A copper-foam-supported catalyst reported in 2018 was designed to drive the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in neutral media. It is not bare copper foam: the researchers grew copper oxide nanowires on the foam and added nickel and chromium oxide. Their proposed design assigns different surface tasks to these components, addressing challenges that arise when producing hydrogen without the high proton concentration found in acidic electrolyte.

What the neutral-media foam catalyst is

The catalyst architecture combines a porous copper-foam support, copper oxide (CuO) nanowires, nickel, and chromium oxide. The foam provides a high-surface-area structure; the additional materials make up the engineered catalytic surface. A piece of copper foam by itself is not the reported catalyst. The primary study was reported by C.-T. Dinh and colleagues in Nature Energy in 2018, and its design was summarized by Chemistry World on 13 December 2018.

The work targets neutral conditions partly because the researchers were interested in compatibility with microbial systems that convert carbon dioxide into chemical fuels. That is an application motivation, not evidence that an integrated commercial reactor was built or demonstrated.

How the catalyst is proposed to produce hydrogen

Hydrogen evolution is the cathodic reaction that produces hydrogen during water electrolysis. In acidic electrolyte, protons are abundant. In neutral media, the catalyst must also contend with water activation and the hydroxyl groups left as hydrogen forms. The team proposed using different sites on its composite surface to help manage those steps.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Chromium oxide helps with water activation. The researchers assign it a role in destabilizing water and handling hydroxyl groups.
  2. Nickel binds hydrogen. In the team’s explanation, nickel helps hold hydrogen produced at the surface.
  3. The copper-containing support helps assemble hydrogen. The proposed role of the copper support is to help bring protons together to form hydrogen.

This is the researchers’ proposed division of labor for this particular material, not a universal mechanism for foam-supported catalysts. Chemistry World quotes team member Pelayo Garcia de Arquer explaining that two parts are designed to help break water in a neutral environment, while the copper support plays a role after a proton and hydroxyl group remain.

Why use copper foam?

A porous foam offers a large surface area and a nanostructured base on which to build the active material. In Chemistry World’s report, University of Basel inorganic chemist Edwin Constable described the foam as a clever choice for its high surface area and nanoporous structure. The support is therefore part of the architecture, but its presence does not make ordinary copper foam a ready-made hydrogen catalyst.

What the platinum comparison does—and does not—show

Chemistry World’s 2018 report says platinum activity in the cited comparison was two to three orders of magnitude lower at neutral pH than in acid. That figure describes the reported comparison, not a universal performance measure for platinum or proof that the copper-foam catalyst is more efficient overall. A meaningful comparison between catalysts would need matched electrolyte conditions and measures such as overpotential at a specified current density, Tafel slope, and durability under stated operating conditions.

Is it ready for seawater or large-scale hydrogen production?

No such readiness is established by the cited reporting. Seawater reduction is mentioned as a possible application, but Constable raised chloride stability as a concern. That warning does not establish that the catalyst fails under every chloride-containing condition; it does mean the report does not justify calling it seawater-ready. The same expert also cautioned that scaling up production of the material, particularly the copper foam, could be difficult.

How this differs from other foam-supported HER catalysts

“Foam catalyst” describes a support format, not one shared chemistry. Other studies have examined platinum-modified nickel foam in alkaline electrolyte and nickel phosphide (Ni2P) on nickel foam across acidic, phosphate-buffer, and alkaline conditions. Those compositions and electrolytes differ from the copper-foam/CuO/nickel/chromium-oxide catalyst designed for neutral media; results from one should not be treated as a direct performance ranking of the other.
