There is no developer-published minimum RAM or CPU specification for a Core Keeper dedicated server in the available documentation. Steam’s 8 GB RAM figure is the Windows game-client requirement, not a server requirement. For planning, a recent ServerScout guide estimates about 2 GB RAM for a small vanilla group, 3–4 GB for larger or heavily explored worlds, and roughly 6 GB for busy modded play. Those numbers are third-party estimates, not guarantees or benchmark results.

A practical server needs enough headroom for simultaneous players, world exploration, mods and the operating system. CPU performance per core can become more important than simply adding memory. You can self-host on a suitable PC or server, deploy community container tooling, or rent managed hosting; the right choice depends on uptime, latency, maintenance and how much control you need.

What is officially known about Core Keeper server hardware?

The evidence available for the dedicated server describes installation and configuration, but does not publish an official RAM minimum, CPU minimum, or hardware benchmark. That means any exact specification presented as a guaranteed requirement is overstated.

Steam lists 8 GB of RAM for the Windows game client (the listing is from 2023). A client renders the game and runs on a player’s desktop, while a dedicated server runs headlessly and handles world simulation, connections and saves. The client figure therefore cannot be reused as a server specification.

The safest approach is to size from your expected workload, leave spare capacity, then observe the machine while people play. A large explored world, several players entering new areas at once, mods and other programs competing for resources can all change usage.

How much RAM does a Core Keeper server need?

ServerScout provides useful starting points, but labels them as estimates rather than official requirements. Its ranges are planning guidance for a normally configured machine, not independently verified benchmarks. Actual consumption depends on world size, active players, mods, the operating system and other services sharing the host.

Scenario ServerScout RAM estimate CPU guidance in the same guide How to interpret it
1–4 players, vanilla About 2 GB Two fast cores A starting point for a small world; keep additional memory for the operating system and background services.
Five or six players, or a more developed world About 3 GB More per-core performance is preferable Exploration and accumulated world activity can push usage above a minimal small-group setup.
Seven to 10 players About 4 GB Three to four fast cores A planning estimate for a busier vanilla session, not a promise that every world will fit comfortably.
Busy modded setup Approximately 6 GB Three to four fast cores or better Mods vary widely; measure the actual installation and leave headroom for spikes.

These values come from ServerScout’s undated guide accessed in October 2026. They are not developer specifications, and the page does not describe an official measurement method. Treat them as a sizing baseline: start above the estimate when the host also runs other applications, then check real usage during a full session.

Why world activity matters

A newly created world and a long-running, extensively explored world do not necessarily place the same load on a server. New areas may be generated as players travel, while a developed world contains more persistent state to manage. Concurrent players, automation, enemies and mod code can create short-term CPU or memory spikes even when average usage looks low.

How much headroom should you leave?

Do not allocate every available megabyte to the game process. The operating system, file cache, monitoring tools and any voice, backup or web services also need memory. If the host begins swapping to disk, players may experience pauses even when the nominal RAM estimate appears sufficient. A host with more memory than the estimate is useful only if the CPU, storage and network remain adequate as well.

What CPU does a Core Keeper server need?

No official CPU minimum or clock-speed threshold is published for the dedicated server. ServerScout’s third-party guidance favors a few fast cores: roughly two for a small group and three to four for heavier scenarios. The important qualification is per-core performance, not a universal GHz number.

Simulation work is not automatically improved by installing a large number of slow cores. A modern desktop or server processor with strong single-thread performance can be a better fit than an older many-core chip. At the same time, the host still needs spare capacity for the operating system and any other workloads.

CPU symptoms to watch for

  • Players report delayed interactions or movement while one or more CPU cores remain near full utilization.
  • Generation of new areas causes recurring pauses, suggesting the workload is CPU-bound during exploration.
  • Performance is acceptable with one or two players but degrades sharply as the group grows.
  • The game process competes with another demanding application running on the same computer.

Use the operating system’s process monitor during an active session rather than relying on a specification sheet. Check total CPU use and per-core load, because an average across all cores can hide one saturated core.

How many players can a Core Keeper server hold?

Player capacity is controlled by software settings and can differ by package or configuration. The Core Keeper Codex reference for package version 1.2.1.5, verified on September 7, 2026, lists a default maximum of eight players and warns that raising the limit may require more resources or destabilize a session.

A separate escapingnetwork community Docker configuration lists a default MAX_PLAYERS value of 10. That difference demonstrates why there is no safe universal cap to quote: inspect the configuration shipped with the version you installed.

Networking, ports and cross-platform connections

The Codex reference says that configuring a port enables direct IP connections and that the port must be open for that mode. Without the setting, the server uses Steam relay and does not accept direct IP connections. The same reference says setting a port effectively enables cross-play, but platform support can change; check the current release notes when cross-platform access is a deciding factor.

Relay versus direct IP

  • Steam relay: avoids exposing a direct listening port and is the fallback described by the Codex reference when no port is configured.
  • Direct IP: requires a configured, reachable port and appropriate firewall or router rules. It may provide a more direct path, but it also creates additional network administration and security responsibilities.

Before sharing an address, confirm which connection method the installed package expects. Never publish a connection code or IP publicly unless you understand who can join and have a current backup of the world.

Choosing a hosting model

Option Advantages Trade-offs Best fit
Self-host on a PC or server Maximum control over files and configuration; no separate rental contract; hardware can be repurposed. The machine, power, internet connection and updates are your responsibility. The world is unavailable when the host is offline unless another system runs it. Groups with an always-on computer and someone comfortable with maintenance.
Community container tooling Repeatable deployment, environment-variable configuration and easier isolation from other services. Container images are community projects; defaults, update timing and device performance vary. Image support does not prove that a particular device can handle every player count. Operators already using Docker who want a reproducible setup.
Managed game hosting Persistent availability, provider-managed hardware and usually simpler restarts and access controls. Ongoing cost, less control over the underlying machine and dependence on the provider’s backup, update and support policies. Groups that want the world online without maintaining a home server.

For any option, compare the actual CPU and RAM allocation rather than vague “unlimited” wording. Also check the server region, player limit, backup and restore tools, restart controls, port access, update process and cancellation terms. No provider or plan has been independently tested here, so those details must be verified before purchase.

If you would rather not run a machine yourself, Godlike.Host offers Core Keeper server hosting with a Pterodactyl-based game panel, up to three free backups a day with restore, and 24/7 support by live chat or ticket. Self-hosting: installation and first-run checklist

The community-maintained Core Keeper dedicated-server guide documents installation through Steam or SteamCMD, the server process, and the locations used for configuration and world data. The exact menus and paths can change with package updates, so use the labels shown by your installed release.

  1. Choose the host. Select a machine that can remain online for the desired hours. Begin with the RAM and CPU planning estimates, then reserve capacity for the operating system and any other services.
  2. Install the dedicated-server package. In Steam, use the dedicated-server tool supplied for Core Keeper, or use the SteamCMD installation method documented for the package. Do not install only the ordinary game client and assume it provides the same server process.
  3. Launch it once. The first run creates the required configuration and save structure. A worlds folder may not appear until the server has created its first save.
  4. Create or select a world. Confirm that the process reaches a running state and that a world save is written before inviting anyone.
  5. Set player and connection options. Review the installed configuration’s player-limit default. If you need direct IP access, configure a port and open the corresponding firewall or router rule; otherwise use the relay behavior supported by the package.
  6. Test locally. Join from the host or a nearby client, verify that the world loads, and check that the intended number of players can connect before distributing access details.
  7. Back up the world. Stop the server cleanly, copy the world data to separate storage, and retain more than one dated backup. The setup guide specifically recommends backing up before sharing a game code publicly.
  8. Monitor a real session. Observe per-core CPU use, memory pressure, disk activity and network stability while players explore. Increase resources or reduce the player limit if the host approaches saturation.

Can a Raspberry Pi or other ARM device run the server?

The escapingnetwork GitHub project documents container image variants for Raspberry Pi 3, Raspberry Pi 4, Raspberry Pi 5, M-series Mac and other ARM-capable devices. That establishes image availability, not a performance guarantee. It does not show that every listed device can serve every world size, mod set or player count smoothly.

On a small ARM host, begin with a few players and a fresh or modest world. Watch sustained CPU load, memory pressure and storage behavior during exploration rather than judging suitability from the model name alone. If performance is inconsistent, move the world to a faster host or lower the concurrent-player target.

How to monitor and resize a server

Measure the workload you actually have

  • Record memory use at idle, during normal play and while several players enter unexplored areas.
  • Check individual CPU cores, not just the overall percentage.
  • Watch for swap or paging activity, which indicates insufficient available memory.
  • Check disk space and save times; a nearly full or slow disk can make reliable backups difficult.
  • Measure latency from the players’ locations, not only from the host’s local network.

Respond to the result

  • Memory pressure: close unrelated services, add RAM or move the server to a host with a larger allocation.
  • One saturated core: use a faster processor, reduce simultaneous players or limit heavy world activity and mods.
  • Network delay: choose a host geographically central to the group, prefer a stable wired connection where practical, and investigate router or port configuration.
  • Unstable sessions after raising the cap: return to the previous player limit, test incrementally and confirm the package’s warning about additional resource needs.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Using the 8 GB client requirement as the server minimum

The Steam number describes running the game client on Windows. It does not establish how much memory a headless dedicated server needs. Use it only for the computer on which someone is actually playing the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a player-limit setting is a performance guarantee

A configuration value is a ceiling, not a promise of stability. The Codex reference warns that higher limits can require more resources or destabilize a session, and the Docker project’s different default shows that packages may disagree.

Skipping the first save before looking for world files

The community setup guide notes that the worlds folder may not appear until the first save. Start the server, create or load a world, stop it cleanly, then locate and back up the generated data.

Sharing access before making a backup

Make a dated copy of the world before distributing a game code or direct connection details. If a configuration change or unwanted join damages the world, a verified backup is your recovery path.

Choosing hardware by core count alone

ServerScout’s estimate emphasizes fast cores. A system with many slower cores may perform worse for this workload than a smaller number of faster cores, so monitor per-core usage before upgrading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Core Keeper has no confirmed official dedicated-server RAM or CPU minimum in the available references. For initial planning, ServerScout’s estimates range from about 2 GB RAM and two fast cores for one to four players to roughly 4 GB and three to four fast cores for seven to 10 players, with around 6 GB suggested for busy modded play. Start conservatively, leave headroom, test your actual world and player count, and choose self-hosting, containers or managed hosting according to the uptime and maintenance trade-offs you can accept.
