group that wants a server online without manual file handling.

Decision factor Local server Managed server
Control Full access to scripts, configuration, mods, world files, and JVM settings. Panel-based controls; file access and settings depend on the provider.
Initial effort Install Java, download and extract Server Files, set permissions where needed, accept the EULA, and tune memory. Order a plan, select the pack and version in the provider’s modpack panel, and let the service deploy it.
Updates You perform the backup and file replacement yourself. The provider may offer an installer or version selector, but you still need a world backup and should verify the selected release.
Capacity Limited by your machine’s available CPU, RAM, storage, and network connection. Compare allocated RAM, CPU quality, storage, backup policy, and expected player count; slot counts alone are not enough.
Cost No hosting subscription, but your computer must remain available and consume its own resources. Recurring price and plan terms vary; published figures can change.

For a short-lived private world, local hosting avoids a recurring bill. For a group that wants an always-available world or does not want to troubleshoot scripts, one-click Create Chronicles server hosting is the lower-effort route.

Install the server locally

1. Download the matching Server Files archive

Open the pack’s Files tab on CurseForge, select the exact release your players will install, and download its Server Files archive. Do not build a server by copying only the client’s mods folder; the supplied archive can also contain scripts, configuration, and startup files that the pack expects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Extract into a dedicated folder

Create a new, clearly named folder for the server and extract Server-Files.zip into it. Keeping the world in its own folder makes backups and rollback easier. On Linux, ensure the account running the server has read and write access to the extracted files and the directory that will contain the world.

3. Make the Linux script executable

Linux users may need to grant execute permission once:

sudo chmod +x startserver.sh

Run that command from the directory containing startserver.sh, or provide the script’s full path. Windows users do not need this permission step.

4. Start the first launch

On Windows, run startserver.bat. On Linux, run startserver.sh. The first launch creates additional files and may take longer than later starts. Let the process finish rather than closing the window while it is writing files.

5. Accept Minecraft’s EULA

After the first attempt, open eula.txt. Change:

eula=false

to:

eula=true

Save the file and restart the server if the script stopped after generating it. Accepting the EULA is required before the dedicated server can continue starting.

6. Confirm a completed startup

A successful launch reports a line in the form Dedicated server took XX seconds to load. The exact number of seconds varies with hardware and world state. Treat the message as the indication that startup completed; do not stop the process merely because the console appears idle afterward.

Set Java and memory correctly

Use Java 17

Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime, preferably an Adoptium distribution as suggested by the setup documentation. If the script reports that Java is missing or an unsupported version, check the Java installation and the executable available on the system path before changing mod files. The server and the clients can use different launchers, but the server process itself must be able to invoke Java 17.

Adjust -Xms and -Xmx

The supplied startup configuration places JVM memory arguments in usr_jvm_args.txt. -Xms controls the memory reserved when Java starts; -Xmx sets the maximum heap the server may use. Set values in a way that leaves the operating system and other applications usable. For an 8GB baseline, do not assume the machine can safely dedicate all physical RAM to the Java process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change one value at a time, restart, and observe whether the server completes startup and remains responsive while players explore. A larger heap cannot compensate for an underpowered CPU, slow storage, or a world that is generating many chunks and entities at once.

Plan RAM for your player count

There is no single memory number that fits every Create Chronicles world. Player count is only one variable; view distance, simultaneous chunk generation, automation machines, and entity load can all increase demand. DedicatedMinecraft.host publishes 6–8GB for one to five players and 10–12GB for five to 15 players, with higher needs as the world grows. Those figures are a sizing guide, not a guarantee for every hardware configuration.

Players and workload Practical starting point Planning notes
One to five players, established areas 6–8GB Some providers call 6GB their minimum; the community guide still documents 8GB as the server baseline. Choose 8GB when you can spare it.
One to five players, frequent exploration or heavy automation 8GB or more New chunk generation and machine/entity activity can create short-lived peaks.
Five to 15 players 10–12GB This range is published by DedicatedMinecraft.host and should be treated as a planning estimate.
More than 15 players or a mature, machine-dense world More than 12GB may be needed Measure the actual workload and leave CPU and memory headroom rather than relying on a slot count.

When comparing plans, ask how much RAM is dedicated, what CPU class is included, how much storage and backup capacity is provided, and whether the plan can be upgraded. A plan advertising many player slots but little memory is not automatically suitable for this pack.

Install through a managed host

Managed installation removes most archive extraction and script handling. The labels differ by provider, but the workflow is consistent: order a Minecraft server, open its modpack installer, choose CurseForge, search for Create Chronicles: Bosses and Beyond, select the intended release, and install it.

Provider workflows and published starting points

Provider Published installation or sizing claim Price information shown in the material reviewed
WinterNode Advertises one-click installation, Forge/Minecraft 1.20.1 support, and a 6GB recommendation. $11.94 per month displayed as a starting price; verify the current price, billing term, and included resources before ordering.
Crafty Servers Says the pack needs at least 6GB and installs the pinned release automatically. Not stated.
PlayNHost Documented path: order a server, open the modpack panel, choose CurseForge, search for the pack, and install the selected version. Lists 6GB as the minimum starting plan. Not stated.
DedicatedMinecraft.host Publishes 6–8GB for one to five players and 10–12GB for five to 15 players, with higher needs as the world expands. Not stated.

These are provider claims and displayed prices, not universal requirements. Confirm that the provider offers Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1, exposes the exact pack release you need, and states whether backups, storage, CPU allocation, and upgrades are included. A “one-click” installer reduces setup work but does not remove the need to verify the version before players connect.

General hosted installation sequence

  1. Order a plan with enough dedicated memory for your expected group, using 8GB as the conservative baseline for a small server.
  2. Open the host’s modpack or game installer panel.
  3. Select CurseForge as the source and search for Create Chronicles: Bosses and Beyond.
  4. Choose the same pack release that your players will install; confirm that the panel identifies Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1.
  5. Start the installation and wait for the panel to report completion before starting the server.
  6. Start the server, review its console for a completed load, and give players the connection details supplied by the host.

Keep client and server versions aligned

Version alignment is the first check when a player cannot join or receives mod-list errors. Compare the release selected in the CurseForge client with the release installed on the server. If you changed versions on one side, change the other side deliberately rather than copying random files between installations. A server update should be treated as a coordinated change for the whole group.

Update safely and preserve a rollback path

Before replacing any files

  1. Tell players to disconnect and stop the server completely. Do not replace mod files while Java is still running.
  2. Make a full copy of the world and retain the existing configuration. Label the backup with the old pack release and date.
  3. Download the new release’s Server Files archive and keep the old archive available until the new world has been tested.

Manual file replacement

For a manual update, the documented procedure is to delete or replace the config/, defaultconfigs/, kubejs/, and mods/ folders with the versions from the new Server Files archive. Replace only after the server is shut down and the rollback copy exists. Preserve the world backup and the previous configuration so you can restore the old release if the new one causes a startup failure or changes world behavior.

After the update

  1. Start the server with the new files and wait for a completed load.
  2. Join with a client on the identical pack release.
  3. Check important bases, Create machines, inventories, and automated areas before inviting the entire group back.
  4. If the server fails or the world behaves unexpectedly, stop it, restore the previous folders and world backup, and document which release was reverted.

Troubleshoot the common setup failures

The script will not run on Linux

Confirm that you are in the extracted server directory, that the file is named startserver.sh, and that it has execute permission. Run sudo chmod +x startserver.sh once if necessary. Then verify that the account has read/write access to the server folder.

The server stops immediately and asks for the EULA

Open eula.txt, change eula=false to eula=true, save it, and start the script again. If the value keeps reverting, check that the file is being edited in the same folder from which the script is running and that the account can write there.

Java is missing or the version is rejected

Install Java 17 and make sure the startup script resolves that installation. Remove ambiguity from multiple Java installations by checking which executable the script invokes. Do not solve a Java-version error by downloading a different Minecraft or Forge release; the pack remains a Forge 1.20.1 server.

The server runs out of memory or becomes sluggish

Check the values in usr_jvm_args.txt, the number of players, and whether several people are generating new chunks simultaneously. Increase the allocation only when the machine has unused physical RAM. Also consider reducing view distance and avoiding concentrated machine or entity loads; these are workload controls, not substitutes for the documented memory baseline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A player cannot join after an update

Compare the client and server pack release first. A mismatch is more likely than a missing network setting when the server was just updated. If the releases match, review the server console and use the rollback copy made before the update to restore a known-working state.

Operational checklist for a reliable world

  • Forge and Minecraft are both identified as 1.20.1 on the server and clients.
  • Java 17 is installed and available to the startup script.
  • The machine or plan provides at least the memory appropriate for the group, with headroom beyond the Java heap.
  • Linux scripts have execute permission and the server directory is writable.
  • The EULA is accepted in eula.txt.
  • The first launch reaches the “Dedicated server took XX seconds to load” message.
  • A dated world and configuration backup exists before every update.
  • Players are told which pack release to install and are not allowed to mix releases casually.
  • RAM, CPU quality, storage, backups, and expected player count were considered together when selecting a host.

Which setup should you choose?

Choose local hosting if you want complete control over files and JVM settings, already have a suitable computer, and are willing to perform Java setup, EULA acceptance, backups, and updates. Choose managed hosting if your priority is an always-available server with a panel and automated deployment. For a small group, a host’s 6GB entry plan may start the pack, but budgeting for 8GB gives more room for exploration and automation and matches the community setup baseline. As the group grows toward five to 15 players, plan around the published 10–12GB range and reassess CPU and world load rather than adding memory blindly.
