Core Keeper has two fast-travel systems: Ancient Waypoints that you find and activate, and craftable Portals made at an Octarine Workbench. Waypoints are free to activate. Portals can be placed around the world, but each newly placed Portal must charge before it can send you elsewhere. Stand beside a ready Portal, press E, and choose an activated destination.
For co-op, activated Waypoints and Portals belong to a shared travel network. Every player in the party can use that network, although the host’s world file remains the authority for boss kills, buildings, and other world progress.

These are not separate character-only systems. Activated Waypoints and placed Portals operate as nodes in one travel network, so a player can select an available Waypoint or Portal as a destination from another ready node.
What Ancient Waypoints do
Find and activate a Waypoint
Ancient Waypoints are already present in the world rather than crafted from player materials. They are commonly positioned near significant areas, such as boss arenas, making them valuable return points after an expedition. Walk up to a Waypoint and use its interaction prompt to activate it. Activation is free.

Once activated, the Waypoint is available to your party instead of only to the character who touched it. A player who discovers a Waypoint can therefore unlock a useful destination for everyone currently playing in that world.
Waypoint placement and relocation limits
Community reports describe digging up some Waypoints and reinstalling them with sufficiently strong mining power. That behavior is not confirmed by an official source in the available documentation, so treat a Waypoint as fixed unless your own game version clearly permits the interaction. The same caution applies to reports that a Waypoint in front of The Core cannot be destroyed.
Do not plan a route around moving a Waypoint until you have tested the action safely. If the interaction is unavailable, use a crafted Portal for a custom endpoint instead.
How Portals work
Crafting station and availability
Portals are a late-game travel option crafted at the Octarine Workbench. They are intended for permanent links between your base, distant biomes, and boss arenas. After crafting, place each Portal at the location where you want a travel node.
The exact recipe has changed between versions and is reported differently by community references. Two published lists are in circulation:

A Steam announcement for version 1.3 reportedly reduced Portal crafting costs but did not provide the numbers covered here. Because the two lists conflict, open the Octarine Workbench in your own game and use the displayed recipe as the authority for your installed version. Do not gather materials based solely on an older web guide.

Charging after placement
A newly placed Portal does not become usable immediately. The most consistently reported charge duration is 10 minutes; another guide reports 20 minutes. The Fandom wiki’s version history says a patch identified as 1.0.0.1 reduced the charge from 20 to 10 minutes. That history explains why older guides still show 20 minutes.
The available material does not establish an official 1.3-era charge value. If your game displays a timer or behaves differently, follow that in-game state rather than assuming a number from a previous version.
Which end must be ready?
The Portal you travel from must be charged. A secondary guide states that the destination does not have to be ready, which creates a practical risk: you may arrive at a destination that cannot immediately send you back. For a new route, charge both ends before relying on it for a one-way expedition or a co-op rescue plan.
How to use a Core Keeper Portal
- Place a Portal. Select the crafted Portal from your hotbar and put it at the desired base, biome entrance, or arena staging area.
- Wait for charging. Leave the Portal in place until its charge completes according to the timer or state shown by your game version.
- Stand beside the Portal. Move close enough for its interaction prompt to appear.
- Press E. The Portal travel interface opens on the standard keyboard control described by the version 1.0 guide.
- Select a destination. Choose an activated Ancient Waypoint or a connected Portal from the list.
- Confirm the trip. The character is transferred to the selected node. If you intend to return, make sure the destination has also finished charging.
Controller bindings or a remapped keyboard can change the displayed interaction key. Use the key shown by your current control settings if it differs from E.

Building a useful Portal network
Start with a home hub
Place your first custom Portal in a central base room with storage, healing supplies, and crafting stations. A hub makes the network easy to understand and gives the group a predictable arrival point. Leave clear floor space around the Portal so several players can interact with it without blocking one another.
Choose destinations that remove long journeys
Portals are most valuable where walking time is repeatedly paid. Good candidates include:
- A distant biome entrance that the group visits for a specific resource.
- A boss-arena staging area where you need to restock, repair, or recover after a defeat.
- A mining outpost far from the starting area.
- A junction connecting several branches of your explored map.
An Ancient Waypoint already close to a boss may be sufficient for occasional trips. Reserve crafted Portals for destinations whose travel time or repeat frequency justifies the materials and charging delay.
Charge both ends before announcing a route
When a Portal pair is new, place and charge the remote node first if the trip will begin from your base, then charge the base node before returning to normal play. Testing both directions prevents a player from discovering that the return endpoint is not ready after an otherwise successful arrival.

Portal lists are easier to scan when every destination has a clear location name. Use names such as “Base,” “Desert Mine,” or “Boss Arena” rather than personal nicknames that only one player understands. Put signs or map markers beside each physical Portal as a second confirmation, especially when several nodes are in the same room.

Keep an unplanned expedition from breaking the network
Do not dismantle a working Portal to move it during a co-op session unless everyone knows the route will be unavailable while the replacement charges. A temporary staging Portal can be safer than relocating the only connection to a remote region.

What is shared
When one player activates an Ancient Waypoint, it becomes usable by the party. Portals and Waypoints then appear as destinations within the same shared network, allowing any party member to select an activated node. A player does not need to be the original discoverer or crafter to use the route.
What is saved by the host
Characters retain their own skills and gear when they join a multiplayer session. World progress—including boss kills and structures—is saved only to the host’s world file. Decide which player’s world is the long-term home before spending time building a Portal network or defeating progression bosses.
If the host changes, the group may be entering a different world state even when everyone brings the same character. Portals built in one host’s world do not automatically create equivalent structures in another player’s world.
Co-op session checklist
- Confirm whose world is hosting before crafting expensive travel infrastructure.
- Activate every Ancient Waypoint the group passes, even if only one player expects to return.
- Tell the party which Portal is the home hub and which destinations are still charging.
- Keep one player near the departure node until the traveler confirms arrival, especially on a first trip.
- Record the host’s world and the Portal names before ending a long session.
Portal troubleshooting
The Portal does not appear in the destination list
- Check that the destination is a placed Portal rather than an item still in a chest or inventory.
- Wait for its charge to complete; a newly placed node is not immediately available.
- Verify that you are interacting with a Portal or activated Waypoint, not a decorative object.
- Ask the host to confirm that you are in the world where the node was built.
The timer is longer than expected
Older material reports 20 minutes, while the version history cited above reports a reduction to 10 minutes in patch 1.0.0.1. A different timer can therefore indicate an older build, a later balance change, or a guide that retained outdated information. Use the timer your installed version actually shows and check the game’s current patch notes when available.

I arrived but cannot travel back
Charge the destination Portal before depending on it as a return point. The documented behavior is that the departure Portal must be ready; the destination may still be unready. Carry supplies for a walk-back route until both ends have been tested.
The recipe does not match an online list
Compare the Workbench display with the two reported lists rather than assuming your game is broken. Portal costs reportedly changed in version 1.3, and no single current number is confirmed by the material available here. Gather the quantities shown in your own crafting interface.

- Make sure the player is in the same host world and party.
- Have the discoverer activate the Waypoint or finish placing the Portal.
- Check whether the node is still charging.
- Leave and re-enter the interaction screen after the host confirms the node is active.
A Waypoint cannot be moved or destroyed
Relocation and indestructibility claims are community reports, not established mechanics in the available official documentation. If no mining or destruction interaction appears, leave the Waypoint in place and create a Portal for a movable destination.
Planning materials and progression
Do not confuse Portal materials with a general travel fee
The listed bars, planks, parts, and gemstones are crafting inputs for the Portal itself. Ancient Waypoints do not consume those materials when activated. After a Portal is built and charged, travel is described as selecting a destination rather than paying a per-trip resource cost.
When to craft your first Portal
Craft one when the Octarine Workbench is available and the group has a destination that will be revisited often. A Portal is less useful for a single scouting trip because its materials are substantial and the new node has to charge. For one-off exploration, an activated Ancient Waypoint may provide the needed return point without consuming Portal components.
Prepare a remote site before placement
Clear enemies, make a small shelter, and leave room for several players before placing the Portal. Charging in an exposed location can leave the group defending an expensive object while waiting. A chest with food, tools, and spare equipment near the remote node also reduces the cost of a failed expedition, although it does not change the Portal’s network rules.

For a live world, the safest procedure is to inspect the Octarine Workbench recipe, read the Portal’s charge state, and test both travel directions before committing the route to a major co-op expedition.
