Jeff Bezos said AI-driven productivity gains could eventually let some people support their families while working three days a week. He presented that as a possibility for “some people,” not as a change already adopted by employers or a promise that three days of work will bring five days’ pay. The remarks came in a Fox News interview broadcast October 7, 2026.
What did Jeff Bezos say about a three-day workweek?
In an interview with Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier, Bezos predicted that greater productivity could give some people the option to work fewer days while still supporting their families. “Some people will also decide, you know what? I can support my family by working three days a week,” he said. “That’s what productivity in the economy means.”
Bezos also suggested that higher productivity could make it possible for some households to rely on one income. In his view, employers might then have more difficulty hiring people who no longer need to work two jobs. Both ideas were his forecasts, not established outcomes.
Why did Bezos connect AI with shorter workweeks?
Bezos framed AI as a potential source of broad productivity gains. Fox News identified him as a co-founder and co-CEO of Prometheus, where he described a goal of building an “artificial general engineer” to help people turn ideas into physical products. “We’re going to make the tools so easy to use that anyone will be able to be an engineer,” he said.

He predicted AI could generate double-digit productivity gains across the economy. Fox’s account did not provide a measurement, timeframe, or independent analysis supporting that figure, so it should be understood as Bezos’s projection—not a result already recorded in the economy. The interview report also did not present product-release details or performance results showing that Prometheus has delivered the gains he discussed.
Does this mean people will soon work three days a week?
No. The interview described a possible future choice for some people; it did not announce a policy, a timetable, or an employer commitment. Nor did it establish whether productivity gains would result in shorter schedules, higher wages, greater company output, reduced staffing, or some combination. Those outcomes depend on how employers and workers share the gains, a question the interview did not resolve.

A voluntary three-day schedule supported by greater output is also different from an employer cutting hours or jobs. Bezos’s comments do not show that AI has caused a broad shift to shorter workweeks, or that the predicted economic gains will be distributed in a way that lets families work less.
How did Amazon job cuts enter the conversation?
Baier raised roughly 30,000 Amazon corporate roles cut since late 2025. Bezos described Amazon as a special case following substantial workforce expansion during the pandemic. The exchange put his optimistic productivity forecast alongside current concerns about job losses, but it did not establish that the reported cuts were caused by AI. The number is interview context, not evidence that AI has already produced the three-day-week scenario.

What is established—and what remains a prediction?
- Established in the interview report: Fox News reported Bezos’s remarks in an interview with Baier broadcast October 7, 2026, at Blue Origin’s factory floor in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Fox News Media had announced the interview on October 5; Fox Nation lists the episode as a 25-minute interview dated October 7.
- Bezos’s prediction: AI could raise productivity, and some people might eventually choose to support their families while working three days a week. He also predicted possible double-digit economy-wide productivity gains.
- Not demonstrated by the report: that AI has delivered those gains, that employers are moving to three-day schedules, that the Amazon job cuts were caused by AI, or that workers will receive the benefits of productivity growth as shorter hours.
The principal account of the interview is Fox News’s October 7, 2026 report. Its quotations are attributed statements in the report, not an independently supplied transcript.
