You can turn an image into a 3D-printable model, but the right method depends on what you have: one picture or photographs of the real object from multiple angles. A single-image tool must guess the hidden sides; photogrammetry uses overlapping views to estimate the object’s shape. In either case, inspect and prepare the mesh, export it to a format your slicer accepts, and check the sliced layers before printing.
Choose the image-to-3D route
A 2D image records a projection of a 3D scene, so it does not directly preserve depth or show hidden surfaces. Meshroom’s documentation describes photogrammetry as making measurements from photographs and explains that projecting a 3D scene into a 2D image loses depth information. That distinction determines what an image-to-3D workflow can realistically recover.

Make a model from one image
Use a single-image workflow when you have only one reference image or want a concept model rather than a measured replica. The model can look plausible from the front while having an inaccurate back, thickness, or hidden features. Those details are inferred, not recovered from direct visual evidence.

The One-2-3-45 paper describes a method that generates additional views conditioned on an input image and then reconstructs a 3D mesh from those views. It is an example of a research approach, not proof that a current consumer service will reproduce a particular object faithfully. See the One-2-3-45 paper.

- Choose a clear image that shows the important visible features and silhouette.
- Use an image-to-3D generator to create a mesh. For example, PHORM and Meshy AI describe image-to-3D features on their product pages; these are vendor-stated capabilities, not independent print assessments: PHORM and Meshy AI.
- Rotate the result and inspect every side, including the back, underside, and areas that were occluded in the source. Edit dimensions and features that matter rather than assuming the generated geometry is accurate.
- Continue with mesh checks and slicer preview before printing.
Reconstruct an object from multiple photographs
If the physical object is available and its shape matters, take photographs from overlapping viewpoints around it and process the image set with photogrammetry. More angles provide more image evidence than one view, although they do not guarantee a complete or flawless reconstruction.
Meshroom is documented as free, open-source 3D reconstruction software based on AliceVision. Its documentation describes reconstructing geometry from unordered photographs. Check the current documentation for release and hardware requirements before installing it: Meshroom documentation.

- Photograph the object from multiple viewpoints so neighboring images show overlapping parts of its surface.
- Import the photographs into a photogrammetry workflow such as Meshroom and run its reconstruction process.
- Review the resulting mesh from all sides. Look for missing surfaces, stray geometry, or areas the photographs did not capture clearly.
- Edit and prepare the mesh, then use your slicer to check the layers before printing.
Check the mesh before slicing
A convincing 3D preview is not the same as a mesh that is ready to print. In a 3D editor or repair tool, inspect the model for:
- Open or missing surfaces that leave the object incomplete.
- Non-manifold areas or unintended disconnected fragments.
- Walls, tips, or other details too thin for the intended printer and material.
- A scale that fits the printer and preserves the dimensions you need.
Then open the exported model in the slicer you plan to use. Inspect its layer preview to catch gaps, unexpected islands, or other problems in the sliced result. Orientation, supports, tolerances, and minimum wall thickness depend on the printer, material, feature geometry, and process; use the relevant printer and slicer documentation rather than relying on a universal setting.

Export a file your slicer accepts
Export the inspected mesh in a format supported by your target slicer. PHORM says its service exports STL and 3MF and claims automatic repair and watertightness verification. Meshy AI also claims STL and 3MF export and printability checks. These are vendor descriptions, not independently verified guarantees that every generated model will print successfully. Confirm the export options and inspect the result in your own slicer.

Decide whether the result is ready to print
- For a one-image model, accept that the hidden geometry is an interpretation and check whether it suits your purpose.
- For a photographed real object, use multiple viewpoints, then review reconstruction gaps and artifacts.
- For either route, verify the mesh, use a supported export format, and inspect the slicer’s layer preview.
- Follow the printer and slicer guidance for material-specific dimensions, orientation, and supports.
