Short answer: At least one African antelope already does. The National Park Service reports an established population of African gemsbok (also called oryx) in southern New Mexico, including thousands on White Sands Missile Range. That demonstrates persistence for this desert-adapted species in a particular landscape—not proof that African antelopes as a group can tolerate every New Mexico winter, drought, or future climate condition.
Gemsbok have access to suitable desert forage and can go long periods without drinking. Their presence also creates management problems because native predators do not effectively limit their numbers. The available evidence does not establish a numerical cold-weather limit for gemsbok or a species-specific forecast under future New Mexico warming and drought.
What is already known about African antelopes in New Mexico?
The clearest evidence comes from African gemsbok (Oryx gazella), a Kalahari-native antelope introduced to southern New Mexico. The National Park Service says 95 oryx were released on White Sands Missile Range and nearby areas between 1969 and 1977. Its African Oryx page, last updated August 27, 2023, says thousands live on the missile range today. Annual hunts began in 1974 to help control and stabilize the population.
This is evidence of a self-sustaining population in one part of the state. It is not a statewide experiment and it does not show that every African antelope species would survive there. New Mexico contains high-elevation mountains, cold plateaus, grasslands, shrublands, and desert basins. The missile-range population occupies a specific desert environment with particular food, shelter, and predator conditions.

The NPS identifies several local foods: desert grasses, yucca, buffalo gourds, and mesquite bean pods. It says the success of the oryx is due partly to the abundance of food and notes that gemsbok can go a long time without drinking water. Those details help explain persistence, but they also show why habitat matters. An animal that can conserve water still needs enough edible vegetation and space to reach it.
Why gemsbok cope well with New Mexico’s desert drought
Water conservation is a behavioral and physiological advantage
Gemsbok evolved in arid regions where free water is unreliable. Their ability to obtain moisture from plants and reduce dependence on drinking water gives them an advantage during dry periods. In New Mexico, that trait can be useful when surface water is scarce, provided forage remains available.
“Can go a long time without drinking” should not be interpreted as “does not need water.” Prolonged drought can reduce the moisture and nutritional value of plants, eliminate preferred forage, and increase competition. A drought-resistant herbivore may survive a dry season while still losing body condition, producing fewer young, or competing more intensely with native wildlife.

The scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah) provides well-documented context for desert adaptation. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute describes this species as tolerating elevated body temperatures, limiting water loss, and obtaining moisture from forage. It reports that scimitar-horned oryx generally graze at night and rest in shade during the hottest part of the day.

Smithsonian gives a striking figure: scimitar-horned oryx can tolerate an internal body temperature of 116 degrees Fahrenheit (47 degrees Celsius) while conserving water. That is an internal physiological measurement, not an outdoor air-temperature limit. It also applies to scimitar-horned oryx, not automatically to gemsbok or every other African antelope.
Food availability can matter more than a simple rainfall total
Two locations receiving the same rainfall can offer very different conditions. Soil, plant communities, grazing pressure, fire, and timing of rain determine whether an antelope finds usable forage. The NPS list of grasses, yucca, buffalo gourds, and mesquite pods is therefore more informative than a generic statement that the species “likes dry climates.”
When drought removes those foods, the population’s advantage narrows. Smithsonian lists persistent drought and loss of food from livestock grazing among threats to scimitar-horned oryx. That warning is species-specific, but the ecological principle applies broadly: adaptation to aridity does not eliminate dependence on habitat.

The documented population shows that gemsbok can persist through the winters encountered in southern New Mexico. It does not establish the lowest air temperature they can survive, how long they can tolerate a freeze, or whether the same result would hold in northern or high-elevation parts of the state.

Why the available evidence cannot supply a cold threshold
The sources reviewed do not publish a gemsbok-specific lower-temperature limit for wild New Mexico conditions. A general peer-reviewed captive-care reference says many desert and tropical species need indoor housing during the cold season in colder regions and discusses shelters, windbreaks, and frostbite risk. That guidance is designed for managed animals, where keepers can provide buildings, bedding, supplemental feed, and veterinary care. It is not a measured wild-survival threshold for gemsbok.
Winter survival also depends on more than the thermometer reading. Wind exposure, snow or ice, access to forage under snow, body condition before winter, age, pregnancy, and the availability of dry shelter can all change outcomes. A short cold snap in a sheltered desert basin is not equivalent to repeated freezing weather on an exposed mountain slope.
What the New Mexico population does—and does not—prove
- It does show: gemsbok have persisted in the southern New Mexico environment where they were introduced, including its observed winter conditions.
- It does not show: a universal minimum temperature, successful survival at every New Mexico elevation, or equivalent cold tolerance in unrelated antelope species.
- It does not show: that captive animals can be kept outdoors without shelter in a colder region.
How changing temperatures could alter the answer
Future climate effects cannot be inferred from the species’ current presence alone. The 2025 New Mexico State Wildlife Action Plan identifies climate-related pressures such as drought and intense heat affecting southwestern riparian systems, but the available excerpt does not project outcomes for African gemsbok or another named antelope.
Warmer average temperatures might reduce the frequency of severe freezes in some locations, yet that would not automatically improve conditions. More intense heat can increase maintenance costs, dry plants faster, and reduce the seasonal recovery of forage. A changing pattern of rain can matter as much as the annual total: longer dry intervals, intense storms that produce little usable plant growth, or altered timing of spring moisture could all affect food.

Climate change can also shift interactions with native species, livestock, fences, and disease vectors. None of those effects has been quantified for the New Mexico gemsbok population in the sources available here. A responsible conclusion is therefore conditional: current persistence is documented, but future population size and distribution remain uncertain.
Gemsbok and scimitar-horned oryx: what can actually be compared?
Both animals are desert-adapted oryx, but evidence for one cannot be transferred wholesale to the other. The table separates what is directly documented from what is only useful as general context.

Why persistence is also an ecological management issue
An introduced population can be biologically successful while creating problems for native ecosystems. The NPS classifies the oryx as exotic at White Sands National Park and describes efforts to keep animals out. A 67-mile (108-kilometer) boundary fence was erected in 1996 to prevent oryx from entering the park.

The agency also says coyotes and mountain lions are not effective at controlling oryx numbers in New Mexico, allowing reproduction without restriction. That difference from the species’ native range helps explain why hunting and exclusion fencing are used. The NPS identifies concern about effects on native plants and animals at White Sands National Park.

Consequently, “can survive?” has two separate meanings. From an individual-animal perspective, gemsbok have demonstrated survival in southern New Mexico. From a conservation-management perspective, allowing a large introduced herbivore to expand is not automatically a benefit. Managers must weigh forage competition, impacts on native plants and animals, vehicle or fence conflicts, and the cost of population control.
A practical framework for evaluating another African antelope
If the question concerns a species other than gemsbok, use these checks rather than assuming that all antelopes share the same limits:
- Identify the species and its native climate. Desert, savanna, woodland, and montane species may have very different cold and drought tolerances.
- Match the proposed location. Compare elevation, winter wind, freeze duration, snow cover, summer heat, and seasonal rainfall—not just the city’s annual average.
- Check year-round forage. Determine whether native plants provide adequate food during late winter and drought, when nutritional quality may be lowest.
- Separate water access from water dependence. A species may rarely drink under normal conditions but still require moisture-rich forage and emergency water during extreme drought.
- Distinguish wild and captive evidence. A zoo or ranch can provide shelter and supplemental feed that are absent from a free-ranging population.
- Assess management consequences. Examine fencing, hunting authority, predator pressure, disease, competition with native herbivores, and the legal status of an introduced species.
What evidence would resolve the remaining uncertainties?
A credible winter or climate forecast would require more than the current presence of gemsbok. Useful studies would track locations and survival across elevation gradients, record body condition and reproduction through drought, measure forage quality, and relate mortality to specific cold events. Long-term monitoring could also test whether range expansion changes competition with native herbivores or increases conflicts near roads and fences.
Until those data exist, avoid converting the observed southern New Mexico population into a universal claim about African antelopes. The strongest defensible statement is narrower: gemsbok have already shown that they can persist in the desert conditions of southern New Mexico, while their precise winter threshold and their response to future climate change remain unresolved.
