To create a separate WordPress site in an agency-managed WordPress.com account, sign in, open the Hosting Dashboard from the WordPress icon, choose Add new site, select a creation route, choose a domain and plan, then open the new site with WP Admin. The site stays private until you launch it from Settings → Reading → Site Visibility.

This guide uses the current WordPress.com Hosting Dashboard workflow documented by WordPress.com Support. “Agency hosting” is not a single standardized control panel. If your agency uses another host, its labels and provisioning steps may differ; do not assume that a third-party panel has the WordPress.com options described here.

First decide whether you need a separate site or a Multisite network

The phrase “add another site” can describe two different architectures. Choosing the wrong one affects ownership, administration, domains, updates, and billing.

Architecture How it works Best fit Important constraint
Independent WordPress.com site You add a site from the Hosting Dashboard. It has its own design, domain, subscribers, settings, and WordPress dashboard. A client project, brand, campaign, or other site that should be managed separately. Each site needs its own WordPress.com plan. A plan is not shared automatically across sites.
WordPress Multisite network Multiple sites run inside one WordPress installation and are administered as a network. Organizations that deliberately want centralized network administration and a shared installation. It requires configuration in wp-config.php, and some hosts do not support it.

Adding an independent site through a hosting account does not create a Multisite network. WordPress.org’s “Tools Network screen” documentation specifically warns that host support should be checked before enabling Multisite. Treat that as an architecture decision, not as a shortcut for adding a normal second site.

What to prepare before you open the dashboard

  • The managing account: Sign in to the WordPress.com account that should own and administer the new site. The account that creates it becomes the site owner and administrator.
  • Client ownership instructions: Decide whether the agency, the client, or another organization will own the site and subscriptions. Site ownership and subscription ownership can be different, so record both explicitly.
  • A domain route: You can register a new domain, use a domain you already own or have connected, or start with a free WordPress.com address. Buying a domain before setup is not required.
  • A plan decision: Select the WordPress.com plan during setup. Budget and plan features are not transferable assumptions between sites; each site receives its own plan selection.
  • Launch materials: Have the homepage content, navigation labels, contact details, legal pages, images, and intended primary domain ready for review.
  • Access to email: You may need to confirm the account email and domain-related messages before launch or ownership handoff.

How to add the new site in the WordPress.com Hosting Dashboard

  1. Sign in. Use the WordPress.com account that will manage the site. Do not create the site under a temporary staff account if the client is meant to own the subscription.
  2. Open the Hosting Dashboard. Select the WordPress W icon in the upper-left corner of the WordPress.com interface.
  3. Choose Add new site. This starts a new site record; it does not add another domain to an existing site.
  4. Select the appropriate creation route. The available choices are a fresh site, AI-assisted creation, migration of an existing site, or connection through Jetpack. The differences are explained below.
  5. Select a domain. Choose a new domain, an already-owned or connected domain, or the free WordPress.com address offered during setup. You can establish the site before committing to a custom domain.
  6. Select a WordPress.com plan. The plan applies to this site. If you are creating several client sites, repeat the plan decision for each one rather than assuming the first subscription covers the account.
  7. Finish provisioning. Wait for the dashboard to create the site. The exact screens after plan and domain selection can vary by creation route.
  8. Open the site’s WordPress dashboard. Return to the Hosting Dashboard, select the new site, and choose WP Admin. This opens the site-specific WordPress administration area where you configure content, design, users, and settings.

WordPress.com Support’s “Create multiple websites,” reviewed October 5, 2026, describes each resulting site as independent, with separate designs, domains, subscribers, and settings. Use that independence when naming sites, assigning staff access, and documenting client handoffs.

Which creation route should an agency choose?

Route shown during setup Use it when What to verify afterward
Create a fresh site The project starts from a blank WordPress.com installation. Theme or site design, navigation, pages, user roles, email address, domain, and visibility.
Create with AI You want assisted generation of an initial site structure or content and will review it before publication. Every generated page, claim, image, menu item, contact detail, and accessibility setting. Treat generated material as a draft, not approved client content.
Migrate an existing site The client already has a WordPress site whose content and configuration should be moved. URL mapping, media, forms, users, redirects, theme behavior, plugins, and the final domain before launch.
Connect via Jetpack You need to connect an existing WordPress installation through Jetpack rather than create a blank site. That the intended existing site is connected, the correct account has access, and the connection does not point to a staging or obsolete installation.

Do not choose migration or Jetpack merely because the project is being handled by an agency. Those routes are for an existing installation. A new client build normally starts with a fresh site or an assisted creation route.

Choose and configure the domain correctly

New domain

Select this route when the project needs a domain that is not yet registered. The domain can be chosen during site setup, so pre-purchasing it is unnecessary. Confirm spelling, punctuation, ownership contact details, and the intended renewal owner before accepting the registration.

Domain you already own or connected

Use this route when the client already controls the domain or has connected it to the account. Verify that you are working with the correct domain and that DNS or connection instructions are being completed by the person who controls the registrar. An agency should not represent technical access as ownership.

Free WordPress.com address

This option lets you build and review the site without a custom domain. It is useful for an internal draft, client approval, or a project whose final domain has not been selected. Before publication, decide whether the free address should remain or whether a custom domain should become primary.

Set the primary address before launch

After the domain is connected, set the intended public domain as the primary address in the site’s domain settings. Check links, navigation, forms, images, and canonical URLs after the change. A recently registered or connected domain can take 24–72 hours to become fully active, according to WordPress.com Support’s “Launch your website,” reviewed September 17, 2026. During that interval, visitors may see the previous address or an activation message.

Understand plans, ownership, and agency handoff

One plan per site

A WordPress.com plan applies to one site. Creating a second independent site therefore requires a separate plan selection for that site. The account may manage multiple sites from one Hosting Dashboard, but dashboard access does not turn several subscriptions into one shared plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Creator versus client owner

The account that creates the site becomes its owner and administrator. For an agency project, decide in advance whether that account should be the client’s account, an agency-owned account, or a jointly governed account. Record who controls the login, recovery email, domain registration, billing, and subscription cancellation.

Handoff checklist

  • Confirm the client’s legal or organizational name in the site record.
  • Verify the recovery email and account email with the person who will retain access.
  • Document the site URL, primary domain, plan, renewal responsibility, and administrator list.
  • Remove temporary agency users when the contract requires it, while retaining an agreed support account if appropriate.
  • Give the client a written explanation of which account owns the site and which account pays for the subscription.

These records prevent a common agency failure: a finished site remains tied to a former employee’s account even though the client believes it owns the project.

Build and review the site before making it public

A newly created site is not public automatically. Use WP Admin to work through the following review in a staging or private state:

  1. Confirm site identity. Check the site title, tagline, timezone, language, and administrator email.
  2. Review design. Confirm the theme or site design, typography, colors, logo, favicon, responsive behavior, and image crops at phone and desktop widths.
  3. Review content. Proofread every page, remove sample text, test headings, check dates and prices, and confirm that calls to action point to the correct destination.
  4. Review navigation. Open every menu item, footer link, button, breadcrumb, and internal link. Check that no link still points to a temporary address.
  5. Test forms and notifications. Submit each form with a test address and confirm that the intended recipient receives the message. Verify consent language where applicable.
  6. Check user access. Confirm that each staff member has only the role needed for the work and that no temporary administrator remains unintentionally.
  7. Check the domain. Make sure the intended public domain is connected and selected as primary before announcing the site.
  8. Confirm the email address. Complete any account or domain verification requested by WordPress.com.

How to make the site live

  1. Open the site in WP Admin from the Hosting Dashboard.
  2. Go to Settings → Reading → Site Visibility.
  3. Review the visibility choice and select the control that launches or makes the site public.
  4. Save the setting if the interface requests confirmation.
  5. Open the public domain in a private browser window and test the homepage, a representative internal page, navigation, contact form, and mobile layout.

Before launch, WordPress.com’s guidance recommends reviewing content and navigation, confirming the email address, and setting the intended domain as primary. If the domain was registered or connected recently, allow the documented 24–72-hour activation window before treating propagation as a hosting failure.

What to do if the site is not visible

Symptom Likely cause Action
The site shows a Coming Soon or private screen. The site has not been launched. In WP Admin, open Settings → Reading → Site Visibility and complete the launch control.
The custom domain does not load, but the temporary address works. The domain is still activating or its connection is incomplete. Confirm the domain selection and connection steps, then allow up to 24–72 hours for a recently registered or connected domain to become fully active.
The wrong site opens from the agency dashboard. You selected another site record or domain. Return to the Hosting Dashboard, identify the site by its name and domain, then open its WP Admin link.
The site has the wrong owner or billing account. The creator account became owner during provisioning. Stop before launch and resolve the ownership and subscription arrangement with the client; do not assume staff access equals ownership.
You expected one plan to cover several sites. The sites are independent. Review each site’s plan separately and document the subscription responsible for each project.
You cannot find Multisite controls. You created an independent site, or the host does not support Multisite. Do not try to convert the workflow casually. Decide whether a network is genuinely required and confirm host support first.

When Multisite is the right architecture

WordPress Multisite creates a network of sites inside one WordPress installation. It is materially different from selecting Add new site in a hosting dashboard. A network administrator manages network-level settings, while individual sites operate within that installation’s themes, plugins, users, and domain configuration.

WordPress.org documents enabling the feature by defining WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE in wp-config.php, followed by network configuration in the WordPress administration tools. The documentation also cautions that some hosts will not support it, so ask the host before enabling the feature. If your agency host does not explicitly support Multisite, use independent sites instead of assuming the network can be added later without migration work.

Questions to answer before choosing a network

  • Do the sites need centralized network administration, or do they need separate owners and subscriptions?
  • Can the host support the required network configuration and domain arrangement?
  • Should a failure, maintenance window, or plugin change affect every site in the network?
  • Will clients need independent billing, administrators, backups, and transfer rights?

If the answers point to separate governance, domains, or subscriptions, independent sites are the safer interpretation of “new site.”

A practical agency operating procedure

For a new client project

  1. Obtain written confirmation of the client’s preferred owner account, recovery email, domain, and billing responsibility.
  2. Sign in to that account or document why the agency account is creating the site temporarily.
  3. Use Add new site and choose the fresh-site route unless an existing installation requires migration or Jetpack connection.
  4. Choose the domain route and the plan for that specific site.
  5. Build privately, then have the client review content, navigation, forms, and branding.
  6. Set the intended domain as primary and launch only after approval.
  7. Complete the handoff record and test access using the client’s account.

For a batch of independent sites

Repeat the process one site at a time. Give every site a distinct internal name, domain, owner record, plan record, and launch checklist. The shared Hosting Dashboard is an administration view, not evidence that the sites share configuration or billing.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

For an existing WordPress site

Choose migration when content and configuration must move, or Jetpack connection when the existing installation should be connected rather than recreated. Inventory the source site first, establish a rollback plan, and test URLs, media, forms, users, and redirects before changing the public domain.

Key decisions at a glance

Your situation Recommended path
A brand-new client website with separate ownership Add an independent site, select the client-approved domain and a plan for that site, then launch after review.
The final domain is undecided Start with the free WordPress.com address, build privately, and choose the primary domain before launch.
The domain already belongs to the client Use the existing or connected domain route and keep registrar ownership with the client.
An existing WordPress site must be brought over Use the migration route and validate content, links, forms, users, and redirects.
Several sites need network-wide administration Evaluate Multisite separately, confirm host support, and configure the network deliberately rather than adding independent dashboard sites.
