The October 2026 Copilot Notebooks update is designed to let users do more inside a project workspace: gather and manage references, delegate simple work, schedule recurring tasks, edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, and create interactive reports or PDFs. The features are rolling out in stages, with several announced for Frontier or for later availability rather than confirmed as live for everyone.
What’s new in Copilot Notebooks
Microsoft describes Copilot Notebooks as an AI-powered workspace for a project or topic. The October update expands that workspace from collecting and using references to producing and editing more kinds of work. Microsoft’s October 9, 2026 update listing summarizes the changes as delegating simple work, editing Office files, and creating interactive reports (Microsoft Copilot Blog).
Create a notebook from a project goal
Users can describe a project and ask Copilot to create a notebook populated with relevant references from work data and the web. The update also expands supported reference types to Markdown, TXT, and RTF files. Microsoft lists those expanded reference types as generally available in its October feature announcement.

Delegate simple work and choose a response scope
Copilot can help manage references, keep a notebook current, synthesize project context, and create or edit a single Office file from chat. For responses, users can limit the scope to the notebook or broaden it to “Work and web.” This is assistance for specific work in the notebook—not a claim that Copilot can independently perform unrestricted actions.

Schedule recurring tasks

In this announcement, “AI automations” means scheduled recurring Copilot tasks; it does not establish that tasks can act without limits or oversight.
Select a model for notebook chat
The update lets users request deeper reasoning or select a specific GPT model for notebook chat. Microsoft says more models are coming, but does not identify them in the announcement.

Audio overviews are set to use more notebook references, including Outlook email, Teams meetings and chats, OneNote and Loop pages, and TXT files. The update also describes a “Critique and Debate” format, topic-based episodes, and saving audio files to OneDrive with inherited sensitivity labels. Microsoft describes these audio changes as coming in the following weeks, not as universally available in October.
Availability: the October announcement is a staged rollout
Microsoft’s October announcement assigns different availability statuses to different features. Frontier access is not the same as general availability, and “coming in the next few weeks” is a forward-looking rollout statement rather than confirmation that a feature is already enabled for every tenant. The Microsoft 365 Message Center also says the Notebooks updates will roll out to Frontier later in October 2026 (Microsoft 365 Message Center archive).

What happens to existing OneNote notebooks
Microsoft’s Message Center notice says notebooks are available through both the Microsoft 365 Copilot app and OneNote, stay in sync, and retain existing notebook data. It also says the existing OneNote Notebooks experience remains unchanged (Microsoft 365 Message Center archive).
Licensing note for Office capabilities
A separate Microsoft Message Center notice says Copilot app Office capabilities accessed through Chat are included with the Microsoft 365 Copilot user subscription license, while Office capabilities accessed through Cowork use usage-based billing. That notice concerns the described app capabilities; it is not a complete price or entitlement guide for every Copilot Notebooks feature. Confirm applicable licensing with your organization and Microsoft’s current guidance.
