There is no single best modem-router for every Cox Internet customer. Choose a modem that Cox currently certifies for your exact model and speed tier, then decide whether you want a combined gateway or a separate router. Cox requires DOCSIS 3.0 or higher generally and DOCSIS 3.1 for Gigablast and Ultimate. For a separate router, Cox recommends Wi-Fi 6 or newer.
Can you use your own modem with Cox Internet?
Yes. Cox allows customers to purchase their own modem, provided the exact device is certified for the Cox network and supports the subscribed speed tier. Check the current Cox-certified modem list before buying. DOCSIS compatibility by itself does not prove that a particular model is certified or eligible for your tier; Cox’s list is the controlling model-level check.
Cox’s equipment guidance says DOCSIS 3.0 or higher is required for Cox Internet, while Gigablast and Ultimate require DOCSIS 3.1. Confirm that your modem meets the requirement for your service as well as appearing on Cox’s current list. These requirements do not identify a universally suitable retail model.
Do you need to buy a router too?
It depends on the equipment. A modem connects your home network to Cox service; a router shares that connection with devices, usually over Wi-Fi. Some devices combine both functions. If your modem does not include a router, you need a separate router for Wi-Fi.

Cox’s Panoramic Wifi Gateway combines modem and router functions. A retail modem-router combo can also provide both in one device, but Cox certification and speed-tier eligibility still need to be checked for its modem component.
Which Cox equipment setup fits your needs?
| Setup | May suit you if | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Cox Panoramic Wifi Gateway | You prefer one device and want Cox-managed equipment and its associated app or support features. | Current eligibility, plan and address, gateway generation, and whether the equipment is included or has a cost. Offers and terms can change. |
| Cox-certified modem plus separate Wi-Fi 6-or-newer router | You want more equipment choice, or already own a router, and are comfortable managing the setup. | Exact modem certification and tier support; whether the modem includes routing; and router coverage for your home. |
| Retail modem-router combo | You want a single retail device that combines modem and router functions. | Cox certification and plan eligibility for the exact modem model, plus its wireless generation, coverage suitability and retail-device support limits. |
| Panoramic Gateway with a coverage extension | You already use Panoramic and need to extend coverage to a harder-to-reach area. | Compatibility with your Panoramic setup, your home layout and current availability. Cox offers Panoramic Wifi Pods as an optional extension. |
What Wi-Fi router should you pair with a Cox modem?
For a separate router, Cox recommends at least Wi-Fi 6, which it identifies as a 2019 generation, to handle faster speeds. That is a baseline recommendation, not a promise that a router will deliver your plan’s full speed everywhere in your home. Wireless performance and coverage depend on the equipment, home structure, environment and the number of connected users.

- APPROVED FOR YOUR PROVIDER AND PLAN: Works with Xfinity internet plans up to 800Mbps and Cox plans up to 500Mbps. Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DirecTV, DISH, or bundled voice plans. ISP activation required after setup.
- GET THE FULL SPEED OF PLANS UP TO 800 MBPS: DOCSIS 3.0 delivers plenty of speed for HD and 4K streaming, online gaming, and video calls across your home. Actual speeds vary by plan and provider.
- AC1900 WIFI COVERAGE FOR THE WHOLE HOME: Stay connected in every room with dual-band AC1900 WiFi covering up to 1,800 sq ft and Beamforming+ for stronger signal to mobile devices. Real-world coverage depends on home size, layout, and building materials.
- WIRED CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR FASTEST DEVICES: Four Gigabit Ethernet ports keep gaming consoles, desktops, and streaming devices hardwired for the lowest latency and the most stable connection in your home.
Choose a router based on the coverage you need as well as its Wi-Fi generation. Cox advises placing the modem or router in a central location. If you use Panoramic and have dead zones, consider whether the optional Pods fit your setup; placement and coverage are separate from whether a modem is certified for your plan.

- Certification and tier fit: Verify the exact modem model against Cox’s current list and confirm support for your subscribed speed tier.
- Device roles: Confirm whether the modem includes a router. If it does not, budget for a separate router.
- Coverage: Match the router and its placement to your home rather than assuming a newer Wi-Fi generation guarantees whole-home coverage.
- Maintenance and support: Cox says customers using their own equipment are responsible for certification, security, matching the tier, upgrades and device troubleshooting when Cox confirms its service is working. Cox states that only devices purchased or rented directly from Cox are supported by Cox Customer Support. Bring-your-own equipment also does not include Panoramic’s associated app and security features.
- Total cost and account terms: Check current equipment charges, inclusion, offers and eligibility for your address and account. Those terms can change.
