Short answer: A COVID-19 variant is a SARS-CoV-2 viral genome with one or more mutations. A lineage is a related family of viruses descended from a common ancestor. Strain is often used informally, but the official CDC definitions consulted do not establish it as a precise opposite of “variant.”
That distinction matters because a genetic difference does not automatically mean a virus is more contagious, causes more severe disease, or evades immunity. Those conclusions require evidence and can change as surveillance develops.
The precise difference in one view
| Term | What it describes | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Mutation | One change in the virus’s genetic code. | That the change alters transmission, severity, immunity, tests, vaccines, or treatments. |
| Variant | A viral genome that may contain one or more mutations. | That the genome represents a new public-health threat. |
| Lineage | A group of closely related viruses sharing a common ancestor. | That every member has the same clinical or epidemiological behavior. |
| Sublineage | A lineage descended from a parent lineage. | That it deserves a separate risk category. |
| Strain | An everyday term whose meaning varies by speaker and context. | A universally agreed SARS-CoV-2 boundary separating it from “variant.” |
| VUM, VOI, VOC | World Health Organization (WHO) public-health tracking categories. | A basic synonym for mutation, variant, or lineage. |
The CDC’s SARS-CoV-2 Variant Classifications and Definitions, updated September 1, 2023, states: “A variant is a viral genome (genetic code) that may contain one or more mutations.” The same framework defines mutation and lineage separately. It does not present “strain” as a contrasting technical category with one universal threshold.

A mutation is a single change in SARS-CoV-2’s genetic sequence. Viruses copy themselves repeatedly, and copying can introduce changes. A sequence may therefore differ from an earlier sequence at one position or many positions.

“Mutation” describes the genetic event or difference, not its consequence. A mutation can have no measurable effect, change how a viral protein behaves, or matter only when combined with other changes. Finding a mutation in a sequence is not evidence on its own that infections will spread faster or that illness will be more severe.
Why one mutation rarely answers the practical question
Public-health decisions concern outcomes: how efficiently a virus spreads, how well prior immunity protects against disease, whether diagnostics still detect it, and whether treatments or vaccines may be affected. Laboratory findings can suggest a possibility, but those outcomes require epidemiological, clinical, and surveillance evidence.
Researchers also have to distinguish a genuine biological signal from sampling effects. A mutation may appear frequently simply because many sequences came from one outbreak, region, or time period. A change seen in a laboratory experiment may not produce the same result in people. That is why sequence databases, case data, clinical studies, and testing information are interpreted together rather than treating a single genetic finding as a verdict.
What “variant” means
In the CDC definition, a variant is a viral genome that may contain one or more mutations. The word identifies a genetic version of SARS-CoV-2. It does not, by itself, rank that version as mild, dangerous, dominant, or important.
News reports often use “variant” for any named or newly detected sequence group. That is understandable shorthand, but readers should look for the additional information: which lineage was detected, where and when it was observed, and what evidence exists about its behavior.
Variant is not a synonym for “more dangerous”
A variant can be genetically different without causing more severe disease or escaping immunity. Conversely, a variant may attract monitoring because preliminary evidence suggests a possible effect even before the effect is confirmed. Classifications are therefore evidence-based assessments, not conclusions drawn from the word “variant” alone.
The same caution applies to the word “new.” A newly reported variant may be newly recognized rather than newly evolved. It may also be a descendant of a lineage that has circulated for some time. A report should identify the sequence collection date and the date of analysis so readers can tell what “new” means.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat a lineage and sublineage mean
A lineage is an evolutionary branch: a group of closely related viruses with a common ancestor. A sublineage is a descendant branch considered in relation to its parent. The terms describe ancestry and relatedness rather than a guaranteed difference in symptoms or risk.
Lineages are commonly named through the Pango system. Its hierarchy works like a family tree: descendant names preserve their relationship to parent lineages. A sequence can therefore have a precise lineage name even when its public-health significance is still being evaluated.

“Descendant” does not mean “more severe.” It means that the sequence sits on a later branch of the inferred family tree. A sublineage can become common, remain rare, or disappear; the name itself does not predict which outcome will occur.
Why a lineage can have several labels
Different systems answer different questions. Pango assigns lineage names for evolutionary ancestry. Nextclade groups sequences by genetic relatedness into clades and can provide another classification view. WHO may use Greek-letter labels for broad groups such as Omicron and may apply a public-health status to a lineage or group of lineages. A WHO tracking table can display a Pango lineage alongside a Nextstrain clade; those labels are not interchangeable.
CDC notes that SARS-CoV-2 can be classified in multiple ways depending on context. A laboratory report may emphasize a sequence or clade, an evolutionary analysis may use a Pango lineage, and a public-health bulletin may use a WHO or U.S. assessment category. These are not competing names for exactly the same purpose. They are layers of description that can be reported together.
Where “strain” fits—and why the word causes confusion
In ordinary conversation, “strain” may be used to mean a variant, lineage, or a virus believed to behave differently. The CDC definitions consulted clearly define mutation, variant, lineage, and sublineage, but they do not supply one sharp SARS-CoV-2 definition that makes “strain” the formal opposite of “variant.”
That means statements such as “a variant is genetic, while a strain is always a more dangerous version” go beyond the cited definitions. The safest wording is to explain what the speaker means. If the subject is a genetic sequence, say “variant” or name the lineage. If the subject is ancestry, say “lineage.” If a source uses “strain,” preserve the source’s wording only with enough context to show that it is informal or source-specific.
A practical editing rule
Replace an unexplained use of “strain” with the specific concept intended:
- Use mutation for one genetic change.
- Use variant for a genome carrying one or more changes.
- Use lineage or sublineage for an evolutionary branch.
- Use the relevant WHO category when discussing an official monitoring or risk designation.
- Retain strain only when quoting or clearly attributing a source that uses the term.
How genetic names differ from public-health categories
Pango and Nextclade classify genetic relatedness. WHO’s VUM, VOI, and VOC labels are public-health tracking categories. They are assigned after assessing evidence about potential expansion or replacement, increased circulation that could produce new waves, and whether public-health actions might need adjustment.
These labels therefore answer different questions:
- “What is this virus related to?” Use a lineage or clade system such as Pango or Nextclade.
- “Is this genetic group being watched for a possible public-health impact?” Look for the applicable WHO category or a national-agency classification.
- “What is happening in my location?” Check the surveillance authority for that geography and date.
A lineage name is not automatically a WHO risk category. A virus can have a Pango designation without being a WHO variant under monitoring, of interest, or of concern. Conversely, one public-health designation may cover a group of related lineages.
What VUM, VOI, and VOC mean
WHO revised its SARS-CoV-2 tracking system and working definitions effective March 15, 2023. The change was intended in part to track Omicron sublineages and new threats more independently. The categories are assessment tools, not synonyms for every virus with a genetic difference.

Variant under monitoring (VUM)
A VUM is a WHO tracking designation for a variant that merits continued observation based on available evidence. The label does not mean that a confirmed increase in severity or transmission has been established.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Variant of interest (VOI)
A VOI indicates a higher level of public-health evaluation than routine sequence naming. WHO considers evidence about characteristics such as expansion, replacement, or possible effects on public-health measures. The category can change as evidence improves.
Variant of concern (VOC)
A VOC is a WHO designation used when evidence indicates a public-health impact significant enough to warrant the strongest level of attention in that framework. It remains an assessment category, not a permanent biological label.
Exact lists and classifications can differ between WHO and U.S. agencies because impact may vary by location. Always identify the organization, geography, and date attached to a designation.
A dated example of current tracking
WHO’s variant-tracking page listed PQ.16.1.1, NB.1.8.1, XFG, and BA.3.2 as variants under monitoring as of July 27, 2026. The page pairs several Pango lineage names with Nextstrain clades and records designation or risk-evaluation dates.
This is a dated status snapshot, not a statement that these are the only variants circulating, that they are dominant everywhere, or that they represent a current percentage of infections. Surveillance pages change as sequences and evidence accumulate. To describe a present situation, consult the latest release rather than carrying this list forward without its date.
How to read a COVID-19 variant report
- Identify the object being named. Is the report discussing a mutation, a complete genome, a Pango lineage, a Nextstrain clade, or a WHO category?
- Check the date. A designation and a prevalence estimate are time-dependent. Record the collection period and the publication or update date.
- Check the geography. A classification by WHO, the United States, or another national authority may not have the same practical meaning in every location.
- Separate genetic evidence from outcome evidence. A sequence difference is not the same as demonstrated changes in transmission, severity, immune protection, diagnostics, vaccines, or treatment.
- Look for the level of certainty. “Under monitoring,” “preliminary,” and “confirmed” describe different evidence states. Do not turn an early signal into a settled conclusion.
- Keep the labels in their proper systems. Do not describe a Pango lineage as a WHO category unless the relevant authority has actually assigned that status.
Common mistakes and the accurate correction
| Mistake | Why it is misleading | Better wording |
|---|---|---|
| “Every variant is a new strain.” | Official definitions do not establish a universal boundary making the terms equivalent. | “This is a variant; the source uses ‘strain’ informally” or name the lineage. |
| “The mutation makes it more dangerous.” | A genetic change alone does not demonstrate a change in outcomes. | “The sequence contains this mutation; its public-health effect is being evaluated.” |
| “The lineage is the risk category.” | Lineage systems describe ancestry, while WHO categories describe assessed relevance. | State the lineage and the separate WHO or national designation. |
| “A WHO-listed variant is prevalent everywhere.” | Designation does not equal global prevalence. | Give the surveillance geography, period, and measure. |
| “The 2023 Omicron percentage is current.” | It was a historical sequence-submission statistic. | Label it as a March 2023 historical figure, not a present infection estimate. |
How to handle the historical Omicron statistic
In a March 16, 2023 statement, WHO said Omicron viruses accounted for more than 98% of publicly available sequences since February 2022. That figure described sequence submissions through the statement’s publication period. It was not a real-time estimate of infections, clinical severity, or the proportion of cases in every country. Any use of the statistic should retain that historical qualification.
Sequence submissions are also not a census of every infection. Countries differ in how much genomic sequencing they perform and submit, and the delay between collection and publication can vary. The statistic is useful historical context for Omicron’s place in submitted sequences, but it should never be presented as a current case share without a newer, clearly defined measure.
Why classifications can change
Variant assessment is provisional because the evidence arrives in stages. Laboratories may first identify a sequence difference, then observe whether the lineage expands. Epidemiologists assess transmission patterns; clinical researchers examine disease outcomes; immunologists and laboratory scientists study antibody recognition; diagnostic and treatment experts evaluate possible effects on tests and therapies.

As those data are added, an agency can assign, change, or remove a monitoring category. A changed label does not necessarily mean the virus itself suddenly changed; it may reflect better sampling, a different geographic context, or stronger evidence about an existing lineage.
What the terms mean for testing, vaccines, and treatment
The words “variant” and “lineage” do not by themselves tell you whether a diagnostic test works, whether a vaccine remains protective, or whether a treatment should be changed. Those questions require product-specific and agency-specific evidence.
- Diagnostics: determine whether the relevant test targets a part of the virus that remains detectable and review current guidance for the test.
- Vaccines: consult recommendations that account for circulating variants and the population being advised; do not infer protection from a lineage name alone.
- Treatments: use current clinical and public-health guidance, because effectiveness can depend on viral characteristics, timing, and patient factors.
A sequence label is a starting point for surveillance, not a personal medical instruction. If you are ill or at higher risk, follow current advice from a qualified clinician or public-health authority rather than trying to select care from a variant name.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a report should include for clarity
A useful report identifies at least four pieces of context: the genetic label, the classification system, the place, and the date. For example, it might say that samples belonged to a named Pango lineage, were grouped in a particular Nextstrain clade, and were listed by WHO as a VUM on a stated date. Without those details, readers may mistake an ancestry label for a risk assessment or assume a local finding applies worldwide.

Reports should also distinguish “detected” from “common.” Detection means a sequence was found. Frequency requires a denominator, a defined time period, and information about sampling. “Replacing” a previous lineage refers to an observed pattern in a particular surveillance setting, not proof that every infection or country has the same pattern.
How to write the distinction clearly
A precise sentence can carry the whole idea: “The sample belongs to the X lineage, a genetic branch of SARS-CoV-2; WHO lists that lineage as a variant under monitoring as of [date].” This separates ancestry from public-health status and preserves the date.
For a general audience, define the words in this order: mutation, variant, lineage, then any WHO category. Explain “strain” only after those terms are clear. That order prevents readers from treating a casual headline word as a formal classification.
Bottom line for readers
“Variant” identifies a SARS-CoV-2 genome with one or more mutations. “Lineage” identifies its place in the virus’s family tree, and “sublineage” identifies a descendant branch. “Strain” is often informal in SARS-CoV-2 reporting rather than a universally defined counterpart to “variant.” The public-health importance of any named virus depends on evidence about transmission, severity, immunity, diagnostics, vaccines, treatments, location, and time—not on the label alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a COVID-19 variant the same thing as a strain?
Not necessarily. “Variant” has a clear CDC definition for a viral genome with one or more mutations. “Strain” is used inconsistently in ordinary reporting, and the CDC definitions do not establish one universal boundary that makes it the formal opposite of “variant.”

Is a lineage more dangerous than a variant?
No. A lineage describes ancestry: a group of closely related viruses with a common ancestor. Its name does not establish severity, transmissibility, immune escape, or treatment response.
What is the difference between a mutation and a variant?
A mutation is one change in the viral genetic code. A variant is a viral genome that may contain one or more mutations. A mutation can have no measurable effect, so neither term alone tells you how the virus behaves.
What is a sublineage?
A sublineage is a lineage that descends from a parent lineage. It is a nested branch in an evolutionary classification, not automatically a separate public-health risk category.
Recommended Free Tools
What do VUM, VOI, and VOC mean?
They are WHO tracking designations: variant under monitoring, variant of interest, and variant of concern. They reflect assessed public-health relevance and can change as evidence develops; they are not synonyms for every genetically different virus.
Why do WHO, CDC, Pango and Nextclade use different names?
The systems answer different questions. Pango names evolutionary lineages, Nextclade groups genetically related sequences into clades, and WHO or national agencies assign public-health statuses. One report may properly show more than one label for the same sequence.
Does a WHO-listed variant mean it is spreading everywhere?
No. A listing is a dated assessment category, not a global prevalence estimate. Check the surveillance geography, sampling period, and latest update before making a claim about circulation.
Are the variants under monitoring on July 27, 2026 still the current list?
That list is dated. WHO listed PQ.16.1.1, NB.1.8.1, XFG, and BA.3.2 as variants under monitoring on July 27, 2026, but classifications and surveillance snapshots can change. Use the latest WHO release for a present-tense claim.
Does a variant name tell me whether my test or vaccine works?
No. Test performance, vaccine protection, and treatment effectiveness require product-specific and current agency evidence. Do not infer personal medical advice from a lineage or variant name alone.
The Bottom Line
In brief: a mutation is a genetic change, a variant is a genome carrying one or more changes, and a lineage is an ancestry branch. “Strain” is often an informal term rather than a universally defined counterpart to “variant.” Public-health categories such as VUM, VOI, and VOC add an evidence-based assessment; they do not replace the genetic names. Always check the organization, location, evidence, and date.
