A corrupted training example can have low loss because training loss measures how well a model matches the label it was given—not whether that label is true. If the model learns a wrong label, its loss on that example can fall even while its prediction is factually incorrect.
What training loss tells you—and what it does not
For supervised learning, the training objective compares a model’s prediction with the supplied target. When the prediction matches that target, the loss is low. The target may be a mistaken annotation, however, so low loss only shows that the model fits the supplied label; it does not certify that the label is correct.
Google Research describes how deep networks can memorize training-label noise, reducing loss on incorrect labels while potentially harming performance on clean test data. Its August 2020 summary notes: “Unfortunately, large training datasets almost always contain examples with inaccurate or incorrect labels.” That observation is not a prevalence estimate for any particular dataset. How a mislabeled example can become low-loss
During training, optimization adjusts the model to reduce error against the labels in the dataset. Some patterns are easier to fit than others, and a model may initially learn consistent patterns before fitting harder examples. With continued training, it can also memorize an incorrect label. Once its prediction agrees with that wrong target, the example’s ordinary training loss can be small.

This is a possible pattern, not a rule that every clean example is learned first or every corrupted example eventually becomes easy. A 2022 study highlights limits of learning-based noise detection: rare clean examples can be harder to memorize than common corrupted ones. Therefore, an example’s loss depends on the data, training stage, and model—not just whether its label is correct. Zhu et al., ICML 2022.
Why high loss is an imperfect corruption test
A high per-example loss can help identify examples the current model has not fit, but it is not a reliable clean-versus-corrupted verdict on its own. A mislabeled example may have high loss before it is memorized and low loss afterward. Conversely, a legitimate but unusual or underrepresented example may remain difficult for the model to fit.

Detection also depends on the kind of label noise. Synthetic random labels used in controlled experiments are not necessarily distributed like labels gathered from the web. Google Research explicitly distinguishes these settings, so results from one should not be treated as a universal account of the other.

Ordinary loss is a scalar measure of prediction error against a target. Curvature describes how the loss changes around an example as model parameters vary; it is a different diagnostic. A 2024 ICML study averaged curvature around training examples over epochs as a memorization measure and reported high curvature for mislabeled samples in its experiments. That finding does not imply that those samples must have high ordinary training loss. Garg, Ravikumar, and Roy, ICML 2024.

What researchers use beyond a single loss value
Different approaches address different parts of the problem. Some try to flag suspect examples, some correct labels using trusted information, and others limit the influence of noisy examples during training. Their assumptions matter as much as their results.
| Approach | What it does | Key requirement or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Robust loss functions | Change the training objective to reduce sensitivity to noisy labels. | Robustness claims depend on the assumptions and task. Studies report that some robust losses can underfit; they are not universal prescriptions. Ghosh, Kumar, and Sastry, AAAI 2017; Ma et al., ICML 2020. |
| Trusted clean examples | Use a small set of trusted labels to help correct noisy labels. | Requires examples believed to be clean. Hendrycks and coauthors report experiments across vision and natural-language tasks, including severe noise; those results do not guarantee the same outcome for every dataset. Hendrycks et al., NeurIPS 2018. |
| Feature-neighbor detection | Use local voting and ranking among neighboring feature representations to find suspicious labels. | Designed to avoid relying on a model trained on noisy labels, but tuning and performance remain task-dependent. Zhu et al., ICML 2022. |
| Aggregate gradient influence control | Control the collective effect of examples on the average gradient instead of judging each only by its individual loss. | Targets aggregate influence; it is not simply a per-example corruption detector. Liu et al., ICML 2021. |
| Curvature across training | Track loss curvature around examples over epochs as a memorization-related signal. | Curvature is distinct from ordinary loss, and reported detection results are tied to the study’s experiments. Garg, Ravikumar, and Roy, ICML 2024. |
Why corruption type changes the interpretation
The clearest explanation applies to label or supervision corruption in supervised learning: a model can fit a wrong target and thereby lower its loss. “Corrupted data” can also mean altered inputs or poisoning, which are related but not interchangeable problems. A poisoned input may cause a confidently wrong prediction; that does not mean the example must have high loss. The methods above address particular settings and do not settle every form of corruption, model, or training procedure.
