Comb lasers could help AI data centers move more information through optical links by supplying many regularly spaced wavelengths from one source. Each wavelength can carry a separate data channel over the same fiber. Laboratory links have demonstrated high aggregate capacity, but the evidence does not establish that comb lasers are commercially deployed at scale or will replace the separate lasers used in today’s transceivers.
What is a frequency-comb laser?
A frequency comb produces a set of optical frequencies, or wavelengths, spaced at regular intervals. In wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), each wavelength can carry an independent data stream, and the streams travel together through one optical fiber. At the receiving end, the wavelengths are separated and their data recovered.
The appeal is that one multi-wavelength source could take the place of an array of individual lasers in some link designs. That could reduce component count or transmitter footprint while increasing the bandwidth carried by a fiber. Whether it also reduces energy use depends on the complete link—not just the laser—including modulation, wavelength routing, control, receivers, coupling, and packaging.
How does a comb become a data-center link?
- Generate the optical carriers. A comb source provides multiple wavelengths with regular spacing.
- Encode data. Modulators put separate data streams onto individual wavelengths.
- Combine and transmit. The channels are multiplexed into one fiber, where they can travel in parallel.
- Separate and receive. A demultiplexer routes the wavelengths to receiver channels, which recover the data.
- Keep the link stable. The source and optical components must maintain the right wavelength alignment and operation as conditions such as temperature change.
The comb is therefore one part of a transmitter and link architecture, not a self-contained replacement for an entire transceiver. Filtering, modulation, demultiplexing, control, fiber coupling, and packaging all affect whether the approach is practical in a compact data-center system.

What kinds of comb sources are being tested?
Kerr microresonator combs
A pumped nonlinear microresonator can generate a Kerr comb. The 2023 silicon-photonic link demonstration used this approach. Its promise is a compact source with multiple carriers, but those carriers still have to be filtered, modulated, and routed into a usable link.
Quantum-dot mode-locked comb lasers
Quantum-dot mode-locked lasers generate multiple wavelengths within a semiconductor laser. The cited work includes an O-band transmitter and a separate coherent long-reach experiment. These devices are related to Kerr microcombs in that both produce multiple optical carriers, but they are different implementations; their spacing, architecture, and role in a link should not be treated as interchangeable.

What have researchers demonstrated?
The results below measure different things. A device’s number of comb lines is not a link data rate, and transmitter energy per bit is not the same as energy use for a complete facility. Reach, modulation, detection scheme, channel count, and measurement boundaries also differ, so the figures are not a direct ranking of competing systems.
| Demonstration | Reported result | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Nature Photonics authors, 2023: silicon-photonic link driven by a Kerr comb | 512 Gb/s aggregate across 32 independent wavelength channels on one fiber | A chip-based link demonstration. The paper describes scaling to hundreds of channels as potential, not as a demonstrated production system. |
| IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics authors, online publication July 23, 2024; journal issue 2025: quantum-dot comb-laser silicon microring transmitter | 8 × 100 Gb/s; 1.66 pJ/bit, with the laser included | A measured transmitter result, not an end-to-end link or facility energy figure. |
| Nature Communications authors, 2024: O-band coherent transmission using quantum-dot mode-locked comb lasers | 12.1 Tb/s over a 10 km single-mode-fiber link using 26 wavelengths | A coherent long-reach experiment. Its reach and link configuration differ from the other demonstrations listed here. |
| Scientific Reports authors, 2024: quantum-dot semiconductor comb-laser characterization | Up to 89 comb wavelengths, spaced at 25 GHz, across 2.2 THz of optical bandwidth | A laser-device characterization, not a data-link capacity result. |
| NIST/Nature Communications authors, 2025: integrated multi-port, multi-wavelength source and demultiplexer/control work | 2.4 mW total demultiplexer power; 10 fJ/bit for an 8-channel system and 2.5 fJ/bit for a 32-channel system, at 32 Gb/s per channel | Demultiplexer and control results for the reported system, not total transceiver or facility consumption. The work also demonstrates automatic locking to and tracking of comb lines. |
Taken together, these results show that comb sources can support multi-wavelength links and that researchers are integrating more of the supporting optical functions. They do not show that one architecture has become the standard. In particular, the 2023 paper’s hundreds-of-channels figure is a scale-up possibility, not a measured production system.

Could comb lasers make AI data centers faster or more energy efficient?
More bandwidth per fiber is plausible
Sending independent channels at multiple wavelengths lets a link carry parallel data streams through the same fiber. That is the basic route by which a comb could raise the capacity of an optical connection. The 512 Gb/s, 32-channel Kerr-comb link and the 12.1 Tb/s, 26-wavelength coherent experiment show that substantial aggregate rates have been demonstrated under different laboratory conditions.
Smaller or simpler transmitters are a design goal, not a guaranteed outcome
Using one source to provide multiple carriers could reduce the need for separate lasers in some designs. But the full system still needs components to stabilize, route, modulate, and receive those channels. Integration can shift complexity rather than eliminate it; packaging, coupling losses, control overhead, and component yield can affect the eventual footprint and cost.

Energy savings must be measured across the whole link
The 1.66 pJ/bit result includes the laser in the measured transmitter, while the NIST-associated 2025 figures describe the demultiplexer and control result. Neither is a measurement of all components in a deployed optical link, much less a data center’s facility-wide energy use. A source-level or subsystem efficiency result cannot by itself establish lower energy per bit for an operational AI cluster.

- Stable, uniform channels: Wavelengths need to remain usable and sufficiently consistent across the comb.
- Low-loss wavelength routing: Filters and demultiplexers must separate channels without erasing the efficiency or capacity gains.
- Modulation and reception: Every carrier needs a compatible way to encode and recover data at the intended rate and reach.
- Control: The system must lock to and track wavelengths reliably as operating conditions change. The 2025 NIST-associated work’s automatic locking and tracking demonstrates progress on this supporting task.
- Coupling and packaging: Connecting the source and photonic components to fiber and electronics in a compact, reliable assembly is part of the link problem.
- System-level efficiency: Power used by lasers, modulators, control, routing, and receivers must be considered together before claiming an energy advantage.
Are comb lasers ready to replace data-center transceivers?
The available evidence supports a promising research direction: laboratory links and integrated prototypes demonstrate multi-wavelength transmission, and newer work tackles control and demultiplexing alongside the comb source. It does not establish commercial availability at scale, a universal winning architecture, or a date when comb-laser links will become standard in AI data centers. The European Commission’s COINCOST project reporting, last updated November 19, 2024, is evidence of project development—not proof of fleet-wide adoption. A 2025 arXiv preprint on comb-driven coherent transmitters is also preliminary evidence, not a product specification.
