If CorelDRAW has stopped working, first note whether it crashes as the program starts, during a particular action, or only when you open one drawing. Then try Corel’s workspace reset; if that does not help, use the installer’s Repair option. Neither step is guaranteed to resolve every crash, and the reset removes workspace customizations.
Identify when CorelDRAW crashes
The failure pattern helps you choose what to try next, but it does not by itself prove the cause. Before changing settings, record your CorelDRAW Graphics Suite version and build, your Windows version, and what you were doing when the crash occurred.
- At launch: Does CorelDRAW close before you can work in the application?
- During one operation: Does it stop working when you use a particular feature or command?
- With one drawing: Do other drawings open, while the same CDR file triggers the crash?
These are distinct situations: a report about a feature-specific crash in CorelDRAW 2017 does not establish the cause of another user’s launch problem, for example. Individual community reports are not evidence of a universal cause.

Corel’s documented first step is to reset the current workspace before repairing the installation. Close CorelDRAW, then start it again while holding F8. If a confirmation prompt appears, accept it. Corel’s help page describes this as restoring the workspace to default settings: CorelDRAW Help: Modify and repair installations.

This reset also removes workspace preferences and customizations, including custom appearance and command-bar changes. If those settings matter to you, consider whether you can recreate them before proceeding. Corel documents the reset behavior in Save and restore defaults.
Repair the CorelDRAW installation
If resetting the workspace does not help, try the installation repair option. The exact labels and screens can differ by Windows and CorelDRAW release.

- Close CorelDRAW and other open applications.
- Open Windows Control Panel and select Uninstall a program.
- Select the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite entry, then choose Repair. If the installer opens with a Modify option instead, select it and then choose Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts to complete the repair, then reopen CorelDRAW and check whether the original failure still occurs.
Corel says Repair can address missing or corrupt program files and inaccurate shortcuts or registry entries. It targets the installation rather than workspace preferences; it is not a promise that every crash will be fixed. See Corel’s installation repair instructions.
If only one CDR drawing causes the crash
Protect the drawing before trying recovery steps: work on a copy and do not overwrite the only version. If other drawings open normally, that points to a file-specific symptom, but it does not establish why that file fails.

A Microsoft Q&A answer from 2015 concerning CorelDRAW X5 and one drawing suggested saving a backup in another CDR version or exporting and importing CMX. That is old, anecdotal advice—not a verified current fix—so treat it as an optional recovery attempt on a copy, not a dependable repair. If basic attempts fail and the file is important, contact Corel Support or a qualified recovery professional.

- Your Windows version.
- The point at which the crash occurs and any error message shown.
- Whether other drawings open successfully.
- What troubleshooting steps you have already tried and what happened.
Do not assume graphics drivers, fonts, add-ins, permissions, or security software are responsible unless your diagnostics or a reliable source establishes that connection.
