Crayfish, crawfish, and crawdads usually mean the same kind of freshwater crustacean. The difference is regional wording and social context, not a biological boundary. “Crayfish” is the safest general and technical term, “crawfish” is especially prominent in Louisiana and Southern U.S. food culture, and “crawdad” is an informal regional expression used in parts of the interior United States. Because these names can refer to hundreds of species, only a scientific name or an agency-standardized species name can identify a particular animal precisely.
The short answer: three names for the same broad group
All three words generally describe freshwater decapod crustaceans in the group commonly called crayfish. Decapod means “ten-footed,” referring to the five pairs of walking legs typical of these animals. They are freshwater relatives of shrimp and lobsters, with a segmented body, jointed legs, and a prominent pair of claws in many species.
The names overlap rather than divide the animals into three kinds. A person in Louisiana may say “crawfish,” a technical paper may use “crayfish,” and someone in another part of the United States may say “crawdad” while pointing to the same species. The animal does not change when the word changes.
Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife explicitly says the common names are equally acceptable and reflect regional differences among speakers, not different species. NOAA’s technical terminology likewise notes that “crayfish” is most common in technical literature, while the same animals are also known as crawfish, crawdads, and mudbugs.

How the terms compare
| Term | What it usually refers to | Typical context | Species-level precision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crayfish | The broad group of freshwater decapod crustaceans | Technical writing, government agencies, education, and general English | Not precise by itself; many genera and species use the name |
| Crawfish | The same broad group | Louisiana and Southern U.S. cuisine, seafood markets, and everyday speech | Not precise by itself; an accepted market name |
| Crawdad | The same broad group | Informal regional speech, especially in parts of the interior United States | Not precise by itself; a colloquial label |
These are tendencies, not fixed borders. People move, families use different vocabulary, and a single community may use two or all three terms. None of the words is an incorrect spelling when it matches the speaker’s intended regional usage.
Why “crayfish” is the default in scientific and general writing
“Crayfish” is the most dependable choice when you are writing for a broad audience or discussing the animals in a biological context. NOAA’s technical bulletin identifies it as the term used most often in technical literature. Wildlife agencies, university extension programs, and scientific references commonly use it for that reason.
Using “crayfish” does not make a statement more biologically specific. It simply signals a neutral or formal register. A field biologist still needs to provide a scientific name, location, or diagnostic description when the identity of one species matters.

Why “crawfish” is strongly associated with Louisiana
“Crawfish” is deeply established in Louisiana food culture, especially in the phrase “crawfish boil.” Restaurants, seafood sellers, festivals, recipes, and local conversations commonly use that spelling. The term is also used elsewhere in the South and is recognized in seafood commerce.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Seafood List accepts “crawfish” or “crayfish” as market names for Astacus species. That market usage does not mean every animal sold as crawfish belongs to Astacus; the common name can cover multiple species and genera. The market-name entry illustrates how the two spellings can be interchangeable in commerce while remaining broad biologically.

“Crawfish” does not identify a Louisiana-only species
A Louisiana menu tells you about culinary tradition, not necessarily the exact species being served. If a legal, scientific, or environmental document must identify the animal, it should name the species and, where relevant, the location or population. “Crawfish” alone is not enough.
What “crawdad” means—and what it does not mean
“Crawdad” is an informal regional term for a crayfish. It is especially associated with parts of the interior United States, although usage varies from one state, family, or generation to another. A speaker who says “crawdad” is not referring to a separate biological group.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe word’s regional history is more useful than trying to assign it a universal definition. Common names develop in local speech and can spread through migration, media, and family traditions. There is no nationwide map in which one exact line separates crawdad from crayfish or crawfish. If you need to know what a person means, ask about the animal or the local usage rather than inferring a species from the nickname.
Why etymology should not be treated as identification
People sometimes look for a literal explanation of “crawdad,” but an origin story would not solve the identification problem. Even if a historical explanation were accepted, the modern word still functions as a regional common name. Smithsonian reference material emphasizes that common names are local and non-scientific; standardized scientific names are what resolve ambiguity.
How many kinds of crayfish are there?
There are far too many species for any of the three common names to identify one animal reliably. Virginia Cooperative Extension and Virginia Tech published these approximate figures in 2024:

| Geographic scope | Approximate number | How to interpret the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Worldwide | About 500 species | An approximate published total, not a permanent census |
| North America | About 400 species | Shows how diverse the group is within the continent |
| United States | About 353 species | Nearly 70% of the approximate world total cited by Virginia Tech |
Counts can change as taxonomists describe new species, revise classifications, or combine names. The figures are useful for scale, but they should not be presented as an exact current inventory. They also demonstrate why a common word such as “crayfish” cannot function as a complete species identification.

Why common names become ambiguous
Common names are designed for communication within communities, not for global taxonomic consistency. The same word may be applied to several related species, while one species may have different names in neighboring regions. Local names can reflect cuisine, landscape, fishing traditions, or family vocabulary.
Scientific names solve a different problem. A genus-and-species name is intended to point to one taxonomic identity under the naming rules used by biologists. Smithsonian references explain that scientific names standardize identities when local names are ambiguous. In a report, specimen record, permit, or conservation plan, include the scientific name whenever an exact identity matters.
Use more than a common name when accuracy matters
- Scientific name: the strongest way to specify the taxon, provided it is current and correctly spelled.
- Location: state, watershed, county, or collection site can narrow the possibilities.
- Agency-standardized name: wildlife agencies may publish an accepted common name tied to a defined species.
- Diagnostic details: photographs, claw shape, coloration, body markings, and habitat can support an identification, but they should not replace an authoritative species determination when consequences are significant.
Which spelling is correct?
All three spellings are correct in the contexts where they are conventionally used:
- Choose crayfish for neutral, scientific, educational, or nationwide writing.
- Choose crawfish when you are reflecting Louisiana or Southern food culture, a local speaker’s wording, or a seafood-market label.
- Choose crawdad when quoting or preserving an informal regional voice.
Do not “correct” a regional speaker simply because your preferred dictionary uses another form. If a document has a formal style requirement, define the term once and then use it consistently. For example: “This article uses crayfish as the general term; local sources may call the animals crawfish or crawdads.”

Common misunderstandings to avoid
Misunderstanding: they are three different animals
They are not three separate species categories. The words usually point to the same broad group of freshwater crustaceans.
Misunderstanding: “crawfish” always means a Louisiana species
Louisiana made the term famous through food culture, but the word is used in other Southern communities and in seafood markets. It does not, by itself, establish a geographic origin or species.
Misunderstanding: “crayfish” is more scientifically precise
It is more formal, but still broad. Technical authors use a scientific name when they need species-level precision.
Misunderstanding: a name reveals the animal’s habitat
The common-name choice usually reveals the speaker’s region or context, not whether the animal came from a stream, pond, wetland, or another freshwater environment. Habitat and species must be established separately.
A practical decision guide for writers and speakers
- Decide whether your audience is regional. If readers are from many places, start with “crayfish.” If you are writing a Louisiana menu or describing a local festival, “crawfish” may sound more natural.
- Decide whether the register is formal. Use “crayfish” in technical, legal, educational, and agency documents unless a quoted or official local name requires another term.
- Check whether species-level accuracy matters. For a scientific claim, identification record, regulation, or conservation action, add the scientific name and location.
- Preserve local language when quoting people. “Crawdad” can accurately represent a speaker or community even when the surrounding article uses “crayfish.”
- Define the broad term if confusion is likely. A short note that the names are regional variants prevents readers from assuming three different animals.
How to answer the most common questions
Are crawfish and crayfish the same thing?
Usually yes. They are different regional or contextual names for freshwater crayfish, not separate biological categories.

Is a crawdad different from a crawfish?
Usually no. “Crawdad” is an informal regional term for the same broad group that many people call crawfish or crayfish.
What do people in Louisiana call crayfish?
“Crawfish” is the dominant term in Louisiana food culture, including crawfish boils, restaurant menus, and local seafood conversation.
Why are they called crawdads?
“Crawdad” is a regional common name that developed in local speech. Its use identifies a vocabulary tradition, not a distinct species, and common-name history cannot substitute for scientific identification.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Which term should I use?
Use “crayfish” as the neutral all-purpose choice. Use “crawfish” for the culinary and regional context where it is customary, and “crawdad” when reflecting an informal local voice.
Bottom line
Crayfish, crawfish, and crawdads generally name the same freshwater decapod crustaceans. “Crayfish” is the safest formal term, “crawfish” carries a strong Louisiana and Southern culinary association, and “crawdad” is a regional colloquial variant. Since hundreds of species share these common names, use a scientific name or an agency-standardized species name whenever the exact animal matters.
