Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
To host Cosmic Frontiers today, use the official Cosmic Frontiers 0.8.0-Nightly.012 Server Files.zip for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge, run it with Java 21, and make every player use that exact client release. Install the matching NeoForge server files, accept the EULA, configure access and backups, then expose port 25565 or use managed hosting. Do not upgrade an important 0.7.x world in place: the official release notes say that 0.7.x worlds are incompatible with 0.8 and newer.

A working server depends on exact version alignment. The server, every client, Minecraft, NeoForge, and the modpack release must agree. A client running the older 1.20.1/Forge line cannot reliably join a 1.21.1/NeoForge server, even if the server address and account are correct.
- A computer or managed host that can stay online while people play.
- Java 21 installed and selected for both the launcher and the dedicated server process.
- The official server-files ZIP for the same Cosmic Frontiers release that players install.
- Write permission for the server directory and enough disk space for the world, logs, backups and generated files.
- Administrative access to the host firewall and, for home hosting, the router.
The project’s published instructions do not establish a universal RAM requirement or a guaranteed player capacity. Performance depends on world size, loaded chunks, machines, exploration, view distance, concurrent players and the host hardware, so treat memory as a resource to monitor rather than a fixed promise.

Install the matching client first
Set up one client before configuring the server. This gives you a known-good pack version for testing and provides the files that friends must match.
- Install Prism Launcher 9 or newer.
- Open Prism and choose Add Instance.
- Select CurseForge as the source and search for Cosmic Frontiers.
- Select the official project and install its latest official release. For a new 0.8 server, select the 1.21.1/NeoForge release that corresponds to the server-files ZIP.
- Open Prism’s Java management controls and install or select Java 21 for the instance.
- Launch the instance once. Confirm that the main menu opens and that the expected Cosmic Frontiers version is shown before troubleshooting the dedicated server.
The pack wiki lists -XX:+UseZGC -XX:+ZGenerational as optional JVM arguments. Add them only in the instance’s Java settings if you want to follow that tuning advice; they are not a universal performance guarantee and should not replace correcting a version or memory problem.

1. Download the official server pack
On the Cosmic Frontiers CurseForge files page, download Cosmic Frontiers 0.8.0-Nightly.012 Server Files.zip, or the server-files archive that exactly matches the client release you intend to run. Keep the ZIP as an untouched backup. Do not substitute a client instance folder for a dedicated server pack.
2. Create an isolated server directory
Make a directory used only by this server, such as CosmicFrontiers-0.8.0. Extract the archive there rather than into a general Minecraft folder. The account running the server needs read and write access so it can create configuration files, libraries, logs, a world directory and backups.
If a previous server or world matters, copy it to separate storage before extracting or updating anything. Never test a new modpack release against the only copy of a valuable world.
3. Check the Java runtime
From a terminal in the server directory, verify the runtime:

java -version
The output should identify Java 21. If it reports another major version, install Java 21 and change the service, shell, control panel or startup shortcut so that the server actually uses that executable. Installing Java 21 without changing the process path does not fix a server that still launches with an older runtime.
Install NeoForge when the pack does not include a launcher
Some server archives include the generated NeoForge launcher; others require you to run the matching installer. Use the NeoForge installer version required by the Cosmic Frontiers release, not an arbitrary newer installer.
- Place the matching NeoForge installer JAR in the dedicated server directory.
- Open a terminal in that directory.
- Run the server installation command, replacing the filename with the installer you downloaded:
java -jar neoforge-installer.jar --installServer
NeoForge’s server installation creates platform launchers: run.sh on Linux and macOS, and run.bat on Windows. If the archive already contains a generated launcher, use that launcher and do not install a second, mismatched NeoForge version beside it.
On Linux or macOS, make the shell script executable if necessary:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
chmod +x run.sh
Keep the launcher and all generated libraries in the same server directory. Moving only the script, or launching it from a different working directory, can produce missing-file errors.
Accept the EULA and perform the first start
- Start the generated launcher once:
run.baton Windows or./run.shon Linux/macOS. - Expect the initial run to stop after creating
eula.txt. This is normal; NeoForge requires an administrator to acknowledge the Minecraft EULA. - Open
eula.txtand changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you accept the EULA. - Save the file and start the same launcher again.
- Wait for the console to report that the server is ready, commonly shown by a Done message. The first run can take longer while libraries, registries and world data are generated.
Do not close the process while it is generating files unless it is clearly stuck and you have checked the log. Stop a running server from its console with stop so world data is flushed cleanly.

Configure the server for a private group
Set basic server properties
Stop the server before editing server.properties. Set the world name, difficulty, game rules and view or simulation distances according to the hardware and the group’s needs. Save the file, then restart the server so the settings are applied. A setting that is not published for Cosmic Frontiers should be treated as a local choice, not as an official pack requirement.
Leave the server port at the default 25565 unless you have a reason to change it. If you choose another port, players must include that port in the address and the firewall and router rules must use the same number.
Whitelist players
For a friends-only server, enable the whitelist in the console or in the server properties, then add each player’s Minecraft account name. Test with one invited account before distributing the address. A whitelist reduces accidental access but does not replace strong account security or network controls.
Grant operator access sparingly
Give operator permissions only to people who need administration commands. Keep routine play accounts at normal permission levels, and remove operator access from an account that no longer manages the server.
Plan backups before exploration
Back up the world while the server is stopped, or use a backup method that is explicitly safe for a running Minecraft server. Keep multiple dated copies on storage separate from the live directory. A backup on the same disk does not protect against disk failure, accidental deletion or a bad update. Before changing NeoForge or Cosmic Frontiers, create a fresh backup and record which release produced it.
Choose JVM memory conservatively
The available sources do not publish a tested RAM baseline or player-capacity figure for Cosmic Frontiers. Set memory according to the machine’s total RAM, leave room for the operating system and monitor startup and runtime logs. If the host begins swapping, the process is killed by the operating system, or garbage-collection pauses become frequent, reduce load or move to a larger machine rather than copying an unverified number from another modpack.

Let friends connect from outside your home
Find the address players should use
On the same local network, players can generally use the host computer’s local address. Remote players need the host’s reachable public address or a managed tunnel or hosting address. Do not publish a private local address as though it were reachable from the internet.
Allow the Minecraft port
NeoForge’s server guidance identifies 25565 as the default port that may require network setup. Allow that TCP port in the computer’s firewall and forward it from the router to the server computer’s local address. If the router has separate internal and external port fields, map external 25565 to the same internal port used by the server.
- Reserve a stable local address for the server computer in the router, or configure a reliable static address.
- Create a firewall rule allowing the server process or TCP port 25565.
- Create a router port-forwarding rule from the internet to the server computer.
- Restart the server and test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, rather than testing only from inside the home LAN.
- Give friends the public address and port. Keep the whitelist enabled and do not post the address publicly.
Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT and do not provide an inbound public address. In that case, ordinary port forwarding may never work; use a managed tunnel or managed Minecraft host that supports the exact 1.21.1/NeoForge Cosmic Frontiers release.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
The right choice depends less on the modpack name than on who will maintain the machine and network. Confirm support for the exact Cosmic Frontiers release before paying for a plan; a host that supports generic Forge or NeoForge may not have the required server pack or Java runtime.
| Decision area | Self-hosting at home or on your own VPS | Managed Minecraft hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront and recurring cost | Uses existing hardware or a separately rented machine; electricity or infrastructure costs remain your responsibility. | Recurring hosting fee; current price depends on the provider and plan and is not established here. |
| Availability | Depends on your power, internet connection and whether the machine stays on. | Designed for persistent availability, subject to the provider’s published uptime terms. |
| Files and JVM control | Full control of server files, launchers, Java and JVM arguments. | Control varies by panel; verify that custom NeoForge files, Java 21 and the required arguments are allowed. |
| Networking effort | You handle firewall rules, router forwarding, carrier-grade NAT and changing public addresses. | The provider normally supplies a reachable address, so home port forwarding is avoided. |
| Backups and recovery | You schedule, store and test backups yourself. | Backup tools may be included, but frequency, retention and restore guarantees must be checked. |
| Version support | You can install the exact server-files ZIP and matching NeoForge yourself. | Ask whether the panel currently supports Cosmic Frontiers 0.8.0-Nightly.012, Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge before ordering. |
Managed hosting is most useful when you need a server online without maintaining a home network. Self-hosting is preferable when you need direct file and JVM control and are comfortable owning updates, security and recovery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make every player’s installation match
Have each player install the same Cosmic Frontiers release through Prism Launcher and select Java 21. The following values must match the server:
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
- Minecraft version: 1.21.1 for the current 0.8 line.
- Mod loader: NeoForge, not the legacy Forge line.
- Cosmic Frontiers release: exactly the one represented by the server-files ZIP.
- Pack-side configuration and required dependencies included by that release.
Do not copy random mods into the instance to silence an error. First compare the client’s version and loader with the server’s files; an apparently missing mod is often a release mismatch.
World migration: 0.7.x to 0.8+
The official Frontiers-PackForge release notes contain this warning: “CAUTION : This is a version migration, old 0.7.X worlds will be incompatible with 0.8+”. Treat 0.8 and later as a new world line unless the pack authors publish a specific migration procedure.
- Stop the 0.7 server cleanly.
- Make and separately store a complete backup of the 0.7 world and server directory.
- Install 0.8 in a new directory rather than replacing the old files.
- Start a new 0.8 world and verify that the client and server work together.
- Keep the 0.7 instance available for the old save. Do not point the 0.8 server at the only copy of that world.
Even if a world appears to load, incompatible registries or changed content can cause missing blocks, broken machines or permanent corruption. A separate test instance is safer than an in-place conversion.
Troubleshoot the failures people see first
The launcher or server will not start
- Run
java -versionand confirm Java 21 is the runtime actually selected by Prism or the server service. - Check that the instance and server are both on Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge.
- Confirm that the server launcher was generated by the matching NeoForge installer and that its libraries remain in the server directory.
- Read the first error in the log rather than the final shutdown line; later errors are often consequences.
Players see missing-mod, registry or channel errors
Compare the client’s exact Cosmic Frontiers release with the server-files ZIP. Remove old 0.7.x/1.20.1 files from the test path and build a clean 0.8/1.21.1 instance. Ensure every player selected NeoForge rather than Forge.
Friends cannot connect
- Confirm the server process is running and has reached its ready message.
- Check that friends are using the public address, not the server’s private LAN address.
- Verify firewall permission and router forwarding for TCP 25565.
- Test from outside the home network; an internal test can succeed even when internet forwarding is broken.
- If the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, use a managed tunnel or hosting service instead of repeatedly changing router rules.
The server stops or becomes unresponsive under load
Inspect logs for memory pressure, repeated errors and long pauses. Check available host memory, disk space and CPU contention. Lower view or simulation distance, reduce unnecessary background services, and make sure backups are not exhausting the disk. Because no Cosmic Frontiers capacity benchmark is published, measure the behavior of your actual world and player count.
An update seems to have damaged the world
Stop the server, restore the pre-update backup to a separate test directory and return to the previous known-good release. Never overwrite the backup while experimenting. For a 0.7.x save, continue using the 0.7 instance unless the project later documents a supported conversion.
Safe update routine
- Record the current Minecraft, NeoForge and Cosmic Frontiers versions.
- Tell players the maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the complete server directory and world to dated backup storage.
- Read the new release notes, especially migration warnings.
- Install the new release in a separate directory and use a copied world for testing.
- Update client instances to the same release and test joining, machines, dimensions and backups.
- Switch the live server only after the test succeeds; retain the old directory until recovery is no longer needed.
This process costs extra disk space but prevents a failed loader or incompatible registry from destroying the only playable copy.
Quick Recap
First-launch checklist
- Java 21 is selected in Prism and used by the server process.
- Server and clients use Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge and the identical Cosmic Frontiers release.
- The server was extracted into its own writable directory.
- The matching NeoForge launcher was generated when the archive did not include one.
eula.txtcontainseula=trueafter you accepted the EULA.- The server reaches its ready or Done message before players connect.
server.properties, whitelist and operator permissions are intentional.- Backups exist outside the live server directory and have been tested.
- TCP port 25565 is allowed and forwarded when remote players need direct access.
- Any 0.7.x world remains separate from the 0.8+ installation.
