In Counter-Strike 2, an entry fragger leads a Terrorist-side attack and takes space, an anchor is the Counter-Terrorist assigned to hold a particular bombsite, and an AWPer uses the high-impact AWP to create threat from carefully chosen positions. These are tactical responsibilities, not locked character classes: one player can change jobs by side, map, economy, or round plan.
The distinctions matter because CS2 is a team game built around incomplete information. The entry starts contact, the anchor keeps a site defensible until help arrives, and the AWPer controls angles that opponents must respect. Understanding those jobs makes professional matches easier to follow and gives a stack a clearer way to divide practice and communication.
What the three roles mean at a glance
Role names describe what a player is expected to accomplish in a particular setup. They do not appear as formal classes in the game, and teams do not have to assign all three permanently. A rifler may entry on one round and lurk on the next; an anchor may rotate early after receiving information; an AWPer may buy a rifle when the economy or strategy calls for it.
| Role | Most visible side | Primary responsibility | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry fragger (space taker) | Terrorist (T) attacks | Lead contact, gain access to a site or area, and create room for teammates | Taking the first dangerous engagement before all information is known |
| Anchor | Counter-Terrorist (CT) defense | Defend a designated A or B site through kills, positioning, or delay | Being isolated during a late, coordinated execute |
| AWPer | Both sides | Use the AWP’s one-shot threat to control angles, find openings, and support the plan | Losing an expensive, high-impact weapon or becoming predictable |
A common CT arrangement on a three-lane map uses two anchors, two rotators, and a floating AWPer. One frequently used T-side pattern has a three-player pack—often an aggressive rifler, the in-game leader, and the AWPer—plus two lurkers. Those are examples of workable structures, not a universal lineup.

What does an entry fragger do?
The entry fragger is usually the aggressive rifler at the front of a T-side push. The job is broader than getting the first kill. The player takes the first contested space, makes defenders react, and gives the rest of the group a route into the bombsite or a valuable piece of information about where the defense is positioned.
Creating access and information
When an entry crosses a choke point, defenders have to reveal themselves by shooting, moving, or using utility. Even a failed duel can tell the team which angle is occupied and which grenades have been spent. A successful entry removes a defender and gives teammates physical room to trade, plant, or clear the next section of the site.
That is why “space taker” is a useful alternative description. The entry’s value includes the territory gained for teammates, not only the number in the kill feed. A player who dies after forcing two defenders out of position may still have completed the first phase of the attack if the pack can trade the death and continue.

How an entry round usually unfolds
- Prepare the route. The caller and support players choose a lane, clear likely close positions, and line up flashes or smokes. The entry should know which corner is first and who is positioned to trade.
- Make contact. Move through the opening decisively enough that defenders cannot isolate each teammate. Clearing one angle at a time gives the following player a predictable place to aim.
- Convert the space. After the first duel, continue clearing, call the defender’s location, and make room for the bomb carrier or the next trader. Stopping after one kill can leave the team exposed in the choke point.
- Pass responsibility. Once the site is secured, the former entry may become a post-plant player, a flank watcher, or a rifle supporting the AWPer. The label applies to the task in the attack, not every second of the round.
What makes the role difficult
- Timing: Entering before the flash or smoke arrives turns a planned trade into an isolated duel.
- Crosshair discipline: The player must clear likely threats quickly without exposing an un-cleared side.
- Communication: A short call such as “close left, one site” can be more useful than a long description after death.
- Acceptance of risk: The entry often has the highest early exposure. A low kill total does not automatically mean the role was played badly if the team gained access and traded effectively.
What is an anchor in CS2?
An anchor is a CT defender assigned primarily to one bombsite. The player may hold A or B alone while teammates watch other areas or gather information. The anchor’s task is to survive, score a kill, or delay the attackers long enough for rotators to arrive and make the defense stronger.
“The anchor is the player whose primary task is to defend the A or B bombsite, either with kills or by delaying the onrushing Ts.”

Why an anchor can be quiet and still essential
Many rounds give an anchor little action for 40 seconds. The attackers may be probing another lane, holding utility, or waiting for a teammate. The anchor still has to remain ready, avoid giving away the site for free, and report sounds or spotted utility. When the execute finally arrives, the same player may face several opponents in quick succession.
Recommended Free Tools
Good anchoring is therefore measured by time bought and information preserved as well as kills. A fall-back position that keeps the player alive can be better than a heroic peek that gives the attackers a free rifle and removes the site’s only defender.
Typical anchor decisions
- Hold or fight: Take an engagement when you have a favorable angle, a teammate’s flash, or a clear chance to damage the entry. Otherwise, fall back to a position from which you can continue delaying.
- Spend utility for time: A molotov, smoke, or grenade can force attackers to wait, change their route, or expose themselves while rotating teammates arrive.
- Call the hit early: Reporting multiple footsteps, grenades, or a lost forward position lets rotators leave the opposite site before the bomb is planted.
- Protect the retake: If the site cannot be held, staying alive with a kit or a rifle may be more valuable than dying for one extra damage point.
Exact anchor positions depend on the map, the team’s utility, and whether the player has a rotator nearby. A position that works on one site can be too exposed on another, so “anchor” names the responsibility rather than a fixed corner.
What does an AWPer do?
An AWPer is the team’s primary user of the AWP. The rifle gives the player a powerful long-range threat, but owning it does not prescribe a single style. Some AWPers take aggressive positions and challenge contested areas; others hold distance, preserve the weapon, and punish opponents who cross an exposed angle.

CT-side AWPer responsibilities
On CT, an AWPer can look for an opening kill, support an anchor’s site, or control a lane that the attackers need to cross. The position should change often enough that opponents cannot pre-aim one angle every round. If attackers block the sightline with smoke, the AWPer can reposition, use utility to support a teammate, or hold a different route rather than stare at an unusable angle.

Attackers may delay a peek, spend a smoke, or choose another lane because they know the AWP could be watching. That pressure is part of the role even when the player does not fire.
T-side AWPer responsibilities
On T, the AWPer may travel with the main pack to take map control or hold a long angle while riflers clear close positions. The player must balance being useful in the opening phase with staying alive for the execute and post-plant. A missed shot in the front of a push can leave the team short on firepower, while an overly passive position can give defenders too much freedom.
Changing the style without changing the role
Aggressive and passive AWPing are both legitimate. The choice should follow the round plan, spawn positions, utility, and opponent tendencies. A player can take an early duel one round, then hold a deeper angle the next to punish defenders who expect the repeat. The constant is the responsibility to create sniper threat and make the rifle’s positioning serve the team.
How the roles work together
Counter-Strike rewards teams that turn partial information into a coordinated decision. The entry creates the first reliable picture of the defense. The anchor keeps a site from collapsing instantly and buys time for that picture to reach the rest of the team. The AWPer changes which routes are safe by threatening a decisive shot. Rotators connect those jobs by moving when information justifies it.

A common CT structure
In one classic three-lane setup, two players anchor the bombsites, two rotators support nearby areas or move between sites, and the AWPer floats to the angle that needs the most impact. The float does not mean wandering without a plan: the AWPer should respond to early information, preserve a useful line of sight, and avoid leaving both sites without support.
A common T structure
A three-player pack can combine an entry, an in-game leader, and an AWPer, while two lurkers hold or pressure other parts of the map. The pack supplies numbers for the initial contact; lurkers prevent CTs from rotating freely and can exploit defenders who over-rotate. Teams may instead run defaults, split attacks, or give the AWPer a separate mission, so the example is a starting framework rather than a rule.
Information is the shared objective
Early information lets a team decide whether to accelerate, pause, rotate, or save utility. Entries collect it by making contact. Anchors collect it by seeing or hearing an execute and surviving long enough to report it. AWPers collect and deny it through threatening sightlines. The roles are different ways of shaping the same information problem.
Entry fragger, anchor, and AWPer compared
| Comparison point | Entry fragger | Anchor | AWPer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Usual assignment | Leads a T-side attack | Defends one CT bombsite | Primary AWP user on either side |
| When the role is most tested | At first contact and during site entry | During a late, coordinated site hit | When controlling key angles or finding an opening |
| Success looks like | Space, information, trades, or an opening kill | Time, survival, kills, or a delayed plant | Threat, opening damage, control, and weapon preservation |
| Typical positioning | Front of the attacking group | Dedicated site positions with fallback options | Long or high-value sightlines, adjusted by plan |
| Can the job change? | Yes; may lurk or support after entry | Yes; may rotate when information demands it | Yes; may rifle or change aggression with the economy and strategy |
How to learn a role without treating it as a permanent label
Start with one responsibility
Choose a narrow goal for practice: entry players can focus on trading and clearing the first two angles; anchors can practice delaying while staying alive; AWPers can work on changing positions after each shot or smoke. A single measurable behavior is easier to review than a vague demand to “play better.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReview decisions, not only kills
- For an entry, ask whether the team could trade the death and whether the call communicated the defender’s position.
- For an anchor, ask how much time and utility the defense gained before the site was lost.
- For an AWPer, ask whether the chosen angle affected the opponents and whether the weapon survived when the duel was unfavorable.
This review keeps the role tied to team outcomes. A scoreboard can miss a delayed plant, a forced rotation, or a space-taking death that enabled the round.

Use communication that matches the job
Entries should give immediate location and numbers. Anchors should report the scale and timing of pressure so rotators know whether to commit. AWPers should announce their lane, whether a smoke blocks them, and when they are repositioning. Clear, short calls prevent teammates from assuming that a silent player has the same information they do.
What these labels do not tell you
They do not reveal a player’s rank, aim quality, personality, or exact position on every map. They also do not guarantee a five-person lineup with one permanent entry, one permanent anchor, and one permanent AWPer. Economy, side, spawn, map geometry, opponent habits, and the in-game leader’s plan can all change the assignment.
Valve’s learning resources use related terms such as backup, support, and defender, which reinforces that teams can distribute work in several ways. Those resources include CS:GO-era material, so they are useful for role vocabulary but should not be treated as proof of a current CS2 mechanic. Likewise, Valve’s March 18, 2026 update introduced limited map guides in Competitive and Retakes, with a five-round-per-half default and a 30-node limit; those are practice-tool parameters, not official definitions of entry, anchor, or AWPer roles.
Bottom line for watching or playing CS2
When you watch a round, follow the responsibility rather than the label. Notice who takes the first space, who is alone protecting a site, and where the AWP creates a threat that changes the opponent’s route. When you play, agree on those responsibilities before the round, trade the entry, give the anchor time to call, and let the AWPer’s position support the plan. The best teams treat roles as coordinated jobs that can flex when the information changes.
