If Android says an SD card is corrupted or needs formatting, cancel the prompt and do not format it. Formatting deletes the card’s data. First check whether a backup exists, then determine whether the card is portable or adopted storage and whether the phone or a computer can read it. For a stable, removable portable card, a computer-based recovery scan may help; recovery is not guaranteed.
Before troubleshooting, protect the data
Decline any request from Android or a computer to format the card. Google warns that formatting permanently deletes data, and Samsung likewise says it erases the card’s contents (Google Android Help; Samsung Support). Do not save new files to the card, install recovery software onto it, or save recovered files back onto it. New data can overwrite content you are trying to recover.
If the data is irreplaceable and the card is physically damaged, disconnects repeatedly, or is only readable intermittently, stop trying repeated scans. Further use may reduce the chance of recovery; consider a specialist assessment instead.

Before attempting recovery, check the Google Account backup for the phone and Google Photos from another device or browser session. Google device backup covers selected data, while photos and videos depend on Google Photos backup settings. It does not guarantee that every file stored on an SD card was backed up (Google Android Help: Back up or restore data on your Android device).

Find out whether Android detects the card
Check the phone’s storage settings before relying on a file manager. Menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer, but look under Settings for Storage or the SD card entry.
- Card appears in Settings but not in Files: Google notes that a card formatted as internal storage may not appear in Files by Google. The missing file-manager entry does not by itself prove the card is corrupted (Google Android Help).
- Card does not appear in Settings: Turn off the phone if its instructions require that before removing the card. Reseat it, check for visible debris or damage, and test it in another compatible device. Samsung lists reseating and trying another device among its troubleshooting steps (Samsung Support).
If another device or computer asks to format the card, cancel. Recognition by one device does not make formatting safe.

Choose the recovery path based on storage mode

Recover files from a readable portable card with a computer
For a portable card that remains readable, CGSecurity recommends connecting a phone memory card to a computer with a USB card reader. Its PhotoRec utility can scan memory cards and uses read-only access for recovery. Save any recovered files to a different drive, never to the card being scanned (CGSecurity: PhotoRec; CGSecurity: PhotoRec FAQ).

- Connect it to a computer using a compatible USB microSD card reader.
- Use recovery software that can scan the card without writing to it. PhotoRec is one documented option; follow its documentation for your computer’s operating system.
- Choose a separate computer drive as the destination for recovered files.
- Review the recovered files before making any decision to reuse or replace the card.
PhotoRec uses file signatures to find data, so recovered files may not retain their original filenames or folder structure. A scan may not recover everything, and a readable card is not proof that all data remains intact.

Do not treat adopted storage like a portable card
Android’s adopted-storage mode configures a card as internal storage, intended to remain with the phone rather than move between devices. Samsung says adopted cards are encrypted and cannot be removed for use elsewhere without resetting the phone and formatting the card; Samsung devices do not offer adoptable storage (Google Android Help; Samsung Support).
If the card was set up as internal storage, keep it with the original working phone. Do not reset the phone or format the card as a recovery experiment. Ask the phone maker about model-specific options before taking either action.

When to stop and seek help
A card that is visibly damaged, repeatedly disconnects, or cannot be read reliably is a poor candidate for repeated do-it-yourself scans. Samsung advises replacing a malfunctioning card after backing up what can be recovered; that is not a reason to format before recovery (Samsung Support). If the files are valuable, stop using the card and seek specialist assessment rather than continuing attempts that could overwrite or further stress it.
