Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) raised its 2026 GDP growth forecast to 4.5%–5.5% on 11 August 2026, from 2.0%–4.0%. Growth could beat the top of that range if global AI spending remains stronger than expected and construction activity continues to add capacity, but the available evidence does not yet establish an above-forecast outcome.
What Singapore’s 2026 GDP forecast means
The revised range is an outlook, not a measurement of GDP already produced. Bernama reported the upgrade as an MTI decision on 11 August 2026. The change signals that officials now expect materially stronger expansion than they did earlier in the year.

Beating the range would mean the economy grows faster than the strongest outcome MTI currently projects. Neither MTI nor Bernama has said that this is the central case.
Why AI expenditure lifted the outlook
A global spending channel
MTI cited a stronger global outlook for AI expenditure when it raised the forecast. Singapore can benefit through demand for cloud services, advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, engineering, software, logistics and professional services connected to AI investment. Those channels can raise exports, business investment and productivity when projects move from budgets into operating facilities and paying customers.

The published material does not quantify how many percentage points AI spending contributes to Singapore’s GDP forecast. It also does not provide a separate estimate for data-centre output. Readers should therefore treat AI as the stated growth driver, not as a measured standalone share of national growth.
AI is also a policy priority
In a 24 August 2026 speech, Minister for Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry) Dr Tan See Leng said, “This is why establishing Singapore as a leader in adapting and shaping a world disrupted by AI is now a national priority.” The statement points to a two-part strategy: attract AI-related activity and help local firms adapt their operations as the technology changes competition and work.

How construction supports the expansion
MTI’s sector table records construction growth of 4.5% in 2024 and 4.9% in the first quarter of 2025. Those gains provide evidence that construction has recently been expanding and can support activity through contracts, materials, equipment, engineering and employment.

A project pipeline can shift between quarters, and a strong comparison with a weaker earlier period can make a growth rate look larger. Construction is best understood as a second support for the upgraded outlook rather than a guaranteed explanation for any future upside surprise.

What could push growth above the forecast range?
- AI demand stays stronger for longer: More corporate and public-sector investment could increase Singapore’s exports, capital spending and high-value services beyond assumptions embedded in the forecast.
- Projects convert quickly into output: Faster commissioning of facilities and related engineering work would bring investment benefits forward.
- Construction momentum persists: Continued public and private building activity could add to domestic demand while supporting industries capture follow-on work.
- Productivity improves alongside adoption: Firms that combine AI tools with process redesign, training and effective management may generate more output from the same resources.
These are upside mechanisms, not forecasts of their own. The evidence does not establish a numerical probability that growth will exceed the upper bound.

MTI’s 9 September 2026 parliamentary reply cautioned that government-backed AI support measures are relatively new and that there is “insufficient data to assess their impact at this point.” The ministry also said sector productivity reflects demand, workforce skills, management and broader digital transformation. That qualification limits how confidently AI policy can be credited with future GDP gains.

What the outlook means for Singapore businesses
Businesses should plan for opportunity without treating the forecast as guaranteed revenue. Technology suppliers may find demand in AI infrastructure and implementation, while construction firms and their subcontractors may benefit if project activity remains firm. Companies in other sectors should test whether AI improves a specific process—such as forecasting, customer support or quality control—before committing to a large rollout.
MTI says the Enterprise Development Grant helps businesses upgrade, innovate, grow and transform. A 2026 ministerial reply cited an average annual cost reduction of S$200,000 among recipients in 2025. That is an average reported for those recipients, not a promised saving for every applicant. Eligibility, co-funding and partner requirements can change, so firms should verify the current terms with Enterprise Singapore before relying on the grant in a budget.

Bottom line
Singapore’s upgraded 2026 outlook rests on a stronger global AI-spending environment and a construction sector that has recently expanded. Growth above the forecast ceiling is possible if investment, project execution and productivity all outperform expectations. The main constraint is evidence: AI support programmes are new, their measured effects are limited, and the outcome still depends on demand, skills, management and the wider global economy.
