To target Windows 365 Cloud PCs with a Microsoft Entra ID dynamic device group, create a Security group in the Microsoft Intune admin center, choose Dynamic Device membership, and use a device rule that matches the Cloud PCs you need. For one provisioning policy, match its exact enrollment profile name; for all Cloud PCs, use the documented device-model rule. Validate the results before assigning policies to the group.
What the group targets—and what it does not
“Azure AD” is the former name for Microsoft Entra ID, the directory in which the group and Cloud PC device objects reside. A dynamic device group contains device objects, not the users assigned to a Windows 365 provisioning policy.
A provisioning policy is configured in Intune and assigned to one or more Entra user groups. Windows 365 provisions Cloud PCs for licensed users in those groups. The dynamic device group described here targets the resulting Cloud PC devices, which can then be used for applicable device-based assignments.
Users need a Windows 365 license to use a Cloud PC. Microsoft documents individual and Entra group-based license assignment for Windows 365 Enterprise; Windows 365 Flex licenses are assigned at the tenant level and selected when provisioning policies are created. Microsoft says no specific Entra ID license is required for members of dynamic device groups. These are separate licensing considerations.

Create a group for Cloud PCs from one provisioning policy
- In the Microsoft Intune admin center, go to Groups > New Group.
- Set Group type to Security. Enter a descriptive name and purpose.
- Set Membership type to Dynamic Device, then select Add dynamic query.
- Add the rule
enrollmentProfileNameEquals the exact provisioning policy name used in your tenant. The Microsoft example uses “UX Engineering”; do not use that value unless it is your policy’s actual name. - If the same enrollment profile name may be used by another enrollment workflow, add an AND condition:
deviceModelContainsCloud PC. The combined rule is:(device.enrollmentProfileName -eq "UX Engineering") -and (device.deviceModel -contains "Cloud PC")Replace the example policy name with your exact value. If the name is unique, Microsoft’s documented base rule is just the enrollment profile name condition.
- Select Validate Rules (Preview). Check Cloud PCs from the intended policy, Cloud PCs from another policy, and non-Cloud-PC devices. Confirm the included and excluded devices match your intent.
- Review the validation results, then save and create the group.
Create a group for all Cloud PCs
Use this when the group should include Cloud PCs regardless of provisioning policy. Create a Security group with Dynamic Device membership as above, then add two device-model conditions joined by OR:
device.deviceModel -startsWith "Cloud PC" -or device.deviceModel -startsWith "Windows 365"
Validate the rule against representative Cloud PCs and non-Cloud-PC devices before creating the group. Microsoft’s documented rule uses these two prefixes; do not substitute a broader match without checking its results in your tenant.

Choose a dynamic group or an Intune assignment filter
The right targeting method depends on where the target needs to be used. Microsoft advises considering assignment filters when an Intune app, policy, or profile only needs to target devices by their properties.
| Decision point | Dynamic device group | Intune assignment filter |
|---|---|---|
| Main scope | Entra device membership; useful when the target is needed across workloads. | Filters devices or apps within an Intune assignment. |
| Use it when | The target must extend beyond an Intune policy, such as to Conditional Access, licensing, or Autopilot scenarios. | A device-property filter is sufficient for an Intune app, policy, or profile. |
| Evaluation | Dynamic membership rules evaluate device attributes for group membership. | Microsoft describes the filter as evaluated at device check-in, without waiting for group-membership processing. |
Use a dynamic device group when you need reusable Entra device membership or cross-workload targeting. Use a filter when the requirement is limited to an Intune assignment and a device-property condition is enough. A dynamic device group is not a way to combine user and device membership: choose the appropriate group type for the objects you need to target.

Account for provisioning-policy changes and renamed policies
A Windows 365 provisioning policy orchestrates Cloud PC creation and specifies items such as network, image, optional configuration, and assignment. Editing a policy does not automatically reprovision existing Cloud PCs; changes apply to newly provisioned or manually reprovisioned Cloud PCs.
Renaming a provisioning policy does not update the Cloud PC name or its enrollmentProfileName value in Entra ID. If a group rule relies on that value, verify the device attributes and rule validation results rather than assuming a rename changed existing membership.

Validate before using the group for assignments
- Confirm the group is a Security group with Dynamic Device membership.
- For a policy-specific rule, verify the exact enrollment profile name and test devices from both the intended and another policy.
- For an all-Cloud-PC rule, confirm the documented model prefixes capture the Cloud PCs you expect and exclude unrelated devices.
- Check validation results before applying assignments; an overly broad match can expose unintended devices to a policy.
- Do not assume a specific membership-processing time. Check membership in your tenant before relying on the group for a time-sensitive assignment.
