To create a character style in Adobe InDesign, select text with the formatting you want to reuse, open Window > Styles > Character Styles, and choose Create new style at the bottom of the panel. Name the style, then apply it to selected text or use it to format text as you type.
Choose the right kind of style
Character styles save character-level formatting for a selected range of text, such as its font, size, or color. Paragraph styles govern a paragraph or paragraph range and can include both character and paragraph attributes, such as alignment, indents, and spacing. Use a character style for a distinct run within a paragraph; use a paragraph style when the paragraph’s overall formatting should be reusable.
Adobe distinguishes the two by scope and attributes: “A character style is a collection of character formatting attributes that you can apply to a selected range of text, while paragraph style includes both character and paragraph formatting.” Adobe Help Center: Create and edit text styles in InDesign (updated June 2, 2026).
Create a character style from formatted text
- Select text that already has the character formatting you want to save.
- Choose Window > Styles > Character Styles to open the Character Styles panel.
- At the bottom-right of the panel, select Create new style. InDesign creates a style from the selected text’s formatting.
- Give the style a descriptive name so you can identify its purpose in the panel.
- For more control, open the Character Styles panel menu, choose Style Options, adjust the attributes in Character Style Options, and select OK.
These menu labels and steps are documented by Adobe as of its June 2, 2026 update; panel layout can change in later releases. Adobe’s create-and-edit text styles instructions provide the current documented workflow.

Apply the style to text
Open Window > Styles > Character Styles, then select the characters you want to format and choose the style in the panel. The style applies to the selected range. If you place the insertion point in text instead of selecting characters, the style affects text typed at that insertion point. Edit a style after creating it
- Open Window > Styles > Character Styles.
- Select the style you want to change and open the panel menu.
- Choose Style Options, edit the attributes in Character Style Options, and select OK.
Editing the style definition updates text that uses that style, so you can make a document-wide design change without formatting each styled run individually. Adobe’s style editing documentation covers this behavior.

Resolve unexpected formatting
If text does not look the way the character style specifies, it may have direct character formatting applied. Adobe’s formatting hierarchy places character attribute overrides above character styles, so manual formatting can take precedence. Inspect the Character Styles and Paragraph Styles panels to identify the style and any overrides, then remove or correct the override if the style’s definition should control the text. To bring styles into a document, open the Character Styles panel menu and choose Load Character Styles or Load All Text Styles. Select an InDesign or InCopy file, choose the styles in the Load Styles dialog, and resolve any same-name conflicts. Use Incoming Definition replaces the existing definition with the imported one; Auto-Rename renames the imported style. Adobe’s text styles documentation describes loading and resolving styles.

Replace a character style across a document
For a document-wide style change, use Edit > Find/Change. Set the style attributes to locate in Find Format, select the replacement character style in Change Format, then choose Find Next, Change, Change All, or Change/Find as appropriate. This is useful when you need to replace a style on matching text rather than change the definition for every run already using it. When a paragraph contains a repeated pattern—such as a run-in heading or a lead-in—nested styles can apply character styles automatically to portions of the paragraph. Rules can use delimiters such as characters, words, or sentences. Adobe recommends applying nested styles through paragraph styles when you want consistent results.
