CPU, DRAM and SSD costs are estimated to make up about 68% of the parts bill for a mainstream notebook in Q3 2026, up from about 45% in Q1 2025. That estimate, attributed to TrendForce in reporting by Sina Finance and Wccftech, puts laptop makers under pressure to raise prices, accept thinner margins or cut specifications. It does not mean those components account for 68% of a laptop’s retail price.
What the 68% figure measures
The estimate refers to the combined share of the notebook’s bill of materials (BOM)—the cost of its components attributed to CPU, DRAM and SSD. It is not the share of the retail price that goes to those parts. The reports do not state the benchmark notebook’s total BOM, so the estimate cannot be converted into a dollar amount from its retail price.
The reference is a mainstream notebook with a suggested retail price of $900 in Q1 2025. TrendForce estimates, as relayed by Sina Finance and Wccftech, put the three components at about 45% of its BOM in Q1 2025 and about 68% in Q3 2026. That is a rise of 23 percentage points in their combined share—not a stated dollar increase in component costs. The original TrendForce analysis was not independently available in the cited reporting, so these figures should be understood as reported estimates rather than independently verified measurements.

When key components take up a larger share of the parts budget, manufacturers have fewer ways to preserve a product’s economics. The three responses described in the reporting put different priorities—and costs—first:
#1 Best Overall
- FULL HD IPS DISPLAY - Enjoy vibrant, crystal-clear images with 178-degree wide-viewing angles
- AMD RYZEN 3 30 PROCESSOR - Everyday performance you can count on; Multitask, stream, game casually, and edit photos smoothly with responsive power and vibrant HDR visuals
- ENJOY UP TO 14 HOURS AND 15 MINUTES OF BATTERY LIFE - HP Fast Charge restores battery from 0 to 50% in approximately 45 minutes
- AMD RADEON 610M GRAPHICS - Experience smooth entertainment; Built for streaming and multitasking, enjoy realistic visuals and efficient performance for work and play
- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
| Response | What it prioritizes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Raise retail prices | Manufacturer profitability | Buyers pay more, and higher prices could weaken demand. |
| Absorb the added costs | Keeping retail prices down | Gross margins come under pressure. |
| Reduce specifications | Lowering the cost of the configuration | A less competitive product may be harder to sell. |
These are options described in the reporting, not proof that every manufacturer has taken any particular step. Companies may also make different choices across product lines.
Does this mean a $900 laptop could cost 80% more?
No. Sina Finance, crediting IT Home and attributing the estimate to TrendForce, reports that an 80% price increase on a comparable product would be needed by Q3 2026 to preserve the benchmark’s Q1 2025 gross margin. This is a reported margin-preservation estimate, not an observed increase across laptop prices, a forecast for every model or a claim that the $900 reference notebook now costs a specific amount.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
The 68% BOM share and the reported 80% price estimate describe different things. The first is the estimated share of component costs represented by CPU, DRAM and SSD; the second is an estimate of the retail-price change needed to preserve a particular reference product’s earlier gross margin. The reports do not provide the absolute BOM total or enough detail to calculate a new retail price for an individual laptop.
What the figures could mean for laptop buyers and the market
Higher component costs create pressure, but the effect on a specific laptop depends on which response its maker chooses. A price increase is only one possibility; a manufacturer could instead accept lower margins or alter specifications. The reports do not identify particular models, configurations or buyer-facing price changes.

Wccftech reports TrendForce forecasts a low-single-digit decline in global notebook shipments in 2027, with a potentially high-single-digit decline if CPU and DRAM prices remain elevated. These are forecasts, not realized shipment results, and the higher projected decline is conditional on component prices staying high.
The same report says production outside China is expected to move from 24% in 2025 to 21% in 2026 and could fall below 20%. Those figures are also forecasts attributed to TrendForce through Wccftech, not confirmed production outcomes.

How to read the estimate without overinterpreting it
- Read 68% as a share of the benchmark notebook’s BOM, not its $900 retail price.
- Treat the comparison as a reported estimate for Q1 2025 versus Q3 2026, not a dollar-by-dollar cost breakdown.
- Do not interpret the reported 80% margin-preserving price estimate as a universal price rise for laptops.
- Keep the shipment and production figures in the category of attributed forecasts rather than established outcomes.
