A 2026 study found that northern bobwhite in southern Indiana that more strongly selected roost sites near woody cover had higher estimated survival through fall and winter. The result gives habitat managers evidence that dense shrub-like refuge may matter, but it does not show that adding woody vegetation will increase Georgia’s bobwhite population: the study took place in Indiana, observed existing habitat choices, and did not test a planting intervention.
Why the finding matters in Georgia
The bird at issue is the northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus), commonly called bobwhite quail. The University of Georgia reported on October 12, 2026, that Georgia’s bobwhite population has fallen by almost 90% since the 1960s, attributing that estimate to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. An earlier DNR management publication reported a decline of more than 70% between 1966 and 1998, using U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Breeding Bird Survey data. These estimates describe different time spans and should not be treated as interchangeable. UGA Today’s 2026 report and the Georgia DNR’s 2002 publication provide the respective context.
The finding adds a specific point to a broader habitat problem: bobwhite need a varied landscape, not a single vegetation type. A patchwork of herbaceous and woody cover can provide different resources and edges, while woody growth that becomes too dense may shade out useful herbaceous plants. The paper, “Northern Bobwhite roost site selection influences survival during the non-breeding season,” was published in Oecologia on August 7, 2026. Researchers studied bobwhite on public land at Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area in Greene County, southern Indiana—not Georgia. Across two fall/winter seasons, 2020–21 and 2021–22, they tracked 169 radio-tagged birds and recorded 720 nocturnal roost sites. The survival analysis included 132 birds after excluding birds killed by hunting or vehicle collisions.

The researchers found that birds selected roost sites near woody cover, and that stronger individual selection for woody cover was positively associated with survival. Estimated mean survival over 181 days was 0.60 for birds with the strongest selection for woody cover. This is an estimate for that study population and period, not a forecast for Georgia or a survival rate guaranteed by adding cover. The published study reports the methods and results.
What “woody cover” means
Here, woody cover does not mean converting open habitat into forest. It means dense shrub, briar, young-tree, or overgrown fence-row vegetation that can function as refuge near a roost. Corresponding author Justin Hill described it to UGA as “a patch of any woody-stem vegetation that’s really kind of thick, nasty, difficult that you wouldn’t want to walk into.” Its usefulness depends on how much cover exists and where it sits in relation to other habitat.

Hill also offered an illustrative rule of thumb: “A person standing nearly anywhere in good quail habitat should be able to face in several directions, throw a softball and reach a patch of woody cover.” That is an attributed image for thinking about distributed cover, not a quantified spacing prescription from the study.
What land managers can—and cannot—take from it
The study was observational: it connected birds’ roost-site choices with survival during fall and winter in one Indiana landscape. It did not experimentally add shrubs or trees, measure a subsequent rise in population size, or establish that every type or amount of woody vegetation benefits bobwhite. Its result supports considering distributed woody refuge as one component of locally appropriate habitat planning, alongside herbaceous cover and a suitable balance of vegetation.

For Georgia landowners, site conditions matter before choosing a restoration approach. UGA Cooperative Extension’s guidance on shortleaf pine savanna and woodland management discusses suitability in relation to site, canopy, access, and the potential to use prescribed fire. Those considerations help determine whether a savanna or woodland restoration is feasible; they do not turn this Indiana survival association into proof of a Georgia population response. The paper’s authors call for research across additional landscapes and life stages, as well as manipulative studies that can test cause and effect. For now, the defensible takeaway is narrower than the headline: bobwhite in this Indiana study that more strongly selected woody cover for nocturnal roosting had higher estimated survival, and that finding reinforces the potential value of a well-arranged habitat mosaic.
