If you see unsupported_country_region_territory, request_forbidden, or “Country, region, or territory not supported,” first check whether you are using ChatGPT or the OpenAI API, then consult that service’s official supported-location list. If your location is listed and the error continues, contact OpenAI support; the official documentation reviewed does not specify an error-specific fix or confirm that changing network settings will resolve it.
Check the supported-location list for the service you’re using
ChatGPT web and mobile access and the OpenAI API have separate official location references. Check the list for the product surface that returned the error rather than assuming that one list covers both.
- ChatGPT web or mobile: consult the OpenAI Help Center’s ChatGPT Supported Countries page.
- OpenAI API: consult the API documentation’s Supported countries and territories page.
Use the live pages rather than a copied country list: availability can change. The ChatGPT Help Center page displayed “Updated: 2 months ago” when accessed on October 7, 2026, but that relative date may change.
What the country error does—and does not—tell you
The wording “Country, region, or territory not supported” appears in public coverage alongside unsupported_country_region_territory and request_forbidden. That confirms the terms are used together in reports of the issue; it does not establish how OpenAI determines location or why a particular request was rejected.

The official location pages establish availability rules, but do not document this error’s exact detection mechanism or a guaranteed remedy. In particular, they do not confirm that the decision is based only on an IP address, or that changing a VPN, proxy, router, cookies, account details, or cloud deployment region will fix it. Avoid treating those suggestions as verified troubleshooting steps.
How to fix “Country Not Supported” without guessing
- Identify the product surface. Note whether the error appeared in ChatGPT web, the ChatGPT mobile app, or an API request.
- Check the matching official list. Use the ChatGPT Help Center list for ChatGPT, or the API documentation list for API access.
- If your location is not listed, don’t try to bypass the restriction. OpenAI warns that accessing or offering access to ChatGPT from outside its supported locations may result in an account being blocked or suspended. Do not use a VPN, proxy, false account location, or another method to circumvent geographic availability.
- If your location is listed, gather details and contact support. Record the exact error text, product surface, time it occurred, country where you were physically using the service, and relevant network context. Then contact the provider through its official support channel. This is practical information to include; the official pages do not prescribe an error-specific diagnostic checklist.
For API developers: don’t infer an unverified cause
The API has its own supported-location reference, so check that page when an API request fails. The documentation cited here does not establish the precise status-code semantics for this error, rules for egress-IP checks, how deployment region affects eligibility, or the provider’s geolocation method. The error alone is not enough to conclude that moving workloads, changing an IP address, or altering a proxy configuration will resolve the issue.

If the API location is listed and the error persists, preserve the response text and timestamp, note the physical location and relevant request or network context, and contact official support. The available official location documentation cannot diagnose an individual account, request, or network.
