Use Benchmark Email’s downloadable Claude Skill to draft a branded marketing email, refine the HTML in Claude, and then paste or upload the finished file into Benchmark Email’s Custom HTML editor. You still add your account’s merge tags in Benchmark and must test the completed message in real email clients before sending.

What this workflow produces

Benchmark Email’s Claude Skill is a downloadable instruction package for Claude, not a built-in Benchmark Email editor feature. You install it once in Claude, ask Claude to create email-oriented HTML from your campaign brief, review and revise the result, and then move that HTML into Benchmark Email for personalization, testing, and delivery.

The official how-to, published September 9, 2026, describes a seven-part process: download the skill, install it, start a new Claude conversation, provide a complete brief, iterate on the draft, import the HTML into Benchmark, add merge tags, and test before sending. The skill is intended for newsletters, promotions, product announcements, welcome messages, and similar marketing emails.

Start with Benchmark’s HTML Email Agent page. It provides both a reusable prompt and a Claude Skill download. The page says its prompt resource works with “Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot”; that statement applies to the portable prompt, while the Skill download is the Claude-specific installation route.

What you need before starting

  • A Claude account. The official guide requires one. The reviewed material does not establish which current Claude subscription plans include Skills, so check the capabilities shown in your own account rather than assuming a particular plan.
  • Access to Benchmark Email. You need to open its email editor to paste or upload the generated HTML and to send tests or a campaign.
  • Your campaign information. Gather the goal, offer or story, links, images, logo, brand colors, and section order before asking Claude to write.
  • A way to inspect messages on desktop and mobile. Plan to check at least Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, and a phone after importing the message.

You do not need to write the email code yourself. You do need to review the generated copy, URLs, visual hierarchy, images, and calls to action before sending. A generated layout is a draft that still requires editorial and rendering checks.

Download the Claude Skill

  1. Open Benchmark Email’s HTML Email Agent page.
  2. Choose the option to download the Claude Skill. Benchmark’s guide says the download is hosted through GitHub, so your browser may take you to a GitHub-hosted file or download page.
  3. Save the downloaded skill package somewhere you can find it. Keep the original file until you have confirmed that Claude has accepted it.

The page also offers a general prompt that you can copy into an assistant instead of installing the Skill. Use that route when you want a portable, copy-and-paste workflow or when you are working in an assistant other than Claude. Installation is the better fit when you expect to create or revise several Benchmark-ready emails in Claude and do not want to supply the same operating instructions in every conversation.

Install the Skill in Claude

  1. Open Claude on the web or in the desktop application.
  2. Go to Settings > Skills. Interface labels can change, so if the wording differs, look for the account settings area that manages uploaded Skills.
  3. Use the upload control and select the Skill file you downloaded from Benchmark’s agent page.
  4. Wait for Claude to confirm the upload, then start a new conversation. Benchmark’s guide describes installation as a one-time setup; after that, the Skill should be available in new conversations.

If the upload is rejected, download the file again from the official page and make sure you are selecting the Skill package rather than the portable prompt text. If Skills are not visible in your account, the reviewed material does not identify a universal plan requirement; check Claude’s current account interface or help information instead of trying to infer eligibility from the Benchmark page.

Build a brief Claude can use

The quality of the first HTML draft depends on the specificity of your brief. Tell Claude what the email must accomplish and what it is allowed to use. A request such as “make a nice newsletter” leaves decisions about hierarchy, links, images, and branding unresolved.

Define the campaign goal

State whether the message is a limited promotion, regular newsletter, product announcement, welcome email, event invitation, or another format. Explain the desired action: purchase, registration, reading an article, downloading a resource, or simply learning about an update. If the message has a deadline, include the date and the time zone you want shown.

Supply the content and offer

Provide the approved headline, supporting copy, offer terms, product or event details, and any legal or eligibility language. Identify what must appear above the first scroll, what can be lower in the message, and what should be omitted. If Claude is expected to draft copy, specify the audience, voice, reading level, and maximum length instead of asking it to “sound professional.”

List every destination and asset

Give Claude the exact URLs for the primary call to action, secondary links, preference center, unsubscribe destination if your template requires one, and social profiles. Include image URLs or clearly describe which supplied assets belong in which section. Say whether an image should be full width, constrained to a maximum width, or used as a small icon. Do not ask Claude to invent a destination URL.

Describe the brand system

Include hexadecimal color values for the background, text, buttons, links, borders, and accents. Identify the logo file and where it should appear. Add font preferences, but provide a practical fallback stack because recipients may not have the preferred font installed. If your organization has written brand guidelines, point Claude to the relevant rules or paste the portions that control voice, color, spacing, and logo use.

Specify the structure and order

Write the intended sequence, for example: preheader, logo, hero headline, short introduction, primary button, three-feature row, testimonial, secondary link, and footer. Tell Claude which sections are optional and whether the email should be one column on mobile. This prevents the model from adding decorative blocks that compete with the main action.

A reusable brief template

Use the Benchmark HTML Email Skill to create a marketing email.

For a real request, replace that one-line instruction with a complete brief. You can use this structure inside your Claude message:

Campaign goal: [describe the outcome]
Audience: [who receives it]
Offer or story: [approved details and terms]
Primary CTA: [button label] — [exact URL]
Secondary links: [labels and exact URLs]
Assets: [logo and image URLs, with placement]
Brand colors: [hex values for background, text, button, and accents]
Typography: [preferred font and fallbacks]
Sections in order: [list the blocks]
Voice and length: [tone, reading level, and limits]
Mobile behavior: [stacking, alignment, and image rules]
Footer requirements: [company details, preferences, and other required text]
Output: provide complete HTML suitable for Benchmark Email’s Custom HTML editor.

The bracketed items are variables in a template, not text to leave in the final email. Replace every one before asking Claude to produce the message.

Generate, inspect, and iterate in Claude

Start a new conversation after installation and explicitly tell Claude to use the Benchmark email Skill. Ask for the complete HTML and, if useful, a short outline of the sections it created. Keep the creative brief and the resulting code in the same conversation so that revisions have context.

Review the first draft in a fixed order

  1. Content: Confirm that the headline, offer, dates, disclaimers, and supporting copy match your approved information.
  2. Links: Open every CTA, image-linked element, logo, social link, and footer link. Check for missing protocols, accidental placeholder text, and destinations that do not match the button label.
  3. Hierarchy: Make sure a reader can identify the sender, understand the value, and find the primary action without searching.
  4. Branding: Compare colors, logo treatment, spacing, and type choices with your guidelines. Verify contrast for body text and buttons.
  5. Images: Check the source URLs, proportions, alternative text, and whether the message still makes sense when images are blocked.
  6. Code: Look for duplicated sections, malformed links, unintended inline styles, and content that was omitted from the visible draft.

Make targeted revision requests

Specific follow-up instructions produce more predictable changes than asking Claude to “improve it.” Examples include: “Reduce the hero headline to 32 pixels on desktop and 26 pixels on mobile,” “Move the primary button directly below the introductory paragraph,” “Change the footer to one column on screens narrower than 600 pixels,” or “Replace the three-column feature row with stacked sections while keeping the same copy and links.” Ask Claude to return the full revised HTML after each meaningful change so you have a complete file to import.

Use the same conversation for variations. Benchmark says the workflow can support alternate versions and subject-line options. Ask for one change at a time when you need to isolate differences, then compare the versions against the same content and link checklist.

Import the HTML into Benchmark Email

  1. Sign in to Benchmark Email and open Emails > Create New Email > Custom HTML.
  2. Choose whether to paste the generated HTML into the editor or upload the saved HTML file.
  3. Save or preview the message in Benchmark, then inspect the rendered result rather than judging it only from Claude’s preview.

Benchmark’s guide notes that a logo can look broken in Claude’s preview yet display correctly in Benchmark’s editor. Treat the editor’s rendering and your test messages as the decision points; do not discard a valid asset solely because Claude’s preview failed to display it. Conversely, a preview that looks correct is not proof that every mail client will render it identically.

Add merge tags in Benchmark

Merge tags insert account-specific contact data such as a subscriber’s name or organization. The Claude Skill cannot know which tags exist in your Benchmark account, so add them after import in Benchmark’s HTML editor.

  1. Place the cursor where the personalized value belongs, such as the greeting or a recommended-product line.
  2. Use Benchmark’s merge-tag control or the tag syntax shown in your account to insert the field. Select the account’s actual field rather than copying a tag from an unrelated template.
  3. Configure fallback text for every optional field. A greeting should remain natural when the contact has no first name, and a missing company or location should not leave an empty sentence.
  4. Preview the message with a contact record that has the field populated and another that leaves it blank.

Keep personalization separate from the initial Claude brief unless you are describing where it should appear. The exact token is account-specific and belongs in Benchmark, where it can be validated against your contact fields.

Complete the pre-send checklist

Before scheduling or sending, finish Benchmark’s sending checklist and verify the operational details below.

  • Recipient list: Confirm the intended list or segment, exclusions, and suppression rules.
  • Subject line: Check that it accurately reflects the message and matches the campaign’s voice.
  • Preview text: Supply intentional inbox preview text instead of allowing an arbitrary first sentence or code fragment to appear.
  • Sender details: Verify the from name, from address, and reply-to address.
  • Personalization: Test populated and empty contact fields, including fallback wording.
  • Links: Click every destination in the imported message and confirm tracking or redirect behavior required by your organization.
  • Images: Check that image URLs load, alternative text is meaningful, and the layout remains understandable with images disabled.
  • Compliance content: Confirm the footer, preference controls, and unsubscribe mechanism required for your account and audience.
  • Responsive layout: Review narrow and wide views, long headlines, long names, and buttons with translated or unusually long labels.

Send tests in real clients

Send a test to yourself and inspect it in Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail, plus a phone. Compare the actual received message with the Benchmark editor preview. Check for clipped text, unexpected font substitution, buttons that are difficult to tap, images that do not load, excessive horizontal scrolling, and footer content that becomes unreadable on a small screen.

Email clients implement HTML and CSS differently. Benchmark positions the Skill as producing email-oriented HTML, but the official guide still recommends client testing. Do not treat a generated file as a guarantee of universal rendering. If a client exposes a problem, return to Claude with the exact symptom and the affected viewport, request a narrowly scoped fix, import the revised file, and repeat the test.

Prompt versus Claude Skill: which route fits?

Choice Setup Where the instructions live Best fit
Portable HTML Email prompt Copy the prompt from Benchmark’s agent page into an assistant whenever you need it. In the conversation where you paste it. One-off work or teams using different assistants.
Claude Skill Download from Benchmark’s agent page and upload once in Claude under Settings > Skills. In Claude’s installed Skill, available in new conversations after setup. Repeated HTML email creation in Claude.
ChatGPT custom GPT option The agent page labels this option “Coming soon.” Availability is time-sensitive; verify the current page before relying on it. Only if the option is actually available in your account and workflow.

The portable prompt and the Claude Skill are two delivery methods for the same general email-production objective. Installing the Skill does not move the final campaign into Benchmark automatically; you still import the HTML, add account-specific personalization, and run the sending checks in Benchmark.

Modify an existing HTML template

You can use the same conversation-based workflow when you already have an HTML email and want a controlled change. Give Claude the existing file, state exactly what must remain unchanged, and describe the requested edit. For example: preserve all copy and URLs, change the button color to a specified hex value, replace the hero image, and stack the feature blocks on mobile.

Ask for the complete revised HTML rather than a fragment, then compare the before-and-after files for lost links, altered text, removed footer elements, and changes to image paths. Import the revised file into a separate Benchmark draft when possible. This keeps the previously approved version available while you test the modification.

Troubleshoot common failures

The Skill does not appear in Claude

Confirm that the upload finished under Settings > Skills and that you opened a new conversation afterward. Re-download the package from Benchmark’s official agent page if the file may be incomplete. If the Skills control is absent, consult the current Claude account interface; the available material does not specify a universal subscription tier.

The generated email contains placeholder copy

Return to the brief and replace every variable, example, and instructional note with approved content. Ask Claude to search the HTML for placeholder terms and list any it finds before returning the corrected file.

A logo is broken in Claude but not in Benchmark

Check the logo URL and file availability, then inspect the message in Benchmark’s editor. Benchmark’s guide specifically warns that a logo may fail in Claude’s preview while displaying in Benchmark. Use the imported rendering and a real test email to decide whether a change is necessary.

Merge tags show as text or render blank

Remove the copied token and insert the field through Benchmark’s own merge-tag controls. Confirm that the field exists in the account and add fallback text for contacts who lack a value. Test both populated and empty records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The layout breaks in one client

Record the client, device width, and visible symptom. Ask Claude for a focused compatibility adjustment, such as a simpler table structure, stacked mobile columns, safer font fallbacks, or a larger tap target. Re-import and test in all previously checked clients; a fix for one renderer can affect another.

The copy or CTA is wrong after an iteration

Use a targeted revision request that names the exact section and says what must not change. Recheck every URL and approved term against the brief before importing the new version.

A repeatable production checklist

  1. Open Benchmark’s HTML Email Agent page and download the Claude Skill.
  2. Upload it once in Claude under Settings > Skills.
  3. Start a new conversation and provide the goal, audience, content, links, assets, brand values, and section order.
  4. Generate the complete HTML and inspect copy, links, images, hierarchy, and code.
  5. Request focused revisions or alternate versions in the same conversation.
  6. Open Benchmark Email at Emails > Create New Email > Custom HTML.
  7. Paste or upload the final HTML and inspect the Benchmark rendering.
  8. Add account-specific merge tags and fallback text in Benchmark.
  9. Verify recipient list, subject, preview text, sender details, footer, images, and links.
  10. Send tests to Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, and a phone, fix issues, and test again before sending the campaign.
