Generally, no—you should not disable CPU thermal throttling. It reduces processor speed or power when temperatures reach a protective limit. If it happens often, diagnose the cooling or system configuration rather than removing the safeguard.

What CPU thermal throttling does

Thermal throttling is a processor protection mechanism: when temperature exceeds the processor’s thermal limit, the CPU reduces its clock speed, and sometimes power, to bring heat under control. Intel describes this behavior as protection and as a sign that the processor may be overheating (Intel’s throttling explanation, last reviewed April 9, 2026).

The immediate trade-off is lower performance while the limit is active. That does not make the protection the cause of the underlying problem. Disabling it may make the CPU run faster briefly, but it removes a response intended to control heat. If throttling cannot keep temperatures down—for example, because cooling has failed or the system was assembled incorrectly—the processor may shut down automatically (Intel’s thermal-protection guidance, last reviewed March 26, 2024).

Why disabling a BIOS or software setting is risky

Some motherboards expose a CPU Thermal Throttling control in BIOS, but its presence does not mean turning it off is a safe performance fix. The exact setting and behavior depend on the board and system; an ASRock manual is one example, not a universal BIOS guide (ASRock B550M Pro4 manual).

Without normal thermal control, temperatures can rise beyond what the cooling setup or chassis was designed to handle. Possible outcomes include instability, unexpectedly high chassis temperatures, emergency shutdown, and reliability risk. A separate shutdown safeguard is not a reason to disable throttling: shutdown is a last line of protection if temperature cannot otherwise be controlled.

When the setting is part of laptop thermal management

On some laptops, the control you are considering may not be a processor-only throttle setting. Intel Dynamic Tuning Technology (DTT) is platform software that helps manage system power and thermals; the computer manufacturer selects its final settings for that design. Intel advises against disabling DTT unless the manufacturer directs you to do so (Intel Dynamic Tuning overview, last reviewed May 11, 2026).

Removing platform thermal controls can produce higher-than-designed temperatures, unexpected behavior, or thermal or power shutdowns. Intel’s warning specifically discusses laptops with discrete graphics and notes possible warranty implications; consult your manufacturer’s guidance for your exact model rather than assuming the same policy applies to every system (Intel’s DTT guidance, last reviewed May 11, 2026).

How to investigate frequent throttling

Start by confirming that the limit is thermal. A drop in CPU frequency can also result from power, current, or OEM platform limits, which require different fixes. Intel’s XTU guidance discusses power and current limit indicators and possible causes such as inadequate cooling or power delivery and configured limits (Intel XTU limit indicators, last reviewed March 26, 2024).

For a desktop or self-built PC

  • Check that the cooler is suitable for the exact processor and mounted correctly; verify that its fan is connected and spinning, or that a liquid-cooler pump is operating.
  • Inspect for dust, blocked airflow, and damaged or obstructed fans. Confirm that the case has a clear path for intake and exhaust air.
  • If temperatures remain abnormal, inspect the thermal interface material (paste) and cooler contact. Reapply it only if you have the skill and the cooler’s installation instructions call for it.
  • Consider whether a recent cooler, case, component, or BIOS change preceded the problem. Restore BIOS defaults or install an appropriate update from the motherboard or system maker when indicated.

Intel’s troubleshooting checks are scoped to its boxed processors and direct owners of OEM systems to their manufacturer; AMD likewise emphasizes a suitable cooling solution and correct installation (Intel overheating troubleshooting, last reviewed December 17, 2025; AMD CPU cooling FAQ).

For a laptop or prebuilt system

  • Keep the manufacturer’s thermal and platform-management software enabled unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs otherwise.
  • Use the maker’s supported power or performance mode and follow its maintenance guidance for vents and fans.
  • If the system persistently overheats, shuts down, or throttles unusually, seek help from the manufacturer rather than applying desktop cooler advice to a model-specific chassis.

How to judge CPU temperatures

There is no single safe temperature target for every CPU. Intel says Tjunction max commonly falls between 100°C and 110°C, but the exact limit varies by processor. That range describes product-specific limits, not a recommended temperature for continuous operation (Intel’s Tjunction max explanation, last reviewed February 6, 2025).

Check the specification for your exact CPU and interpret readings in light of the workload, system design, and a validated sensor reading. A brief high reading under a demanding workload does not by itself establish a fault; repeated throttling, poor performance, instability, or shutdowns make cooling and configuration checks more important. Intel cautions that temperatures depend on configuration and workload, so generic operating ranges do not apply to every processor.

Choose a supported fix, not a disabled safeguard

If you have a real choice among manufacturer-supported system modes, compare sustained performance alongside temperature, noise, battery life, stability, and support—not just a short benchmark result. For a cooling replacement, first identify the fault; then check CPU socket compatibility, case and cooler clearance, cooling capacity for the processor and system, noise, installation constraints, and warranty implications. A compatible replacement cooler, fan, or fresh thermal interface material can help only when the diagnosis points to that component.

In short: leave thermal throttling enabled, use supported performance controls, and fix the cooling or configuration issue that is triggering it.
