CoreProtect is an audit and rollback plugin for Minecraft servers. When its logging is enabled, it records selected activity with the account, location, time and action needed for an authorized administrator to investigate or reverse changes. It can cover far more than block griefing: containers, inventories, item transfers, entities, chat, commands, signs, sessions and username changes are all represented by documented event families.

What it records on your server is not universal. Per-world settings, blacklist rules, the CoreProtect version and the behavior of each event category determine which records exist. Treat CoreProtect as a configurable audit trail, not as a guarantee that every server action has been captured.

What CoreProtect records

CoreProtect stores activity that can answer three administrative questions: what happened, where did it happen, and which account was involved? Staff can then search matching records, inspect them in-game, preview a rollback, reverse changes, or restore them. The exact data available depends on the event type and your configuration.

There is no authoritative single number for how many events every CoreProtect installation logs. Documentation enumerates action families rather than promising one universal count, and versions and configuration can change coverage.

Blocks and world changes

Placed and broken blocks

The a:block action searches block changes. Use a:+block when you need placements only, such as finding who built a wall, and a:-block for breaks, such as investigating a missing door or a mined section. These records are the usual starting point for grief investigations because they associate the changed location with an account and timestamp.

Natural and related changes

CoreProtect also documents natural block breakage and related block changes. A tree falling, a block being affected by a game mechanic, or another non-player change may therefore appear differently from a direct player break. Do not assume that every visible change was made by a player; inspect the recorded action and actor before assigning responsibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interactions with blocks

a:click searches player interactions. The API’s interaction logging records the block material and block data at a location. This is useful for investigating doors, buttons, levers, containers and other interactable blocks when the relevant logging is enabled.

An interaction record is not the same as proof that an inventory changed. A button press may trigger redstone without moving an item, and opening a chest may produce an interaction record even when nothing was taken. For a missing-item case, search container, inventory and item activity as well as clicks.

Chests, containers and inventories

Container deposits and withdrawals

a:container covers items put into or taken from chests and similar containers. Narrow the result with a:+container for deposits and a:-container for withdrawals. This distinction is useful when a shared storage room is missing materials: withdrawals identify removal activity, while deposits can show where an item entered the chest.

Player inventory records

a:inventory covers items added to or removed from player inventories. It complements container records. For example, taking diamonds from a chest may create a container withdrawal and an inventory addition. Looking at both sides helps distinguish a chest action from an item that was already in the player’s inventory.

Item entities and automated transfers

a:item covers world-item transactions such as drops, throws, pickups, deposits and withdrawals. The documented activity also includes transfers involving hoppers, droppers and dispensers. These records matter when an item moved through automation rather than through a direct chest interaction.

Use location and time limits when tracing a transfer. A broad global search can produce many entries from farms and sorting systems, while a small radius around the storage block is easier to interpret.

Kills, deaths and spawns

a:kill searches mobs or animals killed. CoreProtect’s action categories also include entity kills, player kills and entity spawns, and the project description says entity deaths can include detailed death reasons. This can help distinguish a player kill from environmental damage or another cause when the server has recorded the event.

Entity logging is particularly useful near protected builds and farms. A spawn entry can show that an entity appeared in an area, while a death record can identify the account or recorded cause associated with its removal. The available detail still depends on enabled logging and the CoreProtect version in use.

Chat, commands and signs

Chat messages

a:chat records player chat messages. This allows an authorized administrator to search what was said, who sent it and when, subject to the server’s logging configuration and applicable privacy rules.

Commands

a:command records commands. Command history can establish when an administrative or gameplay command was entered, but it should be handled as sensitive information: commands may contain coordinates, private arguments, tokens or other data that should not be exposed to ordinary staff.

Sign text

a:sign records text written on signs. Prefix filtering can narrow searches for chat, commands and signs, which is useful when you remember the beginning of a message or sign line but not the full text.

Sessions and username changes

a:session covers logins and logouts. Session records establish when an account connected, helping correlate a block change or container withdrawal with an online period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

a:username covers username changes. This matters when a player changes names and an administrator needs to relate older records to the account’s later identity. Treat a username as an identifier recorded at a point in time, not as a substitute for your server’s account-management controls.

How to inspect records in game

Use the inspector for a location check

  1. Run /co inspect to toggle CoreProtect’s inspection mode.
  2. Interact with the block or location you want to examine.
  3. Read the returned history to identify recorded actions, actors and times.
  4. Run /co inspect again when you are finished, so normal interactions do not continue generating inspection output.

Inspection is best for a quick, focused check at a single block. Use a lookup when you need filters, a wider area or a repeatable investigation.

Build a targeted lookup

/co lookup accepts filters for user, time, radius or world, action, included or excluded materials, entities or users, and message prefixes. Common forms include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • u:<user> limits results to one user.
  • t:<time> limits the time window.
  • r:<radius> limits the search around your position; a world or global target can be used for broader searches.
  • a:<action> selects an event family such as a:-container or a:command.
  • i:<include> includes specified blocks, items, entities or users.
  • e:<exclude> excludes specified blocks, items, entities or users.
  • f:<prefix> filters chat, command or sign text by a prefix.

Combine the narrowest useful filters first. For example, a container-withdrawal search for one user in a small radius and recent time window is more actionable than a global search across every event.

Count, summarize and preview

Add #count when you need the number of matching records, #summary for material summaries, and #preview to see what a rollback would affect before changing the world. A preview is a safety step, not a replacement for a backup.

Rollback and restore

/co rollback reverses matching changes. /co restore reapplies changes that were previously reversed or otherwise match the selected criteria. Both commands operate on records that match your filters; they do not magically reconstruct activity that was never logged.

  1. Preserve or verify a current server backup before making an administrative change.
  2. Run a narrowly scoped lookup and inspect the matching entries.
  3. Use #preview to confirm the affected area and materials.
  4. Apply the rollback or restore with the same carefully checked filters.
  5. Inspect the result in game and record what was changed for your staff audit trail.

Restrict rollback, restore, purge and lookup permissions according to your server’s operating procedures. Reliable backups, limited staff access, documented command procedures and routine storage monitoring provide a safer workflow than relying on rollback alone.

Why a server may not show an event

Per-world configuration

CoreProtect can use per-world configuration files. A category enabled in one world may behave differently in another, so confirm the settings for the world where the event occurred.

Blacklist rules

blacklist.txt can disable logging for named users, commands, blocks, entities and filtered item or container causes. A missing entry may therefore reflect an intentional exclusion rather than a failed search.

Version-dependent filtering

Block blacklist support requires CoreProtect v23 or newer, while entity filtering requires v24 or newer according to the documentation. Check the installed version before promising that a particular exclusion or filter is available.

Different event categories behave differently

The API documentation notes that not every logging category emits the same pre-log event callback. Chat and session logging are examples that do not provide that event emission. A plugin integrating with CoreProtect should use the appropriate lookup or dedicated API method instead of assuming every category behaves like a block event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the API and integrating responsibly

The API exposes dedicated methods for interactions, containers, inventories, items, chat, commands, signs, sessions and usernames, alongside entity and block lookups. Integration code should select the method that matches the event being investigated. Treat callback availability, action names and version compatibility as part of your integration contract, and test against the exact CoreProtect version running on your server.

Keep access to communication and command records especially narrow. These logs can contain private conversations, administrative arguments or information that players did not expect ordinary moderators to read. Define who may query them, how long records are retained and when old data is purged.

A practical investigation workflow

  1. Define the question: identify the missing block, item, message or entity and the approximate time.
  2. Start with /co inspect if the location is known.
  3. Run a focused /co lookup using user, time, radius or world and the relevant action.
  4. Add include, exclude or prefix filters only when they reduce noise.
  5. Compare related categories: container plus inventory for chest losses, item plus container for transfers, and session plus block or command records for account timelines.
  6. Use #count or #summary when a large result set needs structure.
  7. Preview any corrective action, verify a backup, then use rollback or restore only with authorized permissions.
  8. Document the query and outcome so another administrator can reproduce the decision.

What CoreProtect can and cannot establish

CoreProtect can provide a time-and-location-based record of selected server activity and support targeted correction of matching changes. It cannot prove an event that was disabled by configuration, excluded by a blacklist, outside the installed version’s capabilities or never emitted by the relevant integration path.

Use the records as an administrative audit trail. Correlate them with your server’s permissions, moderation notes and backups, and avoid treating one isolated entry as context-free proof of intent.
