Most Core Keeper multiplayer failures come from one of four causes: the players are on different game versions, the platforms are not compatible, the lobby is not being discovered, or mods do not match. Update every installation first, then identify the exact error before changing router settings. Steam host-and-play uses Steam networking and does not require port forwarding; a dedicated server follows different port rules.
Start by identifying the failure
Ask the host and every joining player to record the exact message, not just that multiplayer “doesn’t work.” Also note who is hosting, the store or console platform in use, the game version shown on each installation, whether cross-play is enabled, and whether any mods are active. Those details separate a product-compatibility limit from a lobby-discovery problem, a network timeout, or a mod-loading failure.

What common messages usually indicate

Do not start by forwarding random router ports. First establish which connection method you are using and whether the platforms can play together at all.
1. Update every installation before changing network settings
Bring the host, every client, and any dedicated-server package to the same current release. Then completely exit and relaunch the game. Have the host create the world again and have the other player select Join Game rather than trying to reuse an old invitation or stale lobby entry.

Core Keeper multiplayer behavior has changed through patches that addressed lobby finding, join errors, and cross-play networking. A client that was left on an older build can therefore fail even when the network and account settings are correct. Version alignment is the fastest, least invasive check.
Update and restart checklist
- On each PC or console, install all pending Core Keeper updates.
- If a dedicated server is installed separately, update that tool as well; a server process on an older build can reject current clients.
- Close Core Keeper completely on every device. Do not leave it suspended in a console quick-resume state.
- Restart Steam on PC when Steam is part of the connection path, then launch the game again.
- Let the host load the world and create a fresh multiplayer session.
- Have the client open Join Game and try the new session.
If the error changes after updating, use the new wording as your diagnosis. For example, a previous “Game cannot be found” that becomes “Game version mismatch” points to build or mod alignment rather than lobby discovery.

2. Check platform and storefront compatibility
Core Keeper supports multiplayer among PC storefronts including Steam, Epic, and GOG. Cross-platform play between PC and console is not supported. Cross-generation play within the supported console ecosystem is described as available, so players on different generations of the same console family may be able to join, subject to the platform account and game requirements.

A PC player cannot solve a PC-to-console incompatibility by enabling a setting or opening a port. Confirm the platform combination before spending time on firewall or router changes.
3. Recreate a normal Steam host-and-play session
For an ordinary player-hosted game on Steam, Core Keeper uses Steam’s networking backend. The official multiplayer announcement states that this path does not require port forwarding. If a friend cannot join a normal Steam-hosted session, recreate the session and check the Steam client rather than opening router ports merely as a guess.
Clean host-and-play procedure
- Both players exit Core Keeper.
- Exit and relaunch Steam on the host and the client.
- Start Core Keeper on the host and load the intended world.
- Create the multiplayer session from the in-game flow.
- On the client, use Join Game and select the host’s current session.
- If the lobby was created before the restart, discard it and create a new one.
- Test once with an unmodded world if either player uses mods; this distinguishes Steam discovery from mod initialization.
Because Steam networking handles this host-and-play path, forwarding a dedicated-server port will not repair a normal lobby-discovery problem. Port rules become relevant when you deliberately run a dedicated server and accept direct connections.

If the lobby still cannot be found
- Verify that both players are signed in to the expected storefront account and that each installation is online.
- Confirm that the host is actually in a multiplayer session rather than a local single-player load.
- Close overlays or connection tools that may prevent Steam from updating its presence, then restart Steam.
- Check whether a platform service outage is affecting the storefront or console network.
- Try a new test world. If a new world works, the problem may be tied to the original save, its mods, or its server configuration.
4. Remove game-version and mod mismatches
“Game version mismatch” usually means the game build differs, the mod set differs, or both. Modded clients and servers must agree on the complete set of installed mods and their versions. Having the same mod names is not sufficient if one player has an older release, a different dependency, or a mod that failed to load.
Use an unmodded test to isolate the cause
- Record the current mod list on every client and on the server, including dependencies and versions.
- Disable or remove mods on the host and joining player for a temporary test. If a dedicated server is involved, stop it before changing its mod files.
- Launch the same current base-game version on both sides.
- Create a new multiplayer session and attempt to join.
- If the unmodded session works, restore mods gradually, keeping the list and versions identical.
- If the unmodded session fails, the cause is more likely platform, build, lobby, firewall, or server configuration rather than a mod conflict.
Mod troubleshooting details
Check each side’s logs to confirm that the mods loaded successfully. Remove a broken, outdated, or partially installed mod and test again. A dedicated server must use the same compatible mod set as its clients; a server with one extra mod or a different version can reject everyone even when the base game is current.
When reporting a mod-related problem, state whether the failure occurs in single-player, a player-hosted multiplayer session, or a dedicated server. Include the logs requested by the mod documentation and the exact mismatch message.

5. Decide whether you need a dedicated server
Host-and-play is the simplest option, but the world is tied to the host session. A dedicated server is intended for a world that should remain available without the normal host being online. It requires more setup and ongoing maintenance, and direct connections have port requirements that do not apply to Steam host-and-play.

Install the server tool
On Steam, the dedicated-server tool is available from the Tools section of the Steam library. Install it on the machine that will stay online, then read the documentation included with that exact server package. Server arguments can change with updates, so treat the installed package’s documentation as authoritative for syntax.

Configure a direct-connection server safely
- Choose the machine and local address that will run the server.
- Select a port and set it with
-portaccording to the server package documentation. - Allow the server application through the machine’s firewall for the required incoming traffic.
- Configure the router to send the chosen port to the server machine only if players will connect from outside the local network. Use the exact protocol and port guidance supplied with the installed server version.
- Set
-iponly when you need to bind a particular local interface; otherwise the documented default is usually appropriate. - Set
-password, and choose-maxplayersif eight is not the desired cap. - Use
-allowonlyplatformonly when you intentionally want to limit which direct-connection storefronts can join. - Start the server and verify that it remains running without errors.
- Give players the correct address, port, password, and platform instructions. They must use the direct-connection method expected by the server, not an old host-and-play lobby.
Do not assume that a port opened for a dedicated server is needed for Steam host-and-play. They are separate connection paths. Also verify every argument against the package you installed because third-party guides can lag behind a game update.

Dedicated-server failure branches
- Server starts but nobody can connect: confirm the process is listening on the configured port, the firewall allows incoming traffic, and the router points that port to the correct machine.
- Local players connect but remote players time out: investigate the external address, router forwarding, firewall scope, and whether the internet connection uses a network arrangement that blocks inbound connections.
- Players receive a version mismatch: update the server tool and align the complete mod list and versions.
- Only one storefront can join: inspect
-allowonlyplatformand remove or correct the restriction if cross-store PC access is intended. - The server disappears after a restart: check that its launch parameters, password, world path, and automatic-start method are still present.
6. Check local firewall and network conditions without overcorrecting
Firewall checks matter mainly for dedicated servers and for a client whose security software is blocking the game or storefront. Add an allow rule for the Core Keeper executable and the dedicated-server process when prompted, using the operating system’s firewall controls. Avoid disabling the firewall globally; a narrowly scoped allow rule is easier to audit and remove.
On a shared or managed network, outbound traffic may be filtered or inbound connections may be impossible. Test the same account on a different trusted network only as a diagnostic. If the game works there, compare firewall, router, or network policies rather than changing game files.
For Steam host-and-play, do not infer that a timeout proves port forwarding is required. Recheck the platform combination, update state, Steam restart, and mod status first. For a direct dedicated-server connection, confirm the configured port and incoming access as described in the server documentation.
7. Escalate with a reproducible support report
If the sequence above does not resolve the problem, contact Fireshine Games support through the official customer-support route referenced by Steam’s Core Keeper support guidance. A concise, reproducible report is more useful than a statement that multiplayer is broken.
Include these details
- The exact error text and when it appears.
- Game version on every client and the dedicated server, if used.
- Who is hosting and whether the session is host-and-play or dedicated-server based.
- Platform and storefront for every player.
- Whether cross-play is being attempted and whether the combination is PC-only or includes a console.
- Whether mods are enabled, the complete mod list and versions, and relevant logs.
- Whether the failure occurs in a new unmodded world.
- The steps already attempted: updates, restarts, platform check, Steam host test, mod removal, firewall check, or server-port verification.
For mod issues, specify whether the test was single-player, multiplayer, or a dedicated server and attach the logs requested by the mod troubleshooting guidance. For a dedicated server, include the launch arguments with passwords removed.

A practical decision path
- Different platforms? If the session is PC-to-console, stop: that cross-platform combination is not supported. If it is PC storefronts or supported cross-generation consoles, continue.
- Different versions? Update every installation and restart before testing again.
- Using mods? Test an unmodded session, then make the mod lists and versions identical.
- Steam host-and-play? Recreate the lobby and use Steam networking; do not add port forwarding as a first response.
- Need the world online without the host? Install the dedicated-server tool and configure its port, address, password, player cap, platform restriction, firewall, and router path.
