The HTVRont D2 could suit a small apparel business that prints transfers often, but the available review does not show that it can pay its owner’s rent. It gives no sales figures, break-even calculation or operating-cost model. At the review’s listed price of $2,850, the decision depends on how frequently you can use the machine—and whether you’re prepared to manage its materials, upkeep and film-feed risk.
What the HTVRont D2 does
The D2 is a direct-to-film (DTF) printer: it prints a design onto transfer film, which is then prepared and heat-pressed onto a garment. Unlike a workflow that prints directly onto clothing, DTF produces a transfer first.
James Bricknell’s CNET review, published September 10, 2026, describes a process that prints the image and a white-ink layer onto heatproof film, applies TPU powder while the ink is wet, then heats the transfer to bond the powder to the ink before pressing it onto fabric. The review describes the finished transfer as stretchy, more vibrant than sublimation and thinner than vinyl. Those are the reviewer’s assessments, not results from a controlled comparison.

What you need besides the printer
The printer is only one part of the production setup. The workflow described in the review also requires transfer film, white ink, TPU powder and a way to heat the transfer so the powder bonds to the ink. A heat press is needed to apply the prepared design to clothing. The review calls the curing oven in its tested bundle essential to melting the TPU powder onto the ink; it also mentions an available heat-press bundle.

The review listed the D2 at $2,850 at HTVRont when published and described its tested bundle as including an oven. Price and bundle contents can change, so confirm the current price, included equipment and compatibility of consumables with the seller before buying. The review does not provide a complete ongoing-cost breakdown for film, ink, powder, electricity, garments, failed prints or labor.

Color and wash observations
Bricknell reported excellent color reproduction and said the transfers stayed vibrant after dozens of washes, while noting that film eventually peels. The review does not provide a controlled wash protocol or independent durability test data, so treat this as the reviewer’s experience rather than a guaranteed lifespan.

Ink care and downtime
The D2 can feed, clean and maintain itself while powered, even when it is not connected to a PC. Its white-ink mixer regularly agitates the ink, which the reviewer says helps prevent clogs. In the reviewer’s use, daily printing avoided clogs. After a week without use, however, the printer required several cleaning cycles and a large test print before white ink flowed properly again. That matters if you expect to print only occasionally: a machine that can maintain itself still may need recovery work after sitting idle.

The reviewer found that the film roll could shift when cut. If the film lifts, the print head may catch it and smear the ink, wasting the print and potentially damaging the head. This makes careful handling and monitoring of the film feed important, particularly during cutting. The reviewer also wanted a built-in reprint button for repeated batches; the review does not establish that such a feature is available.

Who might find the D2 worthwhile?
The review positions the D2 as a tool for a small business printing frequently, rather than a casual hobby purchase. Frequent use may make owning the workflow more practical, but the article does not quantify how many transfers you would need to sell to recover the equipment or supply costs. You would need your own estimates for sales volume, selling price, materials, labor, workspace and maintenance to judge whether the investment fits your business.
The reviewer reported successful adhesion to cleaned real and vegan leather, and less reliable results on wood. These are specific observations, not guarantees for every material, finish or product. Test a material and process before promising customers a particular result.

Buy a printer, order transfers or consider a larger machine?

The review does not establish the costs or volumes at which one option becomes cheaper.
Can this printer pay rent?
The review’s rent framing is a hook, not an income claim. It reports the reviewer’s product observations and a purchase price, but supplies no evidence about customer demand, sales, margins, recurring expenses or owner earnings. The D2 may be worth evaluating if you already have regular orders and can account for the full production workflow. For sporadic jobs, the review’s service alternative may avoid a large equipment commitment; for sustained output of hundreds of transfers a day, it points toward considering a larger commercial machine.
