For the most predictable setup, run Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge and the Cracker’s Wither Storm Performance pack. Install the identical Minecraft version, loader, mod build, and dependencies on every client and on the server. Expect unusually heavy FPS and server-TPS demand as the storm grows, so begin in a new, backed-up world, tune rendering before the boss fight, and change evolution speed only through the per-world server configuration.

What Cracker’s Wither Storm adds

Cracker’s Wither Storm is a Minecraft Java survival-challenge mod inspired by Minecraft: Story Mode. It introduces the Wither Storm as a progressively more dangerous boss rather than a conventional hostile mob. Players gather equipment, evade the storm, manage Wither Sickness, and eventually attempt to defeat it. The project also includes multiplayer support, the Formidibomb, configurable settings, and additional tools and weapons.

The mod’s own description captures the intended loop: players “try to defeat the Wither Storm while running, hiding, and gearing up as they go along.” That design matters when planning a server. The storm is not a short encounter that can be spawned safely beside a long-running base; it can consume terrain and create sustained simulation and rendering work.

Supported Minecraft versions and loaders

The compatibility listing covers Minecraft Java Edition on several release lines. Client and dedicated-server environments are supported, but each installation must use one matching combination of game version, loader, mod file, and dependencies.

Minecraft Java version Listed loaders Client support Server support Use case
1.20.1 Forge and NeoForge Supported Supported Current target for the performance-focused pack
1.19.2–1.19.4 Forge and NeoForge Supported Supported Choose the exact minor release used by the mod file
1.18.2 Forge and NeoForge Supported Supported Use only with a matching 1.18.2 build
1.16.5 Forge and NeoForge Supported Supported Use only with a matching 1.16.5 build

Do not install a 1.20.1 jar in a 1.19.4 instance, or combine Forge files with a NeoForge profile. A server can start successfully and still reject clients when even one of these identifiers differs. Check the mod’s current release page for the exact file and dependency list before creating the instance; listings can change as maintainers publish updates.

Why 1.20.1 is the practical starting point

Cracker’s Wither Storm Performance is a Forge 1.20.1 pack for both client and server. Its stated purpose is an optimized, shader-ready setup for the boss fight. If you are starting from scratch and want the performance-oriented configuration, 1.20.1 with Forge is the clearest choice. Older versions remain useful when an existing community world or another required mod is tied to them.

Choose a setup before installing

Setup Best for Advantages Trade-offs
Standalone mod on a client Solo testing and configuration Fastest way to verify the storm and settings Does not test multiplayer TPS or connection load
Self-hosted Forge server Administrators who control files and backups Full access to world configuration, logs, and save files You maintain the runtime, updates, networking, and recovery plan
Managed modded host Groups that want a web panel and persistent uptime Usually provides automated startup, console access, and scheduled options Resources, regions, backups, pricing, and supported mod versions vary by provider
Cracker’s Wither Storm Performance pack Players prioritizing a tuned 1.20.1 client/server baseline Optimized and shader-ready starting point Locks the project to its pack version and Forge 1.20.1 target

Prepare safely before the first storm

  • Use Minecraft Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.
  • Pick one exact game version and loader, then record that choice for every player.
  • Download the mod and all listed dependencies for that same version.
  • Create a new test world first. The storm’s destructive behavior can permanently damage a valuable save.
  • Back up the world before summoning the boss, and keep at least one copy outside the live server directory.
  • Agree on who can change server configuration and who is responsible for restoring a backup.

Large visual effects can expose weak hardware or an overloaded server quickly. Test the complete mod list with the intended render distance, resource packs, and shaders before inviting players. A world that is stable during ordinary exploration may slow dramatically once the storm reaches later phases.

Install the mod on a client

  1. Create the game profile. In your launcher or mod-instance manager, create a Minecraft Java profile for the exact release you selected, such as 1.20.1.
  2. Install the loader. Choose the Forge or NeoForge profile specified by the mod file. Do not substitute one loader for the other simply because both appear in the compatibility listing.
  3. Add the files. Place the Wither Storm mod jar and every required dependency in that profile’s mods folder, or import them through the manager’s mod-pack interface.
  4. Match optional components. If you use the performance pack, install its complete 1.20.1 Forge set rather than mixing selected jars from a different release. Add shader or optimization components only when their versions are compatible.
  5. Launch once without the boss. Start the profile, enter a disposable world, and confirm that the title screen and world load without missing-dependency or wrong-version errors.
  6. Check configuration access. Open the mod’s world-options menu in single-player. This confirms that the world-specific settings are being created before you begin a serious run.
  7. Back up the clean world. Quit the game completely, copy the save, and label it as the pre-storm restore point.

Keep the client profile isolated from an unmodded installation. Mixing jars between profiles makes it harder to identify whether a crash comes from the Wither Storm mod, a loader mismatch, a shader, or another gameplay mod.

Install a dedicated server

  1. Make a separate server directory. Use a new folder for the selected Minecraft release and do not point the server at a personal single-player save.
  2. Install the matching server loader. Run the Forge or NeoForge server installer for the exact game version used by clients. Use the launch script generated for that installation rather than copying a client profile’s files.
  3. Start the server once. The first launch creates the standard files. Follow the loader’s EULA requirement, then stop the process cleanly before adding mods or editing settings.
  4. Install the mod set. Copy the Wither Storm jar, dependencies, and any performance-pack components into the server’s mods folder. Client-only visual mods should not be copied blindly to a dedicated server.
  5. Start and inspect the console. Confirm that the loader discovers the mod and that no dependency, registry, or version error appears. Keep the console log from this clean start for future troubleshooting.
  6. Create or import a test world. Generate a fresh world, join with one client, and verify ordinary movement, block interaction, and saving before summoning the storm.
  7. Stop and back up. Shut down through the server console, copy the world directory, and preserve the copy before the first evolution phase.
  8. Invite players only after a compatibility check. Every player should launch the same Minecraft version, loader, mod build, and required dependencies.

The server configuration is per world. On a dedicated server, the relevant file is serverconfig/witherstormmod-server.toml inside that world’s directory. If the server hosts multiple worlds, inspect the configuration associated with the world you actually run; changing a different world’s file will not alter the active save.

How to make the storm evolve faster

The setting documented for evolution speed is evolutionAttributeModifier. Values below 1 accelerate evolution, and 0.1 is the fastest allowed value. In single-player, reach the mod’s world-options menu. On a dedicated server, stop the server and edit serverconfig/witherstormmod-server.toml for the active world.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Make a backup of the world while the server is stopped.
  2. Open the TOML file in a plain-text editor.
  3. Find evolutionAttributeModifier and enter a value below 1, no lower than 0.1.
  4. Save the file without changing TOML punctuation or unrelated settings.
  5. Start the server or reload the world before judging the result. The documentation specifies that a world reload is required for the change to apply.
  6. Watch the console and the storm in a test world first. Faster evolution leaves less time to gather equipment and can increase the period during which the server is under heavy load.

Do not use an aggressive value in a long-running community world until players have agreed on the difficulty. Evolution speed changes the challenge pacing; it is not a performance fix.

Why the Wither Storm causes lag

Minecraft is not designed around entities as large as the Wither Storm. The project documentation attributes the severe load to the storm’s size and complex mechanics. As it grows, the client must render more geometry and effects while the server simulates movement, collisions, block interaction, targeting, and the evolving boss state.

Client FPS load

FPS problems appear as stutter, delayed camera movement, or a display that becomes unresponsive while the server remains reachable. Render distance, particles, shaders, animated resource packs, GPU capability, and the number of visible effects all influence this side of the problem.

Server TPS load

TPS problems appear as delayed block breaks, slow entity movement, rubber-banding, and commands that execute late for every player. CPU performance, other mods, world activity, player count, and the storm’s phase matter more than the client’s graphics card. A high-FPS client cannot repair an overloaded server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No controlled benchmark establishes a universal FPS, TPS, memory, or player-count requirement. Results vary by Minecraft release, loader, mod list, render distance, shader settings, CPU, GPU, memory allocation, player count, and storm phase.

Performance tuning that addresses documented problems

Disable OptiFine Smooth World when the storm disappears

The project notes a specific OptiFine failure mode: the storm may not be visible or may stop evolving when Smooth World is enabled. Open Video Settings > Performance and disable Smooth World. Restart the world and test again. If the problem persists, remove OptiFine temporarily and reproduce the issue with the base loader and mod set so you can separate a rendering conflict from a server or configuration fault.

Reduce client rendering cost

  • Lower render distance and simulation distance before lowering every visual option at once; this makes it easier to see which change helps.
  • Disable or reduce shaders, high-cost particles, animated resource packs, and extra visual effects during the boss fight.
  • Close other GPU-heavy applications and use the same settings for every comparison.
  • Test in the actual storm phase that causes trouble. A quiet overworld session is not a useful performance baseline.

Address server TPS in later phases

The performance wiki recommends checking the client configuration and says that enabling Squash Hitboxes in the server configuration can help TPS in higher phases. The same documentation warns that this setting may have drawbacks, so enable it on a copy of the world, observe entity interactions and combat, and keep it only if the trade-off is acceptable for your group.

Do not promise a fixed improvement from Squash Hitboxes. It is a targeted mitigation for a documented high-phase problem, not a guarantee that every server will maintain a particular TPS.

Managed hosting: what to verify

A managed host is optional; self-hosting remains viable when an administrator can maintain the server and network. Some providers advertise one-click deployment for the Cracker’s Wither Storm Performance pack, but an advertised button does not establish that the current pack version, region, or resource allocation suits your group.

Before paying for a managed instance, verify:

  • the exact Minecraft and Forge version supported by the template;
  • the CPU allocation and whether it is shared or dedicated;
  • the memory allocation and upgrade path;
  • the data-center region and expected distance for your players;
  • automated backup frequency, retention, and whether you can download backups;
  • file-manager or SFTP access to serverconfig/witherstormmod-server.toml;
  • mod and custom-jar support, console access, and restore procedures;
  • recurring price, renewal terms, cancellation policy, and current service limits.

Ask the provider how it handles a world that grows dramatically during later storm phases. A host that performs well for ordinary modded survival may still need a different CPU allocation for this boss.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely cause Action
Client refuses to join Minecraft version, loader, mod build, or dependency mismatch Compare the complete profile and server mod list character-for-character; install the exact release on both sides.
Server stops during startup Wrong loader, missing dependency, or client-only jar on the server Read the first dependency or environment error in the console, remove the incompatible file, and install the server-side requirement for the selected version.
Storm is invisible or does not evolve with OptiFine Smooth World compatibility issue Open Video Settings > Performance, disable Smooth World, restart, and retest without OptiFine if needed.
Severe stutter for one player Client rendering load, shaders, particles, or resource pack Lower render and simulation distance, disable shaders and costly effects, then test the same storm phase again.
All players experience delayed actions Server TPS pressure from storm mechanics, later phases, or other mods Check server logs and tick performance, reduce concurrent activity, review the server configuration, and test Squash Hitboxes on a backup.
Evolution setting appears unchanged Wrong world file or no world reload Edit the active world’s serverconfig/witherstormmod-server.toml, confirm the value is at least 0.1, and reload the world.
World is damaged beyond recovery Storm destruction in a valuable save Stop the server, restore the pre-storm backup, and use a disposable or separately copied world for future tests.

Operational practices for multiplayer

  • Tell players when the storm will be summoned and whether the world can be reset.
  • Assign one administrator to configuration changes so competing edits do not overwrite each other.
  • Take a backup before changing evolution speed, enabling Squash Hitboxes, updating the loader, or adding another large mod.
  • Schedule maintenance outside active play and shut down cleanly before copying files.
  • Keep the original mod jars and configuration alongside the backup so a restore reproduces the same environment.
  • Use a test world to evaluate shader changes, performance settings, and faster evolution before applying them to the shared challenge.

Recommended decision

For a new group, use Minecraft Java 1.20.1, Forge, and the Cracker’s Wither Storm Performance pack on both client and server. Validate the complete mod set in a fresh world, disable OptiFine Smooth World if the storm vanishes or stalls, and tune rendering before the encounter. If later phases cause server-TPS problems, investigate the server configuration and test Squash Hitboxes on a backup rather than assuming more client FPS will help. Use evolutionAttributeModifier = 0.1 only when the group deliberately wants the fastest documented progression, and always reload the world after changing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run this on Minecraft Bedrock Edition?

No. The compatibility listing is for Minecraft Java Edition and its Forge or NeoForge loaders; a Bedrock add-on is not the same project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the performance pack required to play the mod?

No. It is an optional Forge 1.20.1 client-and-server pack intended as an optimized, shader-ready starting point. The base mod also lists other supported Minecraft versions and loaders.

Will lowering my graphics settings fix a lagging server?

Only client-side FPS. If every player experiences delayed actions or rubber-banding, the bottleneck is server TPS and requires server-side troubleshooting.
