Possibly, but not yet as a proven replacement for conventional air conditioners. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous adsorbent materials that can take up and release water vapor when conditions change. Engineers are studying that behavior in heat-driven chillers, heat pumps and humidity-control systems. The promising part is that a MOF cycle could use heat—potentially low-temperature or recovered heat—instead of relying only on electrically driven vapor compression. The unresolved part is system-level performance: coefficient of performance, heat and mass transfer, durability, manufacturing scale, cost and life-cycle impacts are still being established.

What a MOF is—and what it is not

A metal-organic framework is a crystalline material built from metal-containing nodes joined by organic linkers. The resulting structure contains an enormous network of molecular-scale pores. By changing the metals, linkers and pore geometry, researchers can tune how strongly the framework interacts with particular molecules.

For cooling applications, the important molecule is usually water. A MOF can adsorb water vapor onto internal surfaces and later release that vapor when heat is supplied. “Adsorption” means molecules attach to a solid surface; it is different from absorption, in which molecules penetrate into the bulk of a liquid or solid.

The MOF is not a complete air conditioner and does not cool a room by itself. It is one component—an adsorbent bed or coated heat exchanger—in an engineered adsorption system. The system also needs a working fluid, evaporator and condenser or heat-rejection path, valves, heat exchangers, controls and a source of regeneration heat. The material, fluid, temperatures, airflow, vapor pressure, cycle timing and hardware all determine the result.

How MOF-based cooling could work

An adsorption chiller moves heat through a repeating sequence. Water can serve as the working fluid in systems designed for suitable temperatures, while the MOF alternately captures and releases water vapor.

1. Adsorption releases heat in the adsorbent bed

When a dry or partially regenerated MOF is exposed to water vapor, the vapor enters its pores and binds to the internal surface. Adsorption gives off heat. A heat-transfer fluid carries that heat away so the bed can continue taking up vapor.

2. Evaporation provides the cooling effect

In a separate evaporator, water evaporates at low pressure. Evaporation consumes latent heat, which can be drawn from a chilled-water loop or air stream. That is the useful cooling step. The vapor then travels toward the MOF bed, where adsorption maintains the low pressure needed for evaporation.

3. Heat drives desorption

Once the MOF approaches its water-loading limit, an external heat source raises its temperature. The framework releases the adsorbed water vapor—desorption or regeneration. The vapor moves to a condenser or heat-rejection section, where it becomes liquid again.

4. The cycle switches beds

Practical systems use at least two beds. While one bed adsorbs and supports evaporation, the other is heated and regenerated. Valves then switch their roles. Continuous cooling depends on fast heat and mass transfer, effective sealing and controls that synchronize the beds.

This arrangement can use heat that would otherwise be wasted, such as industrial waste heat or solar-heated water. It still consumes energy for pumps, fans, controls and heat rejection, and it may need an auxiliary heater when usable heat is unavailable. A material’s high water uptake therefore does not automatically translate into low electricity use or a high coefficient of performance (COP).

What current studies actually demonstrate

Reviews published from 2020 through May 2025 describe MOFs as a highly tunable platform for adsorption-based heat transformation. They discuss cooling, heat pumps, air conditioning, humidity control and atmospheric-water harvesting. The Chemical Reviews authors of Water and Metal–Organic Frameworks: From Interaction toward Utilization (2020) state: “Most applications with MOFs are still in an exploratory state.”

A 2025 review identifies a low COP as a fundamental limitation of adsorption heat pumps. MOFs may improve adsorption characteristics or operating temperature ranges, but the review does not show that they have solved the COP problem. A 2023 review likewise reports that most relevant demonstrations remained at bench or small-pilot scale and calls for techno-economic and life-cycle analysis.

Reported water-harvesting productivity

A 2024 Energy & Environmental Science study reported MOF water-harvesting strategies producing 0.1, 1.0 and 3.5 litres of water per kilogram of MOF per day, depending on the approach. Those are water-production figures, not cooling-capacity, COP or air-conditioning efficiency measurements. One active device used cooling-assisted adsorption and demonstrated litre-scale production in a semi-arid climate. It shows that a MOF can operate in a real outdoor environment; it does not establish commercial building-cooling performance.

Reported cooling-power measurement

The 2020 Chemical Reviews article reports 2,900 W of gross cooling power at the beginning of an adsorption cycle and 690 W average cooling power up to 90% equilibrium loading in seven minutes. Those numbers came from a heat-exchanger evaluation under specified adsorption-chiller conditions: a 90 °C heat source, 30 °C heat rejection and an 18 °C evaporator. They are not typical ratings for commercial equipment and should not be compared directly with a household air-conditioner nameplate.

Why MOFs could make cooling greener

Using heat instead of only electricity

Vapor-compression air conditioners use a compressor as their main energy-consuming device. An adsorption system replaces that compressor-centered cycle with a heat-driven regeneration step. If the regeneration heat is genuinely surplus—industrial waste heat, district-heat return water or solar thermal energy—the system could reduce electricity demand during operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The benefit depends on the temperature and availability of that heat. A building that needs a gas-fired heater solely to regenerate the MOF may shift, rather than eliminate, energy use. Heat-rejection fans and pumps also remain part of the electrical load.

Tunable water affinity

MOFs can be designed for different water-uptake curves. A useful material adsorbs a large amount of water over the humidity and temperature range available in the system, then releases it with a manageable regeneration temperature. Researchers can also tune pore size, hydrophilicity and framework chemistry to target particular cycle conditions.

Humidity control as a separate value

Air conditioning often spends substantial energy both cooling and dehumidifying. An adsorbent bed can remove water vapor before or alongside sensible cooling. That could let a cooling coil operate at a different temperature or reduce latent-load work in humid climates. Whether the total system saves energy depends on the bed’s regeneration heat, pressure drop, cycling speed and integration with the cooling loop.

Potential for compact heat exchangers

When MOF crystals are grown directly on a conductive heat exchanger or formed into a mechanically robust coating, the distance for heat and vapor transport can shrink. Faster transfer could shorten cycles and improve power density. The coating must still survive repeated wetting, drying and thermal cycling without losing capacity or shedding particles.

Why a promising material is not yet a green air conditioner

Low COP remains a system problem

COP is the ratio of useful cooling to supplied energy. Adsorption machines can have attractive electricity use while requiring substantial thermal input. A fair comparison must state whether COP includes only electricity or also counts the regeneration heat, and it must include pumps, fans and heat rejection. Material uptake data alone cannot answer that question.

Heat and mass transfer limit speed

MOF powders can adsorb water quickly in laboratory measurements but perform more slowly when packed into a thick bed. Water vapor must reach interior pores, and heat must leave or enter the particles. Adding binders or dense coatings can improve handling while reducing accessible pore volume. Engineers therefore optimize particle size, coating thickness, exchanger geometry, airflow and cycle timing together.

Long-term stability is not settled

Outdoor HVAC equipment may cycle thousands of times while exposed to humidity, contaminants, temperature swings and vibration. Some frameworks can lose capacity or structural integrity in the presence of liquid water, acidic gases or other pollutants. A short laboratory test cannot establish decades of service life. Repeated-cycle data, failure mechanisms and safe replacement procedures are still needed.

Manufacturing and cost must be demonstrated at scale

Producing a uniform MOF with tightly controlled pore chemistry can require specialized precursors and processing. Large adsorbent beds also need reliable heat exchangers, seals and controls. A material that performs well per gram may be uneconomic when manufactured in tonnes and integrated into a complete chiller. The 2023 review’s call for techno-economic analysis reflects this gap.

Life-cycle impacts could change the verdict

A greener claim must include mining and refining metal salts, synthesizing organic linkers, solvent recovery, factory energy, transport, maintenance and end-of-life treatment. It must also account for the source of regeneration heat and the electricity mix. Until these inventories are measured for full systems, “greener” is a conditional possibility rather than an established result.

How MOF cooling compares with other technologies

No standardized, commercial head-to-head comparison establishes a winner. A meaningful evaluation should report the following for every candidate:

  • Heat source: required temperature, availability, variability and whether it is waste, solar, district or fuel-fired heat.
  • Cooling output: net delivered cooling after subtracting heat-exchanger, pump and fan loads.
  • COP definition: thermal COP, electrical COP or a combined figure with all inputs stated.
  • Humidity performance: water-vapor removal rate and the energy required to regenerate the adsorbent.
  • Cycle life: capacity retention and structural integrity after repeated adsorption and desorption.
  • Operating conditions: outdoor temperature, humidity, evaporator and condenser temperatures, and cycle duration.
  • Scale and maturity: laboratory, bench, pilot or commercial installation, with independently verified data.

Conventional vapor-compression equipment is commercially mature and has standardized ratings. Other adsorption systems may use established adsorbents such as silica gel or zeolites. MOFs offer greater chemical tunability, but that advantage must overcome manufacturing, durability and integration challenges before it becomes a practical market benefit.

Could a MOF system cool a building?

In principle, yes. A building with a steady source of suitable-temperature waste heat, a large heat sink and space for an adsorption chiller could be a better fit than a small apartment relying on intermittent cooling. Industrial facilities, data centers with recoverable heat, hospitals and district-energy networks are the kinds of sites engineers can evaluate first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The design would begin with the building’s sensible and latent loads, then match a MOF’s water-uptake curve and regeneration temperature to the available heat. Engineers would size the evaporator, condenser, adsorbent beds and thermal storage, model part-load operation and verify water quality and air filtration. A pilot would need to measure delivered cooling, total energy input, humidity control, noise, maintenance and capacity retention over many cycles.

Are MOF air conditioners available yet?

The reviewed publications do not establish a consumer-ready MOF air conditioner, replacement accessory or standardized product rating. They describe materials, prototypes and research demonstrations rather than a widely sold household appliance. A water harvester demonstrated in 2024 is a different device and should not be presented as an air-conditioning product.

For a purchase decision today, use certified performance data from commercially available equipment rather than assuming that a laboratory MOF result predicts a finished unit. For a research or industrial project, ask the developer for full-cycle COP, net cooling power, regeneration temperature, parasitic electricity, humidity-removal data, cycle-life results and a life-cycle assessment.

What would prove the greener-air-conditioning claim?

  1. Define the service: specify indoor temperature, humidity, airflow and required cooling capacity.
  2. Publish complete energy accounting: include regeneration heat, pumps, fans, controls, cooling-tower or dry-cooler loads and standby energy.
  3. Test realistic weather: run seasonal profiles rather than a single laboratory condition.
  4. Demonstrate durability: report capacity and COP after extended wet-dry cycling with representative contaminants.
  5. Compare on the same basis: use the same climate, delivered cooling, temperature lift, maintenance assumptions and service life as a vapor-compression reference.
  6. Complete life-cycle and cost analyses: include material production, plant construction, replacement intervals, heat-source emissions and disposal.

Until those steps are documented at meaningful scale, the most accurate conclusion is that MOFs are an enabling material for heat-driven cooling and dehumidification—not a proven standalone route to greener air conditioning.
